Once again it’s that time of year when so many snowbirds
leave us to return to their summer homes in all parts of the U.S.
and Canada. The usual excuse is “We have to go back to do our
taxes,” or “We have a business to take care of” -- you know
the routine. But what they’re really going home for is the kids,
grandkids and great-grandchildren they’ve been missing all winter
long. And who can blame them? I, too, have two special greatgrandchildren I have to admit I’m totally in love with that live
in Washington state and oh, how I missed them during the 2013
holidays. Amazing how that happens!!!
Which brings me to announcing that husband Bruce and I are
heading back to Logan, UT to spend 3 months in the beautiful
Cache Valley, about 87 miles northeast of Salt Lake City. We
first experienced this lovely place last year and decided after
only 2 weeks, we were going there again. You might remember
I wrote about Logan in a few of the 2013 summer Sun Times
issues and, lo and behold, there are several other couples from
F.O.S. going for the first time. It will be so much fun to have our
friends experience the “Summer Citizens” program courtesy of
Utah State University and the Cache Valley Chamber of Commerce who do such a fabulous job. Last year over 800 folks
from various places in Arizona were part of this great schedule
of activities along with some much cooler weather.
I will continue to produce the Sun Times with the help of our
writers, photographers, and especially our publisher, Carl Miller
of Miller Media, who always comes through with a great looking
paper each and every month.
In closing, I’d like to thank everyone who contributes to
our publication throughout the season. I couldn’t do it without
your help and for that I’m very grateful. It’s hard to believe I’ve
been your editor for nine years…where did the time go? Is it
just my imagination or does aging and time flying by seem to
go together…naw, that’s just a vicious rumor!
Have a wonderful summer everyone!!!

Letter Carrier Food
Drive May 10th
By Ruth Wilson
The 22nd Annual National Association of Letter Carrier Food
Drive is set for Saturday, May 10th. This is the largest one-day
food drive in our nation.
Please leave non-perishable food donations by your mail box.
Your letter carrier will do the rest. The food is taken back to a postal
station, sorted, and then delivered to an area food bank or pantry.
Let’s all do our part to make this the best one ever! Thank you
everyone for your help!!!
Lots of the Karaoke gang lined the cul de sac for an
“Under the Stars” evening of fun!
Kevin Gierach & Verna Peterson sang their hearts out.
Text & photos by Sheila Wianecki
Approximately 75 people attended the 2nd Karaoke Under the
Stars held in the Deer Circle Cul-de-sac on April 13. Despite a lot
of wind, people enjoyed the singing and dancing under the stars.
It was a warm, beautiful evening and a perfect night to be outside
socializing with friends and neighbors. We are looking forward
to bringing you more evenings like this in the fall.
Hope to see you all at the Activity Center for our regular
Karaoke Happy Hours too. Remember, we are “Just For Fun”,
everyone is welcome -- it’s always FREE and always fun!

Message
By John Millar
The “winter” activity schedule is winding
down and the summer
maintenance and project
schedule is ramping up.
The following areas are scheduled for improvements this summer:
• The ADA Restrooms for the Administration
Building, approved by the community on the
2013 Annual meeting ballot, did not occur
last summer due to delays in getting permits
and cost estimates coming in higher than
expected. The permit has been pulled for
this project and we are now in the process of
creating plan addendums reducing the scope
of the project so that it will work within the
$60,000 cost approved by the community.
• We are currently working to get estimates
to replace the walls and planters from 80th
Street to Park View Circle. These masonry
walls no longer match, in height or appearance, the new walls put up by the City during
the Broadway Road Renovations and the
planters are essentially a gateway into the
community for trespassers. The replacement
of these existing walls is a reserve fund expense that will enhance Security now and be
By Deanna Anderson
designed to dovetail into proposed plans to
renovate the entrance in the future.
• We will also look into possible grant money
available from the City of Mesa if we reduce
the turf area and save water used to irrigate
the turf. Estimates to add height to the wall
along Hawes Road are also being sought.
• We are getting estimates to replace the block
wall next to the Administration Building to
improve appearances in this area.
• A new snooker table was installed in the
Billiard Room on April 9th along with new
high stools that replaced the old benches in
the room. The existing billiard tables will
have new felt installed this summer.
• Additional upgrades are also budgeted for
the Activity Center Stage Lighting, the
Patio area on the north side of the Activity
Center, and improvements to some security
equipment.
Reserve Funds of the Fountain of the Sun
Community Association, which includes the
Impact Fees, are dedicated to major repairs
and replacements to the association property. A
recent letter to the editor requested a history of
the Impact Fee income, expenses and current
balance. We will get this information together
for the next Sun Times issue.
Ode to “B”
Rootie had a special man,
His hair was white as snow.
And everywhere that Rootie went,
He was sure to go.
He followed her to golf one day,
Which was very cool....
They hit it off and said, “I do,”
Which caused all men to drool.
He pulled the weeds and raked the rocks,
And planted trees to thrive…
And offered any help he could to any man
alive.
He cries real tears and laughs from his gut,
But, lovingly every time…
A gentleman with a capital “G”
Is this best buddy of mine.
He calls me “Sis” and I call him “B”,
Both pet names used respectfully.
And so, my friend, Bruce
This is for you.
For all you are and all you do.

FOSHA Manager’s Message
By Belinda Hansen
In May we celebrate
two special holidays,
Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. A Very Happy
Mother’s Day on May
11th to all you mothers!
On Monday, May 26,
2014, the FOSHA office will be closed for the
Memorial weekend. I hope you all have a fun
and safe weekend and find some way to stay cool.
The 2nd quarter payments were due by April
30, 2014 and a late fee has been charged to those
whose payment was not received on time. Fortunately several have decided to pay their total
balance to avoid receiving statements for the next
two quarters. The 3rd quarter statement will be
mailed out the end of June and payment will be
due no later than July 31, 2014. It is important you
notified this office of any mailing address changes
so the statement gets to you in a timely fashion.
As many of you have noticed, weeds are a big
problem this year. Not only are many residences
plagued with them but a lot of the common areas
are too. FOSHA has been working with the landscaper to try to remove and spray the weeds on
the cul de sacs as they pop up. We will continue
to work aggressively to eliminate the weeds in
our areas and we expect all property owners to
do the same on their properties. I realize many
homeowners have already left the community
so I hope they or their caretakers don’t overlook
these vacant properties and keep them looking
good all summer long to avoid weed letters being
sent to the property owners. Remember, you as the
property owner, are bound by the CC&R’s to keep
your property maintained at all times.
In May or June FOSHA will be seal coating the
streets and cul de sacs that were replaced last year
& crack filled this year. This is the second part of
the maintenance program in keeping our streets
in good condition. Notices will be hand delivered
to those residents living on these streets that are
still here at that time. Please be sure to follow all
instructions on the handout and stay off the street
until the asphalt company has given us the okay
to travel back on them. A map of these marked
streets and dates they will be scheduled is located
on the FOSHA bulletin board. A date has not yet
been designated for this project but we expect it
to occur in May or possibly June.
FOSHA will soon be scheduling trimming the
larger palm trees on the cul de sac islands. This
project will be completed in June/July after the
palm trees have finished blooming. Homeowners will also need to trim palm trees in the near
future and June and July is the ideal time to have
them trimmed. If they are not trimmed prior to
the monsoon season, severe damage may occur
to neighboring properties from the dead and loose
branches and bark. PLEASE be a good neighbor
and see that your trees, bushes and plants all get
trimmed before they become a nuisance.
As a reminder, no contractor signs are allowed
on your property before, during or after your project is being constructed. Please obtain architectural
approval from this office prior to the start of any
project and then notify us when it is completed so
the committee can see that the project was completed as plans were submitted. There are a number
of projects sitting in the file that may have been
completed but has not been called in by the owner.
FOSHA Board meetings will not be held
during the months of June, July and August but
will resume Monday, September 8, 2014. If you
have any questions or comments, you can contact
the office at 480-984-1434 Monday thru Friday
between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Wishing you all
a pleasant summer!

F.O.S. Security Review
By Bob Flinn
The Mesa Police Department has advised that there seems to
be a rash of thefts of golf carts. They recommend that you not
leave your keys in the golf cart when away from it. Also keep
a record of the serial number (and VIN if available) in order to
identify it if stolen. Always park the cart in a well-lighted area
and if possible secure it to a stationary object if leaving it for a
prolonged period of time. There are several security devices that
can be purchased which help to deter thefts. These are available
at most golf cart businesses, and include locks for the accelerator
pedal, remote security locks (which remotely disable the key
switch circuit), and steering wheel locks.
Please slow down and observe the posted speed limits. A
recap of the speed recording machines has indicated that for a 7
day period at 80th & Sun Villa Apts. there were 566 cars clocked
at 25 to 29 MPH, 30 at 30 to 34 MPH, 3 at 35 to 39 MPH, and
1 at 45 to 50 MPH. A recap for a 5 day period at 80th & Park
View Circle showed 681 at 25 to 30 MPH and 38 at 31 to 35
MPH. A recap for a 3 day period at 7732 E. Pueblo showed 1115
cars clocked at 25 to 30 MPH, 84 at 31 to 35 MPH, 5 at 36 to
40MPH and 1 at 41 to 45 MPH.
FOS Security calls for March 2014:
EMT-35, Ambulance-33, Parking-469, Police-32, Garages
Open-46, Res. Assists-129, RV Permits-12, Incident Reports-31.
FOS Security calls for the last 6 months:
EMT-226, Ambulance-216, Parking-1608, Police-143,
Garages Open-201, Res. Assists-645, RV Permits-80, Incident
Reports-320.
No reports were available from the City of Mesa for
these periods.
Many of you have enjoyed the Pancake Breakfasts held from
November through April on the first Saturday of each month.
Don’t despair. Beginning on May 3, 2014, and on through
October you will still be able to enjoy this great breakfast event
and socialize with your friends. Hours will continue to be 7:30
- 10:00 a.m. with a cost of $5 per person. Tickets will continue
to be sold at the FOSCA office and will also be available at the
door. Hopefully you’ve seen the flyers around advertising the
summer Pancake Breakfasts or already read about them in the
weekly Sun Times blast.
The FOS Citizens Service Club has partnered with the F.O.S.
Community Association to benefit our summer residents and
snowbirds who return early in the fall. Several volunteers from
FOSCA sponsored breakfasts during the winter months have
volunteered to help the Citizens Service Club make for a summer of successful breakfasts. Get it on your calendar now for the
first Saturday of each month for a wonderful breakfast time. The
menu continues the same featuring pancakes, scrambled eggs,
link sausage, coffee and juice. See you there!

Please save manufacturer’s coupons from your newspapers
and other publications. Cut them out, bring them to the FOSCA
Office and put in the basket provided in the hallway between the
FOSCA & FOSHA Offices.
V.F.W. Post #7968 collects and sends them overseas to help
our military stationed in many parts of the world. If you’re short
on time, simply bring the entire page(s) and we’ll clip them.
Remember, they must be manufacturer’s coupons and must have
current/future expiration dates, not coupons that have already
expired. Thank you!!!
Library News
By Cathy Viano
Well it looks as if we may have another hot summer so those
that stay here, come up to the library, sit and enjoy a good book
or work the puzzle in the cool air conditioned room. Those that
leave for the summer have fun and try to stay cool.
As of this writing, I don’t believe the library will be closed
anytime during the summer but if it is, I will put up signs there
and on the door.
I want to thank everyone for their cooperation in not leaving
the books on the floor when the library is closed for Bingo and
special events.
We have a few boxes of books in storage so we will be dusting
them off and putting them on the shelves for your reading pleasure. Enjoy a book where every page takes you on an adventure.

Letters to the Editor
Letter #1
Subject: Carl Pearce Letter to the Editor - April 2014
I would like to thank Carl Pearce, for his astute opinions
regarding ongoing issues that should concern every resident of
our Fountain of the Sun (FOS) Community.
To quote Carl’s letter: “If FOS is to continue to be a viable,
vibrant community attractive to new retirees, much more is
needed.” And: “Have you visited and looked at the central
amenities in some other parks? Compared to many, ours does
not measure up. This is our competition and directly related
to our market values.”
Carl is spot-on in every aspect of his letter regarding the
potential viability of FOS!
Sincerely,
Steve Tisza

Long Range Planning
Update
By Keith Kellen, Chairman
Long Range Planning Committee
The ad hoc committee that was to work between the FOSCC
and the FOSCA Boards was unsuccessful in finding any common ground between the two boards. Negotiations will continue.
Volunteer Tina Cary will keep on looking for grant money
that might help our community move forward with minimal
expense to FOS.
As of this writing, the Long Range Planning Committee has
not finalized our Five-year Capital Development Plan for the
FOSCA Board. More on this will be in next month’s article.
This Committee will not be meeting any more this spring and
summer. Our next meeting will be in the fall.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact John Millar, FOSCA Manager at 480-380-4000, or myself, Keith Kellen,
Chairman on my cell at 612-382-8799, my home at 480-380-2041
or by email at [email protected].
Remember, “Working together, we can make it happen!”
Letter #2
Fountain of the Sun - the best bang for the buck!
We enjoy living in one of the mobile home communities here
in F.O.S. Some 7 years ago we began our search for the perfect
55+ community. Our search came with a long ‘shopping list’. At
the “Very Top” of our list was:
A friendly community with multi-type properties.
• Ability to walk our dogs on the property.
• Affordable HOA fees (which we discovered can run into the
thousands of dollars).
• Well maintained amenities (especially the pool environment).
• Loads of activities, no super strict rules (at least as we understand them).
• Easy access to hospitals, shopping and the freeway system.
In short, we found the best bang for our buck, and knew exactly
what we were getting before we moved here. We also liked the
24/7 security and ability to store an RV on the property.
I doubt that a large part of this community cares about the
pricey amenities described in Mr. Pearce’s list of ‘issues’. This
community may not be ‘perfect’‘, but there are other communities that Mr. Pearce should probably look at and relocate to. Just
across the street is a community with a tennis court, for example.
It is a shame to waste any ‘Golden Years’ being unhappy about
something that can easily be changed by moving.
Happy in the Fountain of the Sun 7 years later, your neighbors,

Letter #3
In the April edition of the Sun Times, Carl Pearce wrote a
detailed letter of thoughts and concerns regarding the future of
our Fountain of the Sun community.
We’re writing to thank Carl for voicing what many of us have
talked about for so long. We’ve watched as other communities
have updated and upgraded their facilities while Fountain of the
Sun has remained somewhat stagnant. We applaud the forward
thinking of those who want to make changes to insure that FOS
remains a vibrant community.
Thank you, Carl, for reminding us to keep looking toward the
future and not staying satisfied with the status quo.

F.O.S.C.A. BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
April 14, 2014
Call to Order: Called to order the regular meeting of the FOSCA
Board Meeting at the FOSCA Office.

Buchan, Jerry Favero, Harry Gibbens, Keith Kellen, Larry Shima and
FOSCA manager, John Millar. Dennis Jones was absent.

Security Committee, motion second by Director Favero. The motion
was approved, the agenda was approved as amended.

Jerry Evavold introduced the new Board Members - Jerry Favero
& Harry Gibbens. Mr. Favero will be liaison to the Security Committee and Mr. Gibbens will be working on organizing FOSCA Rules &
Regulations into a booklet.
Old steel shed was removed at no cost to FOSCA, by landscaper
Tony Sesmas. This is a saving of approximately $1,000.00. Bill and
Joan Reetz removed the old concrete pad with his forklift, again at no
cost to FOSCA, a saving of approximately $1,500.00. No construction
cost so far, and we still have $24,000 to build one Pickle Board court
which can be converted to spaces for golf carts at a future date. Some
stucco repair to the building will be necessary. FOSCA storage has been
moved to the RV Storage.
Worked with FOSHA Board to contact tenant who has been the

to senior overlay violation.

to FOS residents; it is kept behind the front desk counter. But once it
leaves our office, we have no control over what the resident does with
it. Note: The use of the FOS phone directory is intended for the private
use of FOS Residents only.
Aresident asked about the new FOS Vehicle stickers, why are people
with old stickers allowed into the community? Security staff tells residents they must get a new sticker when they can but it is the residents’
responsibility to comply, we cannot deny access to someone we know
is a resident of the community. Director Shima said the Security SubCommittee is working on “Rules and Regulations” and Post Orders.
Director Kellen, said committee is expanding on the parking rules.
Donna Rosner requested that any new rules be distributed to all

Meet Your Neighbors
Janis & Ray Olson
Article by Charlotte Holmes
It is such a pleasure to have Ray & Janis
Olson as our neighbors in FOS. They both have life
experiences that make them so special. They have
successfully survived many hardships, hard work,
hard times, war, depression, and they were still able
to build a fine, satisfying life for themselves and their
families plus find much happiness along the way.
Many FOS residents can easily identify what life
was like during the Great Depression and WWII.
Following those years for Ray and Janis came career
building, family life and all the good things along the
way, including many many memories.
Ray Mitchell Olson was born April 11, 1924 in
Belfield, ND in the Badlands. His parents, Charles
& Lena (LeDoux) Olson raised 10 children: 7 boys
and 3 girls. His grandparents, Ceprion & Josephine,
lived 5 miles away.Although his school was only one
mile from home, it was very difficult to keep a teacher
in such a harsh wilderness. Ray’s family owned a
large prosperous cattle ranch but during the 30’s
Great Depression, drought made life tremendously
difficult. Plus their bank went bankrupt and seized the
cattle, leaving them completely destitute. The family
traded the Belfield ranch for a farm in Beltrami, MN.
Ray managed to get through 7th grade while always
helping with work on the farm. Everyone had to pitch
in with plowing, planting, milking and all the chores.
Ray said life was very hard during those years.
At 16, Ray left home and got a job in Rockford, IL
working in a bolt factory and running a bolt making
machine for 50 cents an hour. He was able to buy a
motorcycle and a car. He loved his job and felt like he
was on top of the world! Then, on his 18th birthday,
he was drafted into the US Army in 1942. During
WWII he served 3 years with the 87th Division under
General George Patton. His first action was in France,
then they moved into Belgium. They lived in heavy
snow and extreme cold. He remembers that the men
were not allowed to build fires, so to keep from freezing, they dug a trench down below the frost line. When
they had to stand guard for 2 hours each, they went
up top into a fox hole outside their camp where they
could hear anyone coming a long way off.
A bit of history: On Dec. 16, 1944 until Jan. 25,
l945, the Battle of the Bulge, the last Nazi major offensive, was launched by Hitler’s army in the Ardennes
Forest. It was Germany’s final western front stand. The
87th Division of which Ray was a member, fought
the biggest, bloodiest, battle Americans ever fought.
80,000 American soldiers were killed or injured
there; 100,000 Germans were killed or injured. This
infamous battle went down in history as the German’s
last attempt to win the war, however, it was their most
crushing defeat! After that battle, tired and cold, with
so many of their men gone, the 87th Division went
across Germany to the Czechoslovakian border and
entered the Buchenwald concentration death camp.
They witnessed the horrific conditions of hungry, sick
and dying prisoners. Ray said it was so gruesome the
Americans found it hard to believe people could treat
others so brutally and inhumane. That never forgotten
experience left many ugly, indelible memories in the
minds of the American soldiers who witnessed those
helpless victims of the Nazi’s. When the war ended in
Europe, the 87th Division was sent back to Holland
waiting to be shipped to Japan. The H bomb brought
the defeat of Japan so the troops came home and Ray
was discharged.
After discharge, Ray went back to Rockford and
got his old job back at the machine shop. He and his
first wife, Donna were married for 48 years and they
raised 3 boys and one daughter. One son lives in Texas,
one in California, and one in Minnesota. His daughter
lives here in Scottsdale. Now Ray and wife Janis have
several grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren! Ray
is what we call a self made, self educated man. In
spite of being born into hardship and lack of education, his achievements are many. Over the years he
purchased motels, land, became a pilot and owned
his own planes. What he has accomplished is nothing
less than amazing!
Janis was born in Seattle, WA. She, her older sister
and younger brother were raised by their father, Merle
Johnson, who had to raise these 3 children by himself.
The children spent most summers with grandparents,
an aunt, uncle and cousins. Though economics at that
time may have been in short supply, love was always
more than abundant. Family ties were strong and a
May 2014 • Sun Times – Page 7
happy family life ensued. Janis’s great grandparents,
Hemphill & Augustina Traxel, migrated to the U.S.
by way of Crimea, Russia and Germany through
Ellis Island then on to South Dakota to homestead in
1905. Janis’s grandparents, William & Jean (Traxel)
Johnson, along with father Merle & uncle Darwin,
later moved to Washington state in 1937.
Janis went through elementary, middle school,
and graduated from West Seattle High School with
Honors and won a college scholarship. She was very
active in high school. She was on the Varsity Track
Team and Cross Country team for 3 years and also
played Varsity basketball for 2 years. After graduating she worked for Safeway for 21 years. She was
an Arizona snowbird, spending part of the year in
Seattle, and part in Mesa. Janis and her late husband,
Bruce, invested in real estate, which turned out to
be very lucrative. They had planned to retire here in
FOS but Jan had to carry out that dream by herself.
She still manages rentals in FOS and takes care and
pride in her properties.
Janis and Ray married in 1998 and share a lovely
home here and have always enjoyed a lot of activities
together. For years they swam every night gathering
together with many regulars and friends at the pool.
They played golf, traveled, exercised, enjoyed hiking
and had many big family gatherings. Photography is
a passion of Jan’s as you will notice in our Sun Times
paper and she loves to cook…interests she cherishes.
Ray, too, loves to cook and if lucky enough, you
might get a container of his homemade soup or
beef stew.
Unfortunately Ray’s heart problems has somewhat limited his participation, however, they are
charter members of FOSCC so they are involved in
many Club activities. Jan served as Secretary for the
9 Hole Ladies Golf group for 7 years, and for the 9th
Hole Mixed Couples for 6 years.
Ray and Jan spend 9 months in FOS and 3
months in Seattle over the summer. They are both
deeply religious and feel the need to thank God for all
the love, happiness and blessings they have received
over the years. Their life together has brought contentment and great pleasure for them both.
Ray just celebrated his 90th Birthday April 11th
with a party given by Janis at the Activity Center that
included his and her families and their many friends
and neighbors. We are so glad to include them as part
of our community and our GOOD NEIGHBORS!!!
Have a wonderful summer everyone and see
you next fall!
(Editor’s Note: See photos of Ray’s 90th
birthday event on Pg. 10 in “FOSCC 9 Hole
Mixed Couples News.”)

F.O.S. Linksters Golf
By Robert W. Bunke
Linksters Board of Directors (l. to r.): President Marty
Turnbull, Secretary Jim Jeans, Vice President Garth
Neisess, Treasurer Dale Johnsen.
The Linksters monthly meeting on Tues., March 25, attended by
more than 70 members, was scheduled to be the final meeting of the
2013-2014 golf season. By the time all of the problems were submit-

in One on #6
ted, a special meeting was scheduled for Monday March 31, to try
to have some answers before most of the Linksters leave for their
summer homes.
After 20 years of golfing at the Links of Queen Creek on Wednesday mornings, we were informed that they would no longer enter into
any nine hole league contracts. This put the Board of Directors on
the hunt for another golf course that would have room and accept a
league the size of the Linksters which totaled 118 members at the end
of the season. Along with the problem at the Links, we were notified
that the agreement with F.O.S.C.C. was to be cancelled at the end of
this season. The old saying “when it rains it pours” held true this time.
While change is always inevitable it doesn’t happen without some pain.
F.O.S.C.C. President, Bill Rutledge reviewed the changes that
F.O.S.C.C. wanted to put into effect going forward. By a straw vote
(because no contract was available to vote on) the group voted unanimously to reject the offer as presented. With regard to where we might
golf on Wednesday mornings was being researched by the new Board
of Directors with the hope that we might have some answers by the
time of the next meeting.
The happier time of the meeting was the awarding of prizes for
the March 12th Memorial Tournament at the Links. President Jim
Jeans team walked away with first place, shooting a good 5 under
score. With the tees far back and some wicked pin placements that was
a great score. Jim’s team consisted of himself, Tom Bertsch, Merlin
Dornbush and Max Mast.
Also, well deserved accolades were given to Wayne Mantueffell
and his helpers, for an excellent job of preparing all the details for
a fun filled Annual Banquet on March 19. The prizes collected by
member Don Woxland were great and the music was excellent. 122
meals were served .
As the season winds down once again we can only say “it was a
wonderful winter in Arizona.“ I am sorry to say that that was not true
in many places in the U.S. and Canada. As I often tell our family “you
had a real old timer of a winter”. After this year I think they know
what I meant.
This will be the last article until fall, so I wish all of you a Happy
and Blessed summer. Play some golf and don’t let the worries of the
world tear you apart. Vaya Con Dios.
At the special meeting on March 31, the Linksters agreed to a
contract with F.O.S.C.C. for next season. Negotiations for a course
to replace the Links at Queen Creek are still underway.

“Happy Mother’s Day!”
We had our fourth meeting of the year on April
2nd. We had league play at 8:00 followed by a delicious “taco bar”.
Rosalie Fournier made the presentation of trophies, towels and pins for the hole-in-ones in the
month of March. Kris Kugel had one on 3/21 on Hole
#6 and Donna Gray had one on 3/31 on Hole #18.
Rosalie also announced that as of Jan. 1, 2015, the
league will give each hole-in-one recipient the choice
of one of the 3 items, rather than everyone receiving
all 3. This will allow the monies in the fund to build
up for distribution to all winners at the end of the year.
The Club Champion/Presidents Cup was played
on 3/12 and 3/19 this year.
Following play on 3/19, all ladies were treated to
a great buffet lunch on the patio and the winners were
announced by Club Manager, Dave Belling. The
Club Championship trophy was presented to Sue
Underwood and the Presidents Cup was presented
to Kris Kugel. Congratulations to both ladies for
great playing!

of FOSCC next year. The majority at the meeting
voted to approve this event for next year.
Karen Charles announced that the Summer Ladies
League for the 18 hole group will have only one tee
time this year and that will be at 10:00 a.m.
Sharon Shuman said that the Memorial Fund
currently has no projects.
MAY GOLF: May 7 – League Play at 10:00

Cup at 10:00 a.m.
I am heading back to Colorado for the summer.
Bonnie Prioreschi has graciously volunteered to report
the news to you for that time period. If you would like
anything included in the articles, please contact her.

OK golfers, who put the calendar on Fast Forward
that caused the “winter” to fly by so quickly? Seems
like many of you just arrived at your FOS home and
now you have packed up and left, BUT just for a few
months. We look forward to your return and those of
us left behind will hold down the fort.
Am sure many of you noticed the strange captions
with the April photos. We all make mistakes, or at
least most of us do, so please accept the apologies
from the Sun Times publisher when one happens
at their office; AND, please note the corrections
this month.
The Spring Fling was a success thanks to Carl
Pearce who stepped up and our retiring President Oz.
The music was great, the food from Midwest Meats
very tasty, plentiful and the Mixers video brought
back many wonderful memories. Yes, remember
those days when we were slimmer, had different
colored hair (and I don’t mean purple or green), and
gathered for golf fun at many different courses.
For any of you that could not attend our April
general meeting, the League voted to continue to golf
at the F.O.S. Golf Course with just a few minor adjustments. First off, you will need a new number when
you return to golf in the fall so just keep that in mind.

FOSCC 9 Hole Men’s Golf
By Bob Bormuth
Our annual tournament was concluded on March
27. We enjoyed the warmer than usual weather during
the 4 days we played.
In Flight A there was a 3-way tie for Club Champion between Carl Pitura, Carl Farnham and Larry
Gordon. It was decided not to have a play off. The
rumor was that they arm wrestled to determine the
winner and that Carl Pitura, the tough old farmer from
Canada came out on top. Carl also had two holes in
one during the tournament. Ron Hildner was one stroke
behind those three.
The President’s Cup Champion was Arv Langenbacher with the lowest net score. Flight A golfers with
the best net scores were Bert Tagg, first; Ed Hatch,
second and Bud Buckendahl, third.
Flight B golfers with the best gross scores were
Jim Grindberg, first; Bob Bormuth, second; and
Keith Clark, third. Those with the best net scores were
George Martens, first; Russ Militello, second and Leo
Cummins, third.
Have a great summer, everyone…see you next fall!

We have a new “Summer Membership Plus”

right! It’s for the entire year, not just the summer. In
addition, you may use the golf course from April

(charges, of course, will be put on your membership
number). Furthermore, if you have friends who live
outside of Fountain of the Sun, this membership
opportunity is also available to them.
The cost of this membership is $234.00 for a
single and $398.00 for a couple living in the same
household. There is a restaurant minimum associated with this summer membership of $360.00 per
person ($30.00 per month) which includes food and
beverage combined. Remember, this opportunity
gives you unlimited use of the Restaurant/Lounge
for a full 12 months.
There are also a number of other membership
options available. Please contact the administration
office staff (phone 986-3158) in the clubhouse
lower level, Dave Belling or one of the board members for further details. This might be a good time to
check into these other options.
Have a safe and healthy summer and stay cool!

Here’s the line up of players for the final
Horse Race of the season.
By Peggy Koppelman
March and earlyApril were again filled with busy
days for the 9-Hole Ladies.
At the General Meeting April 7th, Alta Norman
asked for thoughts and prayers for Shirley Tagg’s
sister, Pat Clark, Leo Cummins, Jane Kumler, and
Jeff Martinson.
Mention was made of the new pictures that have
been posted on the bulletin board. Shirley Tagg,
Bulletin Board Chair, also suggested an idea to help
us get acquainted with new members. A poster with
the caption “Have You Met Me?” will hold pictures
of our new members, including Mary Meyers,
Doneta Etter, Connie Solberg, Jan Springer, and
Wilma Williamson. Our hope is that this will help
them feel welcome.
Nancy Thomas expressed thanks from all of us
to Sylva Kiernan for her years of service to our organization. She calls social members to tell them about
upcoming events and has also sold tickets for many
functions. Pat Hall and Sharon Ware have agreed to
resume those duties next fall.
Jane Kumler reported that the “Rally For The
Cure” was again very successful. 39 women signed
up to golf and contributed $780 to the Susan G.
Komen organization. An additional collection was
made at the 10th Hole Mixed League, where another $520 was collected. 43 women enjoyed the
delicious lunch.
First place winners of the game played that
day were: Gail Mutcher, Helen Cummins, Sharon
Ellerbeck and Jane Pugh. Golf balls or pins were
presented to Shirley Grindberg, Jan Lenz and Mary
Tjelmeland for birdies and to Ima Tayerle, Jan Olson,
Shirley Grindberg, Joan Pitmon and Calli Kitchen
for chip-ins.
One more important golf note - Jan Olson and
Bobby Reid were Medallion winners this spring.
Congratulations, gals!!!
The next board and general meetings will be held
Oct. 20th. Then the fall season will start with a bang
-- a 9-18 Hole Tournament Nov. 10th (Calli Kitchen,
chair) and the Christmas Luncheon Dec. 9th with the
theme “Santa Claus is Coming to FOSCC”, (Mary
Ellen Hatch and VJ Houston, chairs).
Golf dues of $35 are due Nov. 1st, 2014 and will
be delinquent December 1. Have a great summer!!!

Club Assists
Residents in Need
By Jerry Hanson
Remember back in the day when we were all
a little younger and how neighbors were always
quick to pitch in and help each other? You could
always call upon them if something came up and
you needed a little assistance.
Many of our F.O.S. residents do not have family
nearby for support, whether it’s help with in-home
care, tasks around the house or a ride to a doctor’s
appointment. Members of the FOS Citizens Service
Club want to be that good neighbor by helping those
in this great community with various jobs residents
are unable to handle because of age, health, physical
or financial disability. To date, club volunteers have
performed many, many tasks for our neighbors in
F.O.S., making new friends and acquaintances
along the way.
Can you use a helping hand? Please call Harry
& Katie Gibbens, our volunteer coordinators at
685-3268, or pick up a form from either the FOSCA
or FOSHA office. You too can be involved with
being a good neighbor while living life that matters.
The next meeting of the Citizens Service Club is
Tuesday, May 6 at 4:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room.
If you’re interested in this friendly club, come to
the meeting. For more info, please contact Gene
Gresham, membership chairman at 380-7786.

Computer Club
News
By Sherry Bye
Many of the winter visitors have left and head
north for the summer. We wish all a safe trip and look
forward to your return in the fall.
This might be a little late for some, but here are a
few hints that Lynn discussed at her class in March
about cleaning up our computers. It is recommended
that you have a specific thumb drive (flash drive)
or a large DVD that will hold all of the pictures
you’ve collected over the winter and your most
precious documents. Label clearly (don’t write on
the DVD; use a label). Set up a new restore point,
delete browsing history, do disk defragment and disk
cleanup. These two websites provide maintenance
and clean up tutorials. http://www.wikihow.com/
Perform-Scheduled-Maintenance-in-Windows and
http://www.wikihow.com/Keep-Your-ComputerFast,-Clean,-Safe-and-good-Looking. It is also
recommended that you remove the Arizona dust
that accumulates in our computers. Use canned air to
blow away the dust (don’t tip the can; hold upright).
This is an annual class offered each March and I
recommend you attend to keep your computer and
data “Clean & Safe.”
Check the website (http://www.foscomputerclub.
webs.com) this summer, especially the blog section.
Watch for our 2014-15 class schedule on the website
and sign-up sheets will be posted as soon as times are
set. General Meetings will be held the third Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Activitiy Center
and the weekly Q & A are held every Monday at 2
p.m. in the Computer Lab. Watch for more speakers
this year including representatives from computer
repair and purchase businesses in the area.
Membership is required to attend the classes,
Monday Q & A Sessions and the General Meetings. Information on membership will be available
in the fall.

Christmas Stocking Project presented
to FOS Lions by (l. to r.): Carol Taddon
& Fern Skidmore. (They say the project
keeps them out of the bars, ha!)
Text & photo by Kay Stoterau
The Mesa FOS Lions finished off the year with
their annual picnic and installation of officers in
April. Since the event was held after April 10, pictures, etc. will be reported in the next issue.
One of our final programs was a presentation by
Carol Taddon and Fern Skidmore on the Christmas
Stocking Project for Homeless Children. Last
year their group cut out, sewed, painted and filled
over 3,000 Christmas stockings that were distributed
to children. Jean Prine will chair this project to accomplish even more at Christmas 2014. Stockings
are filled with coloring books, crayons, candy,
personal care items, tooth brushes and paste, cereal
bars and a special Beanie Baby. If FOS residents
have any of those items they would like to donate
to this project, you can bring them to a Lions Club
meeting or contact Jean. You may ask why the cereal
bars. Well, when the children are not in school to be
fed over the holidays, this is a real treat and much
needed nourishment. With over 30,000 homeless
in the Valley, we can add a bit of joy to these kids.
At the recent district convention members
learned of the International Project to help eliminate
measles. With the generosity of the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation and the Abhey & Aruna Oswal
family, every dollar contributed by Lions will grow
from $1.00 to $4.00 to provide vaccines. Wow, what
a deal! Our Club was excited to donate their Tail
Twister funds to this.
We have some fun projects planned for the coming year, one that will appeal to those with a sweet
tooth. Watch for further info in the fall and you will
learn how Lions members can fulfill that craving.
Watch for the flags flying en mass over the
Memorial Day Holiday in May. If you don’t have
a flag for your front yard contact a Lions Club
member soon so that the insert can be installed
and the Flag flying on that special holiday. There
are also brochures in the hallway at the office with
complete information on how you can be a part of
this program. All funds raised goes to various charity projects as well as FOS community needs. One
example is the fountain at the 80th Street entrance
completely purchased, erected and maintained by
the Mesa FOS Lions as well as flags that fly in the
same area for 6 national holidays. This is just one
way that the local club lives up to the Lions Motto
- We Serve!
WHO: Anyone –Beginners to Advanced – Men
and Women – YOU
WHAT: Stained Glass and Fused Glass class in one
WHEN: Every Thursday, 1 – 4 pm
WHERE: FOS Craft Room
WHY: To learn how you can take a piece of glass –
cut and fit and fuse in a kiln OR solder pieces together
for your one of a kind masterpiece. Exciting creations
can be made by people who think they have no artistic
ability. You will be amazed how easy it is. A small
fee of $10 for a 3-hour class once a week is money
well spent with good, interesting and fun people. It’s
a chance to meet new friends.
For more info and a list of supplies please call me
(Dona Kahler) at 480-357-7066 or 480-226-4302.
Vets & Servicemen
Breakfast
By Luther Strunk
Vets and servicemen, their wives and friends
(U.S. & Canada), are all invited to breakfast at
the Lakeside Pool Room (old Chatterbox Café)
on Friday, May 8th at 9 a.m. Chef Dave will serve
the chow line.
The gift box will be drawn for a lucky winner.
Guest speaker will talk on a topic of your choice.
Our request is that you bring a pair of tube socks
or more for the homeless veterans.
We are planning for a Memorial Day flag pole
dedication on May 26th at 11 a.m. We would like
to have as many veterans attend as possible. Don’t
forget to mark your calendars for these two dates.
Hope to see you there!
