1776 YeArt- Declaration of Independence

Objectives:
 Illustrate the main idea of the event within the borders of the year that it happened.
 Use specific and predetermined vocabulary words to write a summary statement about the event.
Purpose:
 This activity can serve as an evaluation tool. The students will use their artistic abilities along with their summarizing skills to retell the
teacher what they understand about the event, and is also a wonderful vocabulary review.
Rules:
 Illustration:
o Draw something that is relevant to the event and meaningful to you.
o Do not draw outside the borders of the event year.
o Use as much as color in your illustration as you possibly can.
 Summary:
o Write a short summary about the event that you illustrated on the front.
o Use all the vocabulary words listed in the box.
o Spell them all correctly.
o Underline each word in your summary.
o Use complete sentences.
Modifications/ Accommodations:
This activity has worked well for my special education students all the way to my gifted and talented students. To modify it for lower reading and
writing levels, I have limited the vocabulary, or have given them a choice. (choose 3 out of the 5 words to use.) The gifted and talented can be
challenged by creating their own vocabulary list, and then writing the summary statement. Everybody enjoys the artistic integration, because it
gives them a chance to draw and color, which they rarely get to do anymore, and you will notice that they like to compare, and talk about their
pictures with their neighbors, and explain why they chose to draw what they did. The kids get a wonderful experience of different points of
views, and the finished products become great art pieces.
*Note- Have the students keep all of their YeArts (or you can) and bind them at the end of the year. They will become a memento of your year
together, and could very well come in handy for future standardized tests!
