TIME TO GET BLOWN
AWAY AT NO COST
TO MOTHER EARTH
Blowkart
We know it looks so wicked cool
that you speed demons would buy
it anyway, but what exactly is a
blokart? A bike? A plane? Both?
A blokart is apparently a threewheeled wind-powered go-kart
with a sail. It was designed by Paul
Beckett in New Zealand in 1999.
With his extensive knowledge
of hang gliding and land sailing,
Beckett thought he might push the
envelope by combining elements of
the two into one fun, fast and literally mind-blowing creation. And
thanks to Dreamdays, the Dubai
gift experiences company, we in the
emirates can try one out, and even
own one, for ourselves.
Lying back into the hot seat,
gloves, and helmet in place, seatbelt fastened, we took one for a
test drive in the early afternoon,
when the wind was at its best. The
blokart® relies on strong winds
picking up in its sails in order to
move, requiring a minimum of 7
knots (10KM) at all times – any
lower and it won’t budge. Any
higher than 35 knots (65KM)
and novices are bound to get
hurt, so leave that for
experienced “sailors”.
Dylan Hone of Dreamdays is an
experienced sailor, and one with a
penchant for tearing up the track at
the Meydan Tennis Academy with
ease, sometimes on two wheels. We
stick to three while memorising
the number one blokarting safety
rule – let go of the rope. That would
be the sheet rope connected to the
sails that sailors hold in one hand
to manage the sails. If the sails are
pulling the rope away from you,
simply pull it in which in turn
makes the kart go faster. Too fast?
Simply loosen your grip on the
rope until more wind gets in the
sails again.
Stopping is just as easy – just
ride directly against the wind…
except we’re not sure we want
to do that just yet.
We rate it: 10/10

just as enjoyed by the fainthearted
because it’s so easy to get a hang of.
We’d definitely make space for this
in our garage, even if opportunities for using it are slightly limited
(particularly during the country’s
stagnant summer) due to its
wind condition restrictions. All
we can suggest is using
www.windfinder.com to keep track

Price: Owning one will set

SMELL LIKE A
CHAMPION
Davidoff Champion
Blood, sweat and tears do not the
smell of victory make. Every champion knows its smell is far more sweet;
quite reminiscent of Davidoff’s highly
alluring new fragrance Champion.
Zesty bergamot and lemon tickles the
nose for a refreshing first whiff. Then
at the heart, galbanum essence and
aromatic clary sage dance head to
head in the ring stirring up pure
sensual energy. And wrapping it
all together are hints of uber masculine cedarwood and oak moss.
In a funky and inspiring package, made of real metal with
a
bevelled grip body and engraved cap, its
dumbbell-shaped bottle certainly puts us in the right
frame of mind to win, and to win big.
