A Word from Principal Lane:
Happy April Moore Mustang
Families, and welcome to the 4-Season
Challenge. Mother Nature seems to want to
have all 4 Seasons packed into one week
sometimes. How blessed we are to live in
lovely East Texas to enjoy them all. With
the change of the seasons, we have a
power packed schedule outlined in this newsletter for our
students to finish the year strong!
Our School Board is once again asking the community
to come out and vote on May 6th. Please take a chance to
evaluate all of the data that our School District is providing on
the bond package and exercise your right to vote. Information
can be found on the District website to learn more about the
options that are being proposed for the high schools.
This edition of the Mustang News will highlight many academic
and athletic achievements. We have had a great School Year
to date and as we have been promoting all year, “if we are
going to play a game, then we plan on winning!” Please help
us pep our students up to do their best in performing on all of
the State Spring Assessments and on the STAAR tests. The
remaining testing dates are as follows:
May 2nd Algebra EOC
May 8th STAAR Math 6,7 Retest 8
May 9th STAAR Reading 6,7 Retest 8
May 10th STAAR Science 8
May 11th STAAR Social Studies 8

We have a great class of 100 fifth graders that are receiving their invitations to attend
Moore this week from our annual recruiting efforts. We were pleased to receive almost 200
applications to attend Moore for 2017-2018.
Please help us recognize our students for their great accomplishments and join us on
some of the upcoming events listed this month.
Thank you for helping us continue to win in Mustang Country!

Laughter
by Jernai Mosley
Laughter. Laughter is the key to the door that opens your heart.
Laughter. Laughter is the sound you hear when you get a belly tickle.
Laughter. Laughter is when your cheeks turn red and you can even feel it in your head.
Laughter. Laughter is important; turns the sad to the happy and the weak to the strong.
Laughter. Laughter cheers up someone who is down.
Laughter. Laughter is what makes the world spin in orbit.
Laughter. We pass laughter down from generation to generation, so one day we can have a
laughing nation.
Further congratulations to 7th grade author Jernai Mosley for earning 1st place in the East
Texas State Fair writing competition. The prompt was “If you could have a super power, what
would it be and what would you do to help others?”

September 2016
Spring has finally arrived and hopefully beautiful days are here to stay! This second semester is busy
with lots of academic, music, and sports performances, including our opportunity to shine on STAAR
testing. Our 5th Grade Recruitment night had many future Mustang families attending and the D-FYIT Dance was lots of fun and our volunteer help was great!
The Exhibit Fair/Hamburger Supper was a wonderful success. The students have been working hard
all year and they displayed their work in science, social studies, math, and other areas too! We have
such talented students at Moore who have been led by their wonderful teachers! Thank you for coming
out and supporting our students and our PTA. Thanks also to this year's PTA Board for the incredible
job they have done. If you are interested in a board position next year, please let me know. We would
love to get you involved!
We still have a busy year ahead with STAAR testing, UIL competitions, dances, awards assemblies,
and concerts. Be sure to get these dates on your calendar so you won't miss anything! I look forward to
these events and hope many of you will be involved. I am honored to be part of such a great school!
Make it a great day!

Moore MST MathCounts advances to State
Competition
This week, 8
students from
Moore MST traveled to UT Tyler to compete in the
East Texas chapter MathCounts competition. At this
year’s competition, Moore MST took home multiple
awards. The team, consisting of Amy Christian, Mary
Angelie Fullo, Nathan Noland, and Shobhit Gupta,
coached by Tamara Bowers placed 3rd overall against
all teams in East Texas. Shobhit Gupta received
individual honors placing 3rd individually against
approximately 60 other competitors. This ranking has
advanced him to the state competition in Austin on March 25th. Shobhit also placed 2nd in the
Countdown Round in which students compete head-to-head in an intense, jeopardy-style contest.
Way to go Mustang Mathletes!

INCOMING 7TH GRADERS
Immunization Requirements for Texas Schools
For Incoming 7th graders:
Tdap = Tetanus/Diphtheria/ acellular Pertussis
1 dose of Tdap is required if at least 5 years have passed since the last dose of tetanus-containing
vaccine
MCV4 = Meningococcal
1 dose required on or after the student’s 11th birthday. Note: If the student received the vaccine at 10

Our goal is to have 100% of all 6th graders immunized by May 1st.
All sixth graders who have turned in their shot records to the nurse with
the required vaccinations for the seventh grade will be eligible to attend a
yummy ice cream party.

Sixth Grade
Social Studies
Learners in Ms.
Cromartie’s 6th grade
World Culture classes
were given in-depth study
of European history from
the Greek and Roman
Empires to the Cold
War. In their studies, they
paused to commemorate
the Soviet troops who
liberated Auschwitz, a
concentration camp in
Poland. All classes
discussed, watched, wrote, and illustrated the movie version of John Boyne’s novel The Boy in
the Striped Pajamas. This was done to give learners a better understanding of how silence
against atrocities demoralizes the oppressed and demonizes the oppressor. In the words of
Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor,
never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”

The Academic Challenge Team
The Academic Challenge Team, coached by Mrs. Stephenson, had a great run competing
against 18 other area schools in the 2016-17 Academic Challenge Quiz games at the East
Texas State Fair Grounds. The Moore team placed 3rd overall and are eligible for Academic
Rodeo Scholarships.
Academic Challenge Quiz is an exciting, fast-paced contest in a quiz bowl format. The Middle
School Tournament for students in grades 6th through 8th is a double-elimination format
which highlights the knowledge and thinking skills of middle school students. We are very
proud to say that we are the only public school to place, and we look forward to the challenge
of competing again next year.
The members of the Moore Academic Challenge team are as follows:
Olivia Orren 8th grade
Caroline Richbourg 8th grade
Shobit Gupta 8th grade
Chloe Vaughn 8th grade
Isaiah Glanton 7th grade
Ben Boynton 7th grade
Congratulations PTA
Reflections Award Winners!

Hamburger Supper
On Tuesday,
February 7th the PTA
hosted a Hamburger
Supper and a
display of student
exhibits in the
hallways. The dance
class provided four
dance routines of
entertainment for the
supper. Student
displays colorfully
decorated the
hallways with
projects from all of
the core classrooms.
Science Fair boards
were on display to
showcase the work of our students. The Robotics Club proudly had a live action display to
roam the hallways with their student-designed mobile rogues. Parents and students were able
to vote on the best-decorated hallway, which went to the 1st floor sixth grade wing for their
collaborative efforts to bring our guests Mooreopoly. Mooreopoly is a creative spin-off of the
board game
Monopoly where
parents and
students were given
water to sign in for
the night and then
asked to move
forward towards
“Go”. The sixth
grade teachers won
a free lunch from
McAlister’s Deli for
their efforts.
Thank you to
everyone for making
this a fun family
night on the Moore
campus!
