AP Spanish Summer Assignment

AP Spanish Language and Culture
Señora Eckerson
Summer Assignment 2017
¡Felicitaciones! I am glad that you have chosen to continue your study of Spanish through the AP level.
This will help you to be as well prepared as possible for Spanish courses when you enroll in college.
The AP Spanish Language Exam (May 2018) is designed to test your skills in order to see how well they
compare to abilities found in a third year college class. The exam will test all of the major language
skills: reading comprehension, writing skills, speaking ability and listening comprehension, in addition
to general cultural knowledge of the Hispanic world. Therefore, you will need to continue your
practice in your skill areas this summer. The goals of this summer assignment are to improve your
vocabulary so that you can communicate better in writing and speaking next year, to become familiar
with various aspects of a Spanish-speaking culture, and to familiarize yourself with the 2017 AP
Spanish Language and Culture exam.
You will need to buy a composition book from the store. Then, using 2 tabs, divide the book into 2
equal sections. You can do this easily with a sticky note. Call the first section “vocabulario” and the
second section “cultura”.
Summer Assignment #1
Your first assignment will be to keep a list of vocabulary that you learn this summer. You will do this in
your notebook under the first section “vocabulario”. How are you going to learn it? Read things
online!!! The vocabulary should be at an AP level. It should not be words that you already know. You
will number each word and next to it, write a synonym in Spanish. Use www.wordreference.com to find
your synonyms. Have at least 200 words in your notebook. Use the front and back of each page. This
assignment is worth 100 points and is due the first day of school.
Summer Assignment #2
Your second assignment will be to research culture related to the Spanish-speaking country I will assign
you (if you are receiving this document after the end of the school year, email me and I will assign you a
country). You will do this under the second section “cultura”. Use the Internet to investigate. You will
write 100-150 words in Spanish about each of the following topics of research. On each page, start with
the number and the topic. Then, write down the website(s) you consulted to gather your info. On the
rest of the page, write your research. You may use the front and back of each page. Use your own
words in Spanish in order to avoid plagiarism. Do not copy directly from the website. Copying will result
in a 0. I know your writing abilities, and it is a red-flag when something is turned in that is clearly above
your natural ability. This assignment is worth 100 points and due the first day of school.
1. El gobierno
2. El papel de la mujer en la sociedad y/o en la familia
3. Un desafío medioambiental
4. El uso de las redes sociales
5. Un héroe
6. El bienestar social
7. El ecoturismo
8. La identidad étnica
9. El ocio
10. Las tradiciones y los valores
Bring your notebook on the first day of school. Be ready to share vocabulary and/or culture that you
learned this summer!
