Grizzly Football 2016 To be the flag bearers of Glacier Peak High School Football embracing perseverance, commitment, tradition, honor and excellence. Above the Line “WE ARE GP!” Grizzly Football Glacier Peak High School 7401 144th PL. SE Snohomish, WA 98296 Nick Bender, Head Football Coach 360-990-2385 [email protected] Players and Parents, The information accumulated in this packet is designed to give potential Glacier Peak Football Players and their parents the answers to many questions that are common at this time of year. Being a part of Grizzly Football in 2016 is going to be an exciting and beneficial experience that I am sure your family will enjoy. If I can be of any help, or if you should have any questions please do not hesitate to email or call. Respectfully, Nick Bender Dear Football Parents, As Coaches, we would like to share with you our philosophy and our goals for football, with the hope that you will better understand the methods and procedures of the Grizzly Football Program. If Football were just a game of fundamentals, i.e. blocking, tackling, passing, and kicking our dedication would not be very deep. If it were just win-loss records, it probably would not be worth all the effort most of the parents will put into it this year. We say this because, regardless of how great an athlete you are raising, there will come a day in his life when he will play his last game. If all he has learned are fundamentals of the game then he will be ill-prepared for that day, because he must then start again in some other field, at the bottom. Fundamentals of any sport must be stressed, but we believe that the lessons he learns in Football can be taken into all other phases of his life. These lessons include more than just fundamentals. We want your son to have every opportunity to become a good football player, but more than that, and we believe you will agree, we want him to be a fine gentleman and be better prepared to take his place in life, as a result of having played football. We believe the key to a good athletic program and to being a gentleman is DISCIPLINE. That is, and will remain, the main theme of Glacier Peak Football Program as long as you allow us to coach your son. Involved in the word “discipline” are teamwork, enthusiasm, obedience, leadership, desire, organization, love, fun, confidence, unselfishness, achievement, good habits, character, courage, and success. These characteristics do not disappear when he plays his last game. Also, involved in the word “discipline” are blood, tears, bruises and physical exhaustion. We wish there was an easy and painless way to learn character, but there is not, in Football or in life. In order to teach these lessons, we as coaches want you to know what our philosophy is before you entrust your son to us. We will not tolerate disrespect, bickering at teammates or officials, loafing, half-effort, temper tantrums, or bad attitudes. These behaviors, if left unchecked, can form a cancer that tears a team apart from the inside. If the team does not win a game, yet they have done their best, then the boys are champions in our eyes. If the team goes undefeated, yet did so with half-hearted and uninspired efforts, then we as coaches have failed your sons, and ground rules have been established for failure later in life. We believe you will be proud of your son and his accomplishments, both on and off the field. We are proud of each of our players and we, the Grizzly coaching staff, wish to thank you for letting us have a part in raising another fine gentleman. Go Grizz! My Mission: My mission is to use football and the lessons it provides as a means of preparing young men to be successful in all aspects of their life! 1. The value of establishing trust and accountability, instilling the belief in people that they can always rely on you. 2. The benefits of hard work and never giving up on something just because it is difficult or frustrating. 3. The importance of being totally committed to a positive cause and staying the course through the tough and trying times. 4. The value of living clean; refraining from drugs, alcohol, smoking and anything else that puts one’s health in danger. 5. The advantages of handling instruction and discipline from another, even though it many difficult at times to hear. 6. The importance of self-discipline; to do what is right no matter how difficult it may be and/or when no one else is looking. 7. The multiplying advantages of working within the framework of a team and being able to sacrifice some individual glory for the benefit of everyone. 8. The importance of being able to persevere during adversity and/or tragedy. 9. The value of being competitive, taking challenges head-on and always pushing forward to achieve success. 10. The benefits of leadership and how widespread one’s influence can become in being a good leader. My Vision: As a result of my mission and using football as my platform, young men will have the tools they need to be successful and happy, allowing them to accomplish the following: They will become outstanding fathers and husbands, taking lessons they learned through their “football family” and applying them toward their own family that they will eventually raise and educate. They will become good providers having success at whatever job, occupation or career they eventually choose. If opportunity arises, they will be prepared to be outstanding leaders of their particular business, industry, organization, community or country. They will make good decisions when negative and destructive situations come their way, and be able to handle trying times and tragedy that they may eventually encounter. And finally, they will pass on much of what they have learned to as many people as possible, knowing that it has been said that even the average person affects as many as 10,000 people in their lifetime…and by no means will they settle for being average! Glacier Peak Football Building Champions for Life Team Expectations Attendance • • • • • • • All practices are mandatory and must be attended. Signature: ______________________________ Printed Name: __________________________ This will be the most important form you will read in this program for 2016. You need to read it at least twice and read it carefully. Then you need to put it somewhere you will see it, making it a constant reminder of what your football season and career will be here at Glacier Peak. As you guys know, Glacier Peak Football is looked at as one of the most prestigious programs in the area. We are a very successful new school football program. We have a very talented group of players that will lead to competitions internally. There are many starting positions that are going to be challenged and there are no guaranteed spots. You are going to have to commit yourself to this program, work harder than you ever have before, and stay clear of any kind of negative influences that will come your way. There are three things we as coaches use to evaluate you for a starting position here at GP. 1. Trust If we can trust you, we can rely on you, and only if we can rely on you will you have any chance to start on this team. Are you a guy who makes every practice and every workout you can? Are you a guy who stays away from trouble and leads a life above the line? Are you a guy who can stay away from the drama that occurs at or outside of school? Are you a guy who refuses to fail a class and who we never have to worry about getting below a 2.0? If all of this and more applies to you and we know we can count on you no matter what, then you are exactly what we are looking for in a starter. Just remember, if we can’t trust you the two other things don’t matter; because trust is the foundations of any starter in our program. 2. Work Ethic When you are at practice how hard do you work? Do you make sure to take care of all the little things the coaches are telling you to do, even when it involves more effort? If you are an offensive back, do you carry the ball high and tight, absolutely refusing to go down? If you are an offensive linemen, do you finish the block with all out intensity and run through anything and everything that gets in your way? If you play defense, do you refuse to be blocked and have a non-stop motor, attacking any man that has the ball in his hands? In the weightroom, do you go until failure and have someone push you to get that one last rep? Do you use good technique with maximum weight, always trying to get a little stronger, while ensuring that you not get injured? Do you do things on your own time after practice or at home- run sprints, do agility runs, run routes, catch balls, watch film? If you do all this you will earn your coaches’ respect and at the same time significantly increase your chances to start of reach any other goal you may have for the season. 3. Ability How good of a football player are you? How do you compare to other guys playing your position on our team? How do you compare to the other guys we will playing against this season? How well do you block, shed blocks, tackle, and break tackles? How fast and strong are you? How physical are you? How well do you know your position? How coachable are you? These are all questions that will be answered on the field. Some of it has to do with what your parents gave you. But the beauty of it is more comes from what you do with number 1 and 2 on this list that anything else. In other words, showing up to everything we do going all out when you get there. Our chances of winning the WESCO 4A Championship and going to the playoffs are as good as or better than any team we have ever had. You are either with us or against us. In other words, you need to be on board 100% or you are going to tear away what our team is trying to accomplish. There is no one player that is going to make or break this team. But if you are with us 100%, you will be a part of history and you will accomplish something that you will never forget. Being a part of this team is a privilege. There are thousands of kids throughout the state who would love to be in your position. You are involved in a top-notch program known throughout the area. You get to play in stadiums full of fans that love you and what you stand for. There is instant respect from people knowing you play football for GP. You have coaches who care about you and are willing to sacrifice huge amounts of time to make your memories of high school football some of the best you ever have. You have one the best off-season programs you can ask for, ensuring you become the best player and man you can be. You need to take advantage of what you have in front of you. The time you have here is short and it is going to be gone before you know if. Every day that goes by without an all-out effort is wasted, and it is a day you will never get back. Some of you will never understand what I am talking about, or when you do it will be too late. For those that do, the sky is the limit. Challenge yourself every day. Take this challenge as far as you can take it. You and only you will see, your time here at Glacier Peak will be one of the best times, if not the best time, you will ever have in your life! Strive to be a 30! 1. Trust (Can we trust you?) 2. Work Ethic (Fanatical Effort 4-6, A to B) 3. Ability (How skilled are you compared to others?) We score each one, 1-10 (30 is perfect score) All weighed equally, #1 and #2 you have complete control of! Rules- 1. Always Protect the Team! 2. Be early, and Compete! 3.
