Motivating children to get fit
can be very challenging. In
today’s society, childhood
obesity is increasing at
frightening rates. To help
alleviate this problem, it is
imperative that parents and
caregivers become actively
involved in their child’s
overall health and well-being.
Being a positive role model by
eating healthy foods and
exercising regularly will have
a significant impact on your
child. Children who participate
in regular physical activity
will reap enormous rewards.
Studies have shown they:

Are more likely to
maintain a healthy weight.

Have less risk factors for
developing diabetes.

Have lower blood
pressure and reduced
blood cholesterol levels.

Have higher self-esteem.

Tend to have strong bones
and muscles.

Perform better and are
more engaged in school.
Special points of interest:
 Please take time to teach
your child the importance
of tying their sneakers. By
doing so, you’ll help
alleviate wasted time and
keep everyone safe while
all students are actively
participating in physical
education.
Here are some helpful tips for motivating
your child to live a physically active
lifestyle.
Be a fit family. Make a daily walk par t of
your schedule or plan weekend hikes.
Take a tech time out. Don’t allow your
children to spend countless hours in front of
a television, a tablet, or video game
controllers. Urge them to take breaks and
move around.
Choose fitness gifts. When your child’s
next birthday comes, pick items that can
make a positive impact on his or her health.
Options include a jump rope, a hula-hoop
or a bike.
Focus on Fun. Lear n what activities
bring your child the most joy and
excitement. By doing so, your child will be
more actively engaged in exercise.
Make play dates. Childr en ar e mor e
likely to be active when they have a friend
to play with. Encourage them to play tag,
ride bikes, or shoot hoops.
Be a role model. Inspir e your childr en to
be active by living a physically active
lifestyle. Whether you practice yoga,
participate in 5Ks or attend the gym
regularly, your children look to you as an
example. Here's your chance to make an
impact on your child.

The students in kindergarten
and first grade have just
finished practicing and
refining many locomotor and
manipulative skills. They will
be transitioning into activities
using scoops. The children
will have the opportunity to
experience a variety of
scoops. They include: one
gallon milk jug, a 1/2 gallon

milk jug and a quart sized
milk jug. This is a fantastic
way to reuse an empty milk
container. It also is a great
way for children to continue
practicing outside of school.
Once we finish our scoops
unit, the children will be
introduced to bowling.
During this unit, the students
will learn the difference
The students will begin the second marking
period learning the important skills associated
with basketball. We will focus on dribbling,
passing and shooting. They will also be
introduced to game concepts and rules.
Students will participate in various basketball
lead-up games that allow students of all ability
levels the opportunity to experience success.
Bowling will follow the completion of our
basketball unit. Bowling is a fantastic lifetime
between strikes and spares.
They will also learn
important rules and skills
associated with bowling.
These skills include: proper
grip, the 3-step approach and
rolling with proper followthrough. The bowling unit
will conclude with “Bingo
Bowling” followed by “Disco
Glow Bowling.”
fitness sport. It contributes to coordination,
balance and motor skill development. During
the unit, the students will be introduced to
bowling terminology, scoring and the rules
associated with the game. Students will also
learn how to use the proper grip and the 3-step
approach when rolling the ball. The bowling
unit will end with “Disco Glow Bowling.” It is
my hope students will find enjoyment that will
lead to a lifetime of bowling fun.
