Pink Panther Geometric Drawing Assignment
This assignment was printed in an August 1987 School Shop periodical. It was designed by a drafting
instructor named John A. Nelson. He noticed a hand sketch of the Owens-Corining fiberglass
Pink Panther and had the idea of turning it into a geometric drawing problem for his drafting students.
The basics of drafting are essential in both mechanical and architectural drafting. Geometric
construction skills and problem solving skills are very important. The Pink Panther provides practice
for both.
As you study the drawing you will find it requires practice with many important geometric
construction techniques and qualities a drafter needs : layout, locating and using tangent points,
bisecting lines, projecting to find swing points for all arcs and radii, compass practice, line work
practice, interpreting current ANSI standard symbols, accuracy, neatness, problem-solving
techniques, and most of all, sequential thinking and reasoning.
This problem has just enough information for you to solve it. No set steps or methods are required
to complete the drawing - one procedure proves as good as any other. The average student should
be able to complete the drawing problem in less than two hours. Students are asked to do all
problem solving independently. Enjoy and GO PANTHERS!
