Senator Kevin Meyer - Alaska Senate Majority

Senator Kevin Meyer
January 2015
Dear Friends and Neighbors:
This month marks the beginning of the first session of the 29th Alaska
Legislature. I’m honored to serve as Senate President , and I’m excited
to be back in Juneau for the 90-day session, which promises to be quite
a busy one.
Each year I send out my annual survey in January. It is very important as
your legislator that I understand how my constituents feel about the
issues facing Alaskans today. You will find the survey questions on page
3, and you can respond either by mail, fax, or go to the website for my
online survey. I send the survey results in April to everyone who provides me their email address via the online survey, and by mail to those
who send their survey in.
Senator Kevin Meyer
Earlier this month, the Senate Majority Leadership laid out five priorities: restore order and sustainability to our fiscal house; provide affordable energy to stabilize our economy and communities;
educate and train Alaskans for the future of our state; protect Alaska’s sovereignty inherent in our
land and resources; and drive leadership in arctic development, research and infrastructure. The
new goals for this session are briefly described below. While we’re going to have to make some
tough decisions this session, I’m very excited and optimistic about what we hope to accomplish
before the end of our 90 day session.
As always, your input is crucial and you are welcome to contact me or my staff with your comments,
suggestions, feedback, or just to say ’hello.’ You can reach my office directly at 907-465-4945, or toll
free at 866-465-4945. If you prefer, you can email me at the following address:

Sincerely,
SENATE MAJORITY GOALS FOR 2015
As a member of the Senate Majority, we will focus
on the following five main goals for 2014:

State Budget —State spending and revenues are
going to be the single biggest priority of the
Alaska State Senate. We will continue to pursue
a phased approach to bring alignment between
revenue and expenditures in order to avoid the
negative repercussions that drastic budget cuts
would cause to our state’s economy. Our desire
is to develop and implement a sustainable
5-year deficit reduction fiscal plan.


Energy — We will work to increase the availability,
reliability, and affordability of energy sources for the
benefit of all Alaskans. We hope to do this by
increasing oil production and commercializing our vast
stores of natural gas. We will build on the momentum
and success of the statewide energy policy, including
moving forward on the in-state gas pipeline.

Education — The Senate Majority supports
educational opportunities and choice for Alaskan
families, as well as improving Alaska’s schools and
student performance. We will look for realistic ways
to promote accountability and positive results in our
classrooms.

Arctic Policy — Our goal is to continue Alaska’s
leadership in Arctic development, research,
infrastructure and opportunity. The United States is
an Arctic nation because of Alaska, and so it is
imperative that we are at the forefront in securing fair
and equitable revenue sharing in federal waters and
federal land for our resources. We will also pursue
federal funding and development of deep water port
infrastructure and polar class ice breakers.
