WW1 Broadcast Resources
2014 sees the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War
and as you are probably aware there is a wealth of programming
scheduled by all broadcasters to commemorate this fact.
The new national curriculum to apply from September 2014 recommends inclusion of the First
World War and the Peace Settlement for Key Stage 3 History, and the subject can also be
taught at Key Stage 2 as a significant turning point in British History. However, the material
will also be useful in teaching other subjects such as English, Art and Music (eg.‘Music in the
Great War’ Radio 3 June 23- July 6).
With the benefit of the ERA
Licence, schools will have a golden
opportunity to build up banks of
audio and video resources to
encourage students to engage with
the subject.
Broadcasters have already announced their seasons of dedicated programming but perhaps
the most ambitious is the WW1 Centenary Season launched by the BBC. This will include
both television and radio programmes together with a dedicated section of their website.
BBC schools also has a dedicated section on their webpage.
A guide to upcoming BBC WW1 programming on TV and Radio can be also be found on the
BBC’s website.
iWonder Guides
Part of the BBC’s project to unlock the learning potential of all BBC content, the first of the
newly launched iWonder interactive guides is focused on World War One. The aim of the

guide will be to allow users to explore new perspectives on the War using audio, video and
textual resources.
Channel 4
Channel 4 has already started a series called ‘Remembering World War I’ which features
well-known actors reading the work of poets from WW1 including Wilfred Owen and
Siegfried Sassoon. These are available from 4 On Demand.
ITV
Local broadcasters have launched their own projects such as Anglia Television’s First World
War Project for Schools.
This will provide a chance for children in the region to come up with a local story from the
First World War and then, if selected, to report on it on ITV News Anglia
To assist our licensees in finding useful teaching resources amongst all this
material, we will continue to publish updates throughout the Centenary Season. Any
feedback from teachers would be gratefully received, particularly examples to be
included on our Case Studies Section.
