SPN 112/113

Final Project: Exploremos nuestra comunidad
SPN 113: Basic Spanish I
PURPOSE:
o The main goal of this project (10% of final grade) is to explore the
community around us, in particular the Spanish-speaking community,
through hands-on investigation in Staten Island or surroundings;
o You will interview a member of our community;
o You will use the language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking
abilities) you have practiced throughout the semester, in order to
complete the project;
o You will write, narrate and create a presentation (by using photo
story or imovie) to summarize the information you learn;
o You will complete this project into three stages:
o Stage #1: Topic selection. Due date: (Week of October 14th 17th)
o Stage #2: First draft of script. Due date: (Week of
November 4th - 7th)
o Stage #3: Final project. Due date: (Week of December 9th 12th)
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:
You will be creating a visual story about a Hispanic person you know.
1. You will choose a member of the Hispanic community and share
his/her identity to your professor and your classmates. You will be
required to justify why you have chosen this person and how he/she
meets the desired requirements of this project (Stage # 1: Topic
selection);
2. You will write a “script” in Spanish for your visual story, which is the
narration you will record. This script will be turned in to your
professor. It needs to be typed, double-spaced (Stage # 2: First
draft of script);
1
3. You will gather images that will be come the visual illustration of your
script. These can be pictures you take, images found online, and can
also be scanned from print sources;
4. You will use applications such as photo story (for Microsoft users) or
imovie (for Mac users), which are used in order to put your images in
order, record your script, write captions in Spanish for your pictures
and add music and visual effects. Consider using the tutorials found at
www.ml.csi.cuny.edu/lab (for photo story) or
www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/#enjoy (for imovie);
5. Your final project should be around 4-5 minutes long (Stage #3: Final
project).
PROJECT STEPS:
1. Gather your information:
Your investigation will be to conduct an interview with your subject. Do as
much as you can in Spanish. If you need extra information that you do not
know how to ask, you may use English. Take detailed notes or record (video
