Analyzing the Text
1. Reread the following and then answer the question:
“We have a new pastime, namely, filling packages with powdered gravy. […] Mr.Kugler hasn’t been able to
find anyone else to fill the packages, and besides, it’s cheaper if we do the job. It’s the kind of work they do
in prisons. It’s incredibly boring and makes us dizzy and giggly. Terrible things are happening outside. At any
time of night and day, poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. […] Families are torn apart
[…] Children come home from school to find their parents have disappeared. Women return from shopping
to find their houses sealed, their families gone.”
Why hasn’t Mr.Krugler been able to find anyone else to fill the packages of powdered gravy?
2. What is the effect of repetition in Anne’s statement that “All we can do is wait… Jews and Christians alike
are waiting, the whole world is waiting, and many are waiting for death”?
3. A simile makes a comparison between two unlike things using the word like or as. What does Anne Frank
reveal about her perspective with her use of the simile “I see eight of us in the Annex as if we were a patch of
blue sky surrounded by menacing black clouds”?
4. Over what span of time are the entries in this excerpt from the diary written? Explain how Anne’s perspective has changed during this time and why.
