Thank you. It is because so many of you believed in our dream, and saw the vision of a place where those in our community could come together for Help and Hope, that we are able to announce that renovation of the Sr. Claudia Burke Center for Hope has begun. Soon, the necessary demolition and heavy work of elevator construction and vital updates will commence, ensuring the historic restoration of this building that has served generations of families in this community. Our Restoring Hope Campaign began with our sights set firmly on providing a barebones, but functional refurbishing of our 67,000 square feet of space, with a $5.5 million budget. We have struggled during the course of the campaign, hoping always for the best, believing in our purpose, and in our mission to serve. Today, thanks to a number of alternative funding opportunities, we are preparing to set in motion a nearly $10.2 million project that will create an attractive, highly functional space, as well as preserve the architectural and historic legacy of this building that continues to welcome residents who seek our help, regardless of their faith or situation in life. Thanks to these alternatives, we are closing a funding gap of less than $2 million and have set our sights on completing construction by late summer 2017! Our community continues to struggle against ongoing economic turmoil and the ongoing water crisis. We believe the Center for Hope will play an essential role in reaching out to those in need and giving them a hand up toward a brighter , healthier future. We invite you to visit us in the coming months volunteer, donate and pray with us as we work together to make the Center for Hope all that we know it can be. Scope of Work The former St. Michael School building has touched the lives of countless Flint residents, and the preservation and stewardship of this important community landmark has been carefully considered in all renovation planning. For that reason, the architectural firm of Quinn Evans, Ann Arbor, has designed an open, welcoming space that provides a safe place, reflecting a spirit of community and belonging. Flint’s Siwek Construction has taken on the task of making the Center for Hope an uplifting and comfortable place where those in need can find vital social services. When completed, the Center for Hope will be a positive example of community revitalization with a beneficial influence on the neighborhood and the city. Restoring Hope Campaign Update Page 2 Page 3 Funding Sources Our Partners in Hope The Center for Hope is moving forward taking full advantage of a number of funding opportunities, including New Market Tax Credits (NMTC), which it will close in late summer 2016. Construction will begin with funding from Catholic Charities efforts, available in April, placing the project in service by June 2017. We will also be drawing down on funding from the State of Michigan in late summer of this year. At that time, all funding will be approved From the very beginning, Catholic Charities has known that the best way to serve this community is with the collaboration and cooperation of like-minded partners. That idea is making this one-stop human service community center possible. GHS (Genesee Health System) has been involved with the development of the Center for Hope since the early days of planning. GHS will occupy space on the second floor of the Center for Hope along with Hamilton Community Health Network, which is planning a clinic in the former library space. Preliminary planning is underway that will see the entire third floor utilized for job training and economic development. These key community partners, and the others to come, are the foundation of our vision of a place where clients, families and guests will spend time in a safe, healthy environment that provides essential services to those in need. and in place to compete construction. To date, more than $4.5 million in Historic and New Market Tax Credit equity, which will be available in April of 2016 with NMTC equity will be available at the closing of financing. A Place of Light and Hope in Flint In October 2015 we anticipated a $2.5 million gap, which was reduced to $1.5 million in December, with support from the Diocese of Lansing and a private family foundation. A History of Hope People and Programs Above all else, the Center for Hope is about people. This project is dedicated to finding more and better ways to serve the people who come to us for help. In this city that helped to build America, hope is often in short supply. Jobs are scarce — violence, homelessness and crime are ever-present. Young people are being raised in an environment of poverty and despair, an environment that is destroying families. Funding for the most basic needs has diminished. Help is needed. The Center for Hope is the beginning of a new path for the recovery of the people of Flint, ex- panding programs and services to those in need. Along with its collaborative partners, the Center for Hope offers case management and access to counseling and mental health services; medical care, substance use disorder treatment and recovery services; job training and development; housing assistance and referrals for food and furniture; a laundry room, shower room and a good hot meal. Helping Hands Catholic Charities has been blessed by the dedication and guidance of many talented individuals during the Restoring Hope campaign From our Honorary Chair, Virginia Landaal, and Campaign Chairman, Robert T. Sibilsky, to our Project Manager, Jim Hall, a GM retiree who never dreamed that working in our Mary Garden would have turned into a nearly full-time “volunteer” job, and the many committee members and volunteers, who have helped turn our vision into reality. Among those we rely on for invaluable advice and counsel are Michael Freeman of Hallux Consulting, and the talented staff of Plante Moran. Michael Freeman came to us with more than 20 years of progressive experience in the community, economic and real estate development industry. He underwrote and provided technical assistance on over $19 million in LISC investments for real estate development in Flint and Genesee County, leveraging more than $65 million in total development. Michael Freeman has been key to positioning us for success with an alternative funding package. Plante Moran is the nation’s 14th largest certified public accounting and business advisory firm, providing clients with financial, human capital, operations improvement, strategic planning, technology selection and implementation, and family wealth management services. Since 1856, the corner of Chippewa Street and Fifth Avenue has been dedicated to the education and development of young lives in Genesee County. St. Michael Parish has built a legacy of hope, and with the help of the Historic Preservation Tax program, Catholic Charities is continuing that legacy, preserving and protecting the building for future generations. This program is one of the nation’s most successful and costeffective community revitalization programs. The Center for Hope is honoring its legacy by refurbishing murals, hallways and classroom spaces, that alumni and new visitors alike will appreciate and enjoy for years to come. $1,500,000 GAP $1,413,000 Historic Tax Credit $3,112,000 New Market Tax Credits $2,000,000 Foundations & Grants $2,097,000 Individual Contributions $10,122,000 GOAL The Water - Hope for Flint Water is the source of life, and most recently, a source of fear and worry for Flint and its residents. Families are unable to use the water in their homes to cook, bath or clean. Children and adults find their health at risk. During this ongoing crisis, Catholic Charities and its Center for Hope continue to be front and center in finding ways to put clean water into the hands of those who need it. The focus is not only on residents, but on the many ways that water is used throughout the agency from the preparation of more than 15,000 meals each month in our three soup kitchens, to drinking fountains and future laundry and shower facilities in the refurbished Center for Hope. While testing on the water here has shown our water to be safe, we continue to be vigilant today, and are looking to possible purification and distribution mechanisms that will keep those who come to us safe tomorrow.
