Health Benefits of Water
Most people know that water is important and they should drink water every day.
But how much water should a person drink each day?
While this seems like a very simple and basic question,
there is no straightforward answer to be given. Countless
studies have been done that point to the important role
water plays in our health and well-being but none have
resulted in a definitive answer to the question of how
much water does a person need? Much seems to rely on
activity level, metabolism, and environmental factors.
Although no single formula works for each individual,
having a better understanding of how water works in the
body and the benefits it brings can help you keep water
at the forefront of your mind.
Daily Intake
Water helps your body run smoothly by:
 Keeps body temperature regulated and at a normal
level.
 Aids in perspiration and normal body functions.
 Helps keep blood flowing.
 Lubricates joints and tendons and helps support
and cushions joints and ligaments.
 Protects and strengthens the sensitive tissues
including the brain, nerves, and spinal cord.
 Helps rid the body of waste.
 Moisturizes the skin and keeps hair looking
smooth.
Water is essential for just about all of the body's
functions. You need to drink water so your body
maintains the levels needed- what you lose needs to be
replaced as they body cannot produce its own water supply. Drinking water is the only
way
to
prevent
dehydration
and
keep
the
body
hydrated.
You might need more water if you....
 Live or work in hot climates and are exposed to extreme heat.
 Are more physically active or on the go.
 Have a fever, are sick, or have diarrhea or vomiting.
 Have
a
chronic
health
condition
that
wears
you
down
easily.
To help you stay hydrated, remember that it's important to drink water before you
start to feel thirsty. Thirst is a signal of dehydration and by the time it registers that you
are thirsty enough to drink, your body
has already been dehydrated.
What about 8 glasses of water a day?
Ever since childhood we have been
taught that we need to drink eight 8ounce glasses of water every day. That
works out to around 2 liters which is in
line with what the Institute of Medicine
recommendations for the average daily
water intake. Though there is no solid
“proof” to support the "8 by 8" rule it
serves as a good guideline and is easy to
remember. The most important thing to
remember is that it should be 8 servings
of liquid. Water is the best option of all
liquid beverages!
Remember to drink a large glass 30 minutes before your appointment to maximize
healing
and
recovery!
