This week during Daily 5 we
looked at different landmarks situated within our communities in
Alberta. Landmarks such as the
Blue Heron in Barrhead or the TRex in Drumheller were
recognized by the students. Landmarks are
important because
they are a way of identifying a place or a way of helping
find a place. We are currently
reading about Barnaby’s travels
around Alberta. Barnaby is Kate’s
teddy bear and he is travelling
around Alberta with Kate’s father.
He is sending a postcard to Kate
and her classmates after each
place they visit. They have visited
places like Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in Fort Macleod, Royal
Tyrell Museum in Drumheller and
the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage
Village near Vegreville. Hopefully
the students will have a chance to
visit these places some time in the
future.
Have a great weekend!

Grade One
Nice weather, a full week of school and students engaged in their learning, what more could a teacher ask for? We had a great
week and finished our testing for report cards. Report
cards will go home next Friday and parent-teacher interviews will be the following week.
Math
The students continued to work
with the number line this week.
Activities like finding the missing number, adding or subtracting from a given number were
completed. This week the students were introduced to the “I
Have Who Has?” Ten’s Game.
The object of the game is to
identify how many ten’s and one’s
are in each number. The students were given cards. The
first student would start and
say, “I have 8 which has no ten’s,
who has 12?” The next student
would say, “I have 12 which has
one ten and two one’s, who has
one ten and 8 ones (18)?”
Science
What do people need to survive?
What do animals need to survive?
Through brainstorming and
discussion the class decided that
both humans and animals need
food, water, shelter and air to
survive. Next question, what is
the difference between a
domesticated animal and a wild
animal? The answer is,
domesticated animals need taking
care of and wild animals do not.
So what is the difference
between the lives of a chicken
and a penguin? The students
needed to decide which animal
had the better life. They
compared the two animals and
then made a statement arguing
why the animal they chose had
the better life.
