“Scandal and Schism: Protestant Beginnings” with Al McCauley
The idea of Church improvement and change has been raised for centuries leading up to Martin Luther’s
protest in 1517. Fueled by new technology and old resentments, the Catholic Church faced the greatest
challenge to its authority in its 1500 year history. What caused such a major rift in Christianity? We will
explore the decisive elements that brought such immense change in the Church and meet the individuals
who – for good and for ill – forced reform. Al McCauley has been teaching Theology and History at Pius XI
High School in Milwaukee for 20 years. He taught as an adjunct at the UW-Milwaukee’s School of Continuing
Education for three years. Previously, Al served as a Youth Minister for 12 years, at Sacred Heart Parish in
Racine and at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Milwaukee. A frequent speaker on Church History, he has a
Master’s Degree in Religious Studies from Cardinal Stritch University. Al is married and has three children.

“How I find God” with LouAnne Willette, op
Through stories we'll explore the many ways we meet God in daily events. We'll reflect especially how the
poor have spoken to us about God. LouAnne is a Sinsinawa Dominican sister whose early years were spent as
a high school teacher and youth minister, then 15 years in pastoral work in Bolivia. Since returning she has
worked as an ESL director and most recently as a pastoral minister.

“Reform and Renewal: The Catholic Reformation” with Al McCauley
The expression ecclesia semper reformunda (“ the Church is always in need of reform”) was most assuredly
true in the 16th century. How did the Catholic Church respond to the religious and political upheaval caused
by Protestantism? By reforming practices, affirming doctrine and developing a missionary spirit, the Catholic
Church transformed itself – and the world.
