Osedax is the proper name of the
‘Bone-eating snot flower’! These are
zombie worms from the deep sea
which feed on the bones of dead
whales (tasty!).
An Anablep (yes, that’s really its
name!) is a four eyed fish that can see
both above and below the water at
the same time.
The Horseshoe crab has seven pairs of
legs, nine eyes, and a shell the shape
of a flying saucer! These creatures
look like aliens from the deep and
have been around since the time of
the dinosaurs! Living Fossils!
Seahorse have an unusual way
of parenting – during pregnancy,
the male keeps up to 1500 eggs in
its pouch for 9 to 45 days before
fully developed tiny baby seahorses
emerge (now that’s a cool dad!).
A parrotfish sleeps in a bubble of its
own snot! This hides their smell from
predators and yes, they eat it for
breakfast in the morning!
Starfish can pop off one of their
legs if caught by a predator!
Once they escape, they then
just grow a new leg to replace
the missing one!
Starfish eat with their stomachs
inside out! As they climb onto
their prey, use their sticky legs to
pull open the shells of creatures then
push their stomach out through their
mouths, digests the animal and slurp
up the tasty soup!
Hagfish are the slimiest creatures
on earth! The Atlantic hagfish can fill
a bucket with its own slime in only
60 seconds!

A Vampire Squid has its own cloak,
flies like a bat, and can hypnotise its

on its arms - spooky!

The parrotfish eats hard coral growing
in the topics. Parrotfish poop comes out
as white sand and this makes up to
70% of beautiful white sandy beaches!
Just one parrotfish can produce an
entire tonne of white sand every year!
Electric eels and electric rays
can produce enough electricity
to kill a horse.
When a sea cucumber is threatened, it can discharge sticky threads
to capture their enemy. They can also
shoot some of their internal organs
out through their bum as a defence
mechanism (don’t worry they can be
regenerated again)!
Yeti crab – A squat lobster with
unusually furry arms. It is thought to
be blind and lives in the dark around
deep sea hydrothermal vents.
Bacteria live in the hairs and help
to feed the crab.
