JUMP FOR JOY –ALLITERATION JULY, 2016 EDITION
With the school year coming to a close, many of the kids we know are ready to
Jump for Joy! All those ‘J’ sounds got us thinking about alliteration this month.
What is alliteration? Alliteration refers to words that start with the same sound. We
love alliterating with our kids. How many ‘p’ sounds can you hear in “Peter Piper
Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers”??
Why do we love alliteration? Being able to identify the first sounds in words is a very
important phonological awareness skill. Before kids can learn to read, they need to
be able to segment words into their parts. Playing around with words that start with
the same sound is a great way of bringing these initial sounds to your kids’ attention!

BOOK OF THE MONTH
This book is positively packed in
amazing alliteration. This book
makes a fantastic addition to any
kids’ library. While this book is
geared toward beginning readers,
it is great for readers of all ages.
App Review
Everyday Objects
Top tips: If your kiddo is not yet reading, make sure
you really exaggerate the beginning sounds to draw
his/her attention to the beginning sounds on each
page. As your child gets good at hearing first
sounds, see if he/she can come up with other words
that could be added to the story (e.g. what else
starts with ‘m’? mustard? Your marvellous monster
is covered in mustard??). Kids who are already
reading may find it fun to go on “hunts” for the
target first letter (e.g. how many ‘m’s can you find
on this page?)

NEW IN RESEARCH
A study conducted over 10 years in Iceland has
shown a strong relationship between phonological
awareness skills (the skills required to learn to read)
at age 5 and academic performance when they
were tested again in Grade 4, 7 and 10. The
researchers also found a relationship between oral
comprehension skills (i.e. understanding what is said)
and their performance in later grades.
What does this mean for us?
This study doesn’t tell us why this relationship exists,
but it does suggest to us that early intervention is
key! Supporting language and literacy skills early on
is important for giving kids the foundation for later
school success!
