COMBINED APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE AND NATIONAL D-DAY MEMORIAL CAMPOUT

Concept
o Fri: drive (4 hrs w/dinner stop – maybe more with traffic), set up camp
at Holiday Lake State Park (2759 State Park Rd., Appomattox, VA)
o Sat: earn Appomattox Courthouse Scout History Award and BSA’s Historic
Trails Award (111 National Park Dr, Appomattox, VA)(assume 6 hours plus
lunch)
o Sun: break camp, drive to Bedford (1.5 hrs); visit National D-Day
Memorial (guided tour and individual time); return to Fort Monroe after
lunch (4 hrs – maybe more with traffic)

Holiday Lake State Park Camping

o Group camping area (GroupSite): Up to 30 people. All standard tent
sites, no hookups. Must fit on a 16 x 20 foot pad. Each site has a
picnic table and lantern holder. There's a large shared grill for
the entire area. Water available at entrance to group camping area.
Bathhouse with running water and hot showers nearby. Parking for up
to eight vehicles.
o Cost: $97 (assumption is this is per night).

Appomattox Courthouse

o Hours: 0830-1700 Daily. Closed: Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New
Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, and President's Day.
o Cost: $10/vehicle; patches – nothing listed on website but assume a
fee.
o Appomattox Courthouse Scout History Award:
 Takes around 6 hours to complete the 4.5 mile trail: hiking,
service project, answering the questions (2 handouts).

o BSA Historic Trails Award
 Study the trail or site: completing the Scout History Award
satisfies this.
 Camping at Holiday Lake State Park meets intent of “hike or
camp two days and one night on the along the trail or in the
vicinity of the site.”
 The Scout History Award requirement to police trash in the
parking lot or along the trail meets the final requirement.

National D-Day Memorial

o Hours: Daily 0800-1700; closed on Mon Dec-Feb; closed Christmas, New
Year’s, Thanksgiving
o Reserved Group Tours: pre-arranged tours available at a group rate.
Reservations are required to receive a complimentary walking tour:
reserve no later than 2 weeks prior and place a deposit.
o Costs: adults ($8), children ($5)(don’t know age cutoff), flat fee of
$100 for 12 or less people.
