1. How did Upton Sinclair impact the Meat Packaging Industry in Chicago in the early 1900s?
Upton Sinclair published The Jungle. In this book, he exposed how disgusting and unsafe the Meat
Packaging Industry was in Chicago and in the Meat Packaging Industry in general. This alarmed
citizens who were consumers of the meat. Therefore, he raised public awareness about this
situation.
2. What actions did President Theodore Roosevelt take that showed he supported the Progressive tactics used
to address food sanitation?
President Roosevelt asserted he would use government intervention, if Sinclair’s claims proved true. He
appointed a commission of experts to inspect the claims. He also signed in to law the Meat Inspection Act of
1906 and the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. These were all government interventions, which is exactly what
the Progressive Movement stressed needed to happen.
3. What was the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906? Explain how this impacted the USA then and today.
In the early 1900s, companies made outrageous claims to sell products that did not work. Many
were also contaminated with opium, alcohol, and other drugs. The Pure Food and Drug Act called
for labels to be backed by truth and the removal of contaminations from products.
