Use a system of equations to solve each problem.
1. The larger of two numbers is 8 more than twice the smaller. The sum of the numbers is 10 less than
three times the larger. Find the numbers.
2. The difference of two numbers is 15. Five times the smaller is the same as 9 less than twice the
larger. Find the numbers.
3. Three lemon cremes plus two fudge cookies have 400 calories. Two lemon cremes plus three fudge
cookies have 425 calories. How many calories are in each kind of cookie?
4. The price of a sweater is $5 less than twice the price of a shirt. If four shirts and three sweaters cost
$275, find the price of each shirt and each sweater.
5. The perimeter of a rectangle is 36 meters. The length of the rectangle is 4 meters longer than the
width. Find the length and width of the rectangle.
6. The seventh and eighth grade bands held a joint concert. Together there were 188 band members.
If the eighth grade band is 3 times as big as the seventh grade band, how big is the eighth grade
band?
7. The total value of the $5 bills and $10 bills in a cash box is $410. There are eight more $10 bills than
$5 bills. How many of each are there?
8. Julie has 81 pieces of jewelry. She has twice as many earrings as she has necklaces. How many of
each does she have?
