Madeleine, most young people do sports like track, swimming
or tennis. Why is ice skating your favorite sport?
Because it’s so beautiful.
But is it really a sport?
Yes, it’s an Olympic sport, and it isn’t easy! Madeleine and
I practice every day after school for three hours. And on the
weekend we practice for two hours in the morning and two hours
in the evening. We want to win an Olympic medal one day.
We also have dance lessons once a week because ice skaters
must move well on the ice.
Do you do any other sports?
Well, I do gymnastics at school, and on vacation I go swimming.
I love the ocean, but Martin hates the water.
That’s right. I can’t swim, so I don’t go with Madeleine.
I go mountain biking instead.
So when do you find time to eat and sleep and do your homework?
It’s difficult. We get up at five every morning —two hours before
our friends! Then we have breakfast and do our homework
before school.
We can’t do our homework at night because we’re tired.
We go to bed at nine.
That’s a long day! Well, thank you for speaking with me,
and good luck in the next Olympics!

IT’S FREE RUNNING!
Free running is an exciting new sport from France, but it
has fans all over the world. You don’t usually see free
runners on tracks. You see them in the street or in parks.
They climb walls, jump from building to building and do a
lot of other amazing movements. It is important to move
fast, but it is also important to move beautifully.
Good free runners practice every day. They don’t wear
special clothes, but good running shoes are important.
Free runners sometimes run with their MP3 players and
listen to their favorite music.
Free running is a difficult sport, but it’s very popular with
teenagers. Free runner Robbie Dowling, 17, says, “Free running
is different from sports like track, football or judo. When I
go free running, I don’t want to win or lose; I just want to
have fun. Sure, there are competitions, but they aren’t
important to me or my friends. We don’t take part in them.”
For other young people, free running competitions are
important, and you can watch some amazing videos on
YouTube. You can also watch Sébastien Foucan, the man who
started the sport, free running in the James Bond movie
Casino Royale. Sébastien says that free runners practice all
the time. He also says there is no good or bad in free
running, but it is important to learn from your experiences.
