Manual 092.025.6 Lactodensimeter 15-40 Lactodensimeter General: A hydrometer is a measuring instrument used to determine the relative density of liquids without first calculating its mass and volume. The hydrometer should be used at 20°C liquid temperature. Instructions: 1. 2. 3. 4. Fill a tube of the liquid that is going to be analysed (milk). Put the lactodensimeter carefully into the liquid until it floats freely and vertically. Spin it in the sample until all the bubbles around the neck go away. Take the reading: water will bulge up the side. Do not read that, read at the under most part of meniscus (see picture). Lactodensimeters are glass instruments used to measure milk density and thus, determine if it has been mixed with water, or cream has been partially removed. This lactodensimeter has a graduated stem with a scale between 15 and 40 that corresponds to density thousandths over the unit e.g. the number 32 indicates a density of 1032 kg / m 3.
