PRESS RELEASE April 2014 Re-used plastic bottles behind quick heating sleeping bag Plastic bottles are recycled as a fibre filling for sleeping bags. The recycled filling has a special construction that keeps you comfortably warm and dry all night. When you drink the last sip of water and throw the plastic bottle in the recycling bin it will not burden the environment in a pile at the waste dump. On the contrary, the plastic bottle might come back to you inside your new sleeping bag. Post consumer PET plastic is recycled as fibre filling for the sleeping bag Bering from Nordisk. It makes good sense to choose environmental and nature friendly products, when sleeping out in nature. But apart from that, fibre filing made from recycled PET bottles has a special structure that ensures you a good nights sleep out doors. Unlike traditional fibre filling the recycled filling, ThermoDry, has a hollow construction, making the filling airy and fluffy, and stagnant air is one of the best insulation materials. Quick heating The high content of air in the fibre filling also helps obtaining and distributing the heat from the body very quickly, so users avoid the unpleasant sensation of a cold sleeping bag. At the same time the air-filled filling provides better breathability, as body moisture is led away and instead of being sweaty and sticky in the morning you wake up dry and warm. In the outdoor and camping world, the choice between down and fibres in sleeping bags is an on-going discussion: down has the best heat-weight ratio and has superb breathability, whereas fibre filling is most convenient as it dries quickly, requires minimum maintenance and does not loose insulating ability when wet. ThermoDry, made from recycled PET bottles has the best from both worlds: The hollow and airfilled fibers provides the same high insulation and comfortable breathability as down and is almost as light, but with the convenience of fibre filling. Effect boosted by carbon In the sleeping bag Bering, from the Danish outdoor company Nordisk, the airy recycled filling is combined with a shell, that boosts the great properties of the fibre. The shell is made from Black Yarn ®, which is nylon and polyester wowen with microscopic carbon particles. The carbon makes the shell double active, keeping heat inside and leading moist out. This way the shell is boosting the effect of the airy filling creating a double active sleeping bag, ensuring the user comfortable heat and high breathability for optimal rest. The filling are sewn in chambers, that are offset in two layers, so thermal bridges are avoided and no cold air leak in through the stitches. The combination of nylon, polyester and carbon makes the sleeping bag very strong and easy to clean. Bering follows the scandinavian design tradition combining functions and aesthetics. “Chargeable” sleeping bag The carbon particles have several great features. As known from exhaust hoods and filters, carbon neutralises odour, so the Bering sleeping bag feels fresh for a longer time. The carbon in the fabric can convert light into heat. Therefore the Bering sleeping bag can be “charged” in light to be 3-5°C warmer than the surroundings. In combination with high air content of the filling, which distributes heat quickly, this ensures tired trekkers quick warmth and the best conditions for a good nights sleep.
