Newsletter 10th March 2017 - St Anselms Catholic Primary School

Dear Parents,
Thank you for attending Parents’ Open evenings last week and for completing the R.E. Questionnaire. If you haven’t yet
managed to return the Questionnaire, please do so within the next week. I hope that you had good dialogues with the class
teachers about your child/ren’s learning and progress.
We began our Lenten preparation on Ash Wednesday, with Mass for Years 2-6, while the children in Years R&1 received
ashes and a blessing. Classes from Year 1-6 are taking turns to attend church each Friday afternoon for Stations of the
Cross which are being led by Pupil Chaplains. Parents are welcome to attend these services.
We are holding an R.E. Open Afternoon on Friday 31 March at 2.45pm. This session will open with prayer and will
continue with the children talking to their parents about their R.E. work in their R.E. books. We hope that many parents will
be able to attend.
Assemblies - Yesterday, Class Ash confidently presented a wonderful Assembly to their parents and the children in EYFS
and KS1, on their topic ‘People Who Help Us’.
th
Staff - Mrs Collyer will commence her maternity leave on Friday 17 March. We wish her all the very best for the birth of her
baby and look forward to hearing her joyful news! Miss Fitzgerald will be teaching class 2 Elm fulltime. We welcome back
Mrs Marotta who has been appointed Assistant Headteacher for the duration of Mrs Collyer’s maternity leave.
Sporting Achievements – Swimming- Last week, children from year 4, 5, and 6 competed against 16 other schools in the
Harrow Schools Swimming Gala. We congratulate the following children who won medals: Amina Byron Nour- Gold
(Yr5/6 Girls Breast Stroke), Eve Colson - Silver (Yr5/6 Girls Backstroke) and Oliver Macgonigal - Silver (yr 5/6 Boys
Freestyle). Our Relay teams also won Gold in the Yr 5/6 200m Medley Relay and Silver in the Yr 3-6 Freestyle relay ( Oliver
Macgonigal, Beatrice Jeffs, Charlie Nevett, Amina Byron Nour, Charlie Harrington, Freya Ruane, Oliver Dziedzic, Aaron
Nour, Erin O’Connor, Amelie Stasiowska, Eve Colson.) Well done to all the children who took part.
Saints Schools Gym Competition – Last Thursday, the children performed against 60 other children from the Saints
schools performing a challenging routine accurately and with great grace and control. Our team was fourth overall and there
were some super individual performances, particularly Hanna Woolford who narrowly missed out on a medal. Well done to
all the children who had worked hard with Mr Richards to master the routine.
Cross Country - St Anselm’s gave a great team performance in the Harrow Schools Cross Country this week. Our year 6
boys came second and our year 5 boys and year 6 girls teams came third. Best individual performances came from Oliver
MacGonigal who got the silver medal and Hannah Cooper who was sixth. However, many of our children took places in the
top twenty which was a real achievement in very muddy and challenging conditions: Shannon Forde, Sophie Peck, Helena
Steglinksa, Beatrice Jeffs, Michael Wilson, Siavash Fritz Beckronpour and William Jackson. Well done to all 37 children
who took part and completed the course which showed Great Spirit. Thanks also to the parents who came to support the
children and to those who washed the muddy kit!

Extra-Curricular Activities – World Book Day - We had a wonderful day last Thursday, 2 March with the children and
staff dressing up as their favourite Roald Dahl characters! As a follow up, this week the children in Year 3-6 attended
Roald Dahl workshops which were a great success as evidenced by the children’s views, “I enjoyed participating in the
Roald Dahl workshop because it helped me to discover the techniques that Roald Dahl used to write his books. Now, I am
looking forward to including these techniques in my own writing” (Elliott Pryce, 5 Rowan).
“My favourite part of the Roald Dahl workshop was when we had to dramatise a story and use lots of exaggerated acting to
make it exciting and engaging for the audience” (Erin Boyle, 5 Rowan).
It was also very rewarding to receive the following feedback from the drama teacher, “Just to say, what a
wonderful school you have! Thank you so much for having us there and I thoroughly enjoyed your children and
the atmosphere in the school so thank you and great work”.
Choir Showcase – on Monday evening, St Anselm’s choir gave an exceptional performance at the Harrow Schools’
Showcase at the Harrow Arts Centre.
Safety on the Playground –The playground is very busy at the end of the school day. Therefore in the interest of keeping
every safe please ensure that children do not ride their scooters or bicycles on the playground.
Safeguarding – The person responsible for Safeguarding including Child Protection at St Anselm’s, is the Head Teacher,
Mrs Monahan. In her absence, Mrs O’Connell has this responsibility. The governor with responsibility for Safeguarding is
Lynsay Shaw, Chair of Governors.
It has come to the attention of class teachers that children are putting themselves at risk by allowing strangers to join
in their X-box and other online games. I urge you please to be vigilant of your child’s online activity.
