DirecteD By Martin LyngBo
written By Martin LyngBo anD thor Bjorn kreBs
rom the creator of the hugely popular The Tailor
of Inverness.
Dogstar is delighted to be working with one of
Scandinavia’s most innovative and popular
independent theatre companies, Mungo Park Arts
Centre of Copenhagen, to bring a highly entertaining
and epic adventure story to audiences – the story of
the Scottish explorer Mungo Park.
In 1795 and 1805, Park led two expeditions to West
Africa to chart the River Niger and investigate tales of
vast gold wealth. Park died on the 2nd expedition,
along with nearly all of his party, but his journal of the
expedition survived. The play is a tragi-comic retelling
of the story with the 18th century figure of Park
interacting with two young men from today. As the
story moves towards its latter stages – the folly of
Park’s project – its development into an ever more
crazy and violent colonial adventure is exposed.
Rip-roaring entertainment and a salutary story!

Beatrix Potter’s Scotland
with Lynne McGeachie
eatrix Potter's scotLanD, a talk on the book of the same
name by author Lynne Mcgeachie, provides an excellent insight
into the life of one of Britain’s best-loved writers. Based around Potter’s
Journal, written in a code only cracked 14 years after she died, the book
goes into detail about her upbringing and influences.
Beatrix Potter is automatically associated with the English Lake District –
it was, however, a different place that first inspired her imagination: the
beautiful countryside of Highland Perthshire. Spending every childhood
summer for 11 years at Dalguise House near Dunkeld, Beatrix Potter fell
deeply in love with Scotland.
Discover the real facts about Beatrix Potter with Lynne McGeachie, a
member of The Beatrix Potter Society for many years, and translator of
The Tale of Peter Rabbit into Scots.
Lynne is kindly donating this talk in aid of Birnam Arts fundraising efforts.
Signed copies of Lynne’s books will be on sale after the event.
B
Concise, elegant and intriguing, this sliver of literary
history shows – perhaps for the first time – the full extent of the place
Scotland played in shaping the imagination of Beatrix Potter.

A phenomenal band giving stunning performances in live settings, they’ve played at
national festivals, including Glastonbury, at which they were winners of the coveted New

the band are no strangers to the Scottish shores – they recorded their second album in

Tales of Don Roberto
with jaMie jauncey
Writer jamie jauncey grew up with stories from the extraordinary life of his
flamboyant great-grand-uncle, RB Cunninghame Graham (1852-1936) – famously
known as Don roBerto – but who really was ‘Don Roberto’,
and what was it like to have such a figure as part of the
family backdrop?
Jamie’s fascinating talk will uncover the many aspects of
Graham’s life... he was a landed aristocrat – with a claim to
the Scottish throne, no less – the UK’s first ever socialist MP
and founding president of the SNP, a prolific author, an
inveterate adventurer, a superb horseman – hence the
sobriquet Don Roberto. An eternal champion of the underdog
and oppressed, he was held to ransom by a sheik, jailed as an MP
for rioting on Blood Sunday in 1887... the list goes on and on! But, above all, his story
is one of someone who stood tall for humanity in all his endeavours.
Jamie has kindly donated his time for this talk towards Birnam Arts’ fundraising efforts.

Inspector Hound
ritten by Tom Stoppard back in 196, the reaL insPector hounD hilariously
parodies the stereotypical Agatha Christie whodunnit.
Feuding theatre critics, Moon, a fusty philanderer, and Birdfoot, a pompous and
vindictive second-string critic, are swept into the whodunnit play they are reviewing.
In the spoof Agatha Christie-like melodramas which ensue on the lavish set of
Muldoon Manor, the body under the sofa proves to be the top critic who was meant to
review the play that Moon was brought in to replace. In good old whodunnit style, all the
characters are kept within the house, unable to leave, and all know the murderer is
present amongst them.
As mists rise above the isolated Muldoon Manor, Moon and Birdfoot become dangerously
implicated in the lethal activities of an escaped madman... but who is the murderer?!
