Year 3/4 We have continued learning about the Egyptians this half term. We have explored mummification and actually had the chance to mummify our own Pharaoh. He is now bandaged up and ready for his after life! We have written Telephone: 0114know 239 6711 instructions so others how to do Email: this too. We have been busy designing bread for the Pharaoh's banquet and we have chosen new ingredients through taste testing. There are some interesting combinations to add to the bread basil and cumin, honey and garlic! We are looking forward to eating it and seeing what we think about it. The Pharaoh has also had a problem as he has wanted some more information to stop his butter from melting (which is needed for the bread). The children have found out the melting point of butter and made suggestions of places to put it or how to store it! We have enjoyed our adventure into Ancient Egypt but now it is time to move on. Year 5/6 With the eagerly anticipated build up to this summer's Olympic Games in Brazil, Year 5/6 have been looking at the global issue currently facing South America: Zika. We have looked into the virus and its transmitter - the Aedes Mosquito. Using Darwin's 'Survival of the fittest' theory and our knowledge of Adaptation, Evolution and the Physical Geography of South America within the World's climate: we have explored the poignant question - Is the UK under threat from Zika? Diary Dates 4th April 15th April 9th May 25th May Back to school Y6 Science, Music and revolution KS2 SATs week begins Last day of term Sports Our eldest girls have been super successful this half term. They entered a fantastic cheerleading sequence into a citywide competition and performed brilliantly! The girls football team also triumphed at a local tournament, beating Valley [email protected] Park and suffering a narrow defeat to Arbourthorne. Amongst the PE being taught across school, cycling has been taking place in Y6, Y3/4 have tried their hand at orienteering and children in the foundation have been taking part in some country dancing. The term will culminate in a celebration of sport through Sports Relief. Thanks to everyone who has taken part and donated. We hope to have raised a fantastic amount for a very worthy cause. Forest school What a wet half-term it has been at Forest School. We have had to cope with rain, water logged and muddy ground and some freezing temperatures. However, the children have still managed to enjoy themselves in the outdoors. We have been using tools this half-term. Most children have used a pair of loppers or secateurs to size wood to the needed length. The younger children have made Magic Wands and enjoyed turning the adults into many different creatures. Luckily they did kindly return us to human in the end. The older children having been making structures, such as the Year 6 group who made two willow fences. There has also been enough dry spells to make fires safely and use the fire to make our own charcoal. It has taken longer than we thought to become successful at making it. Some of the children will be using the fire to cook something with a little European flavour! We are all looking forward to the warmer weather of Spring! Well done to the 14 playground monitors who have lead, organised and managed playtime activities for the key stage one children this half term. They enjoyed a visit to ice Sheffield as a big well done! Spring 2 2016 Telephone: 0114 239 6711 Email: [email protected] Attendance so far this year is 94.9%. Please remember school starts at 8:50. Regular and punctual attendance is vital if children are to be happy, settled and successful at school. Our school topic this term has been ‘Location, location, location,’ read on to find what all the classes have been learning about. Foundation Stage 2 Foundation Stage 1 It has been another fun filled term for learning in FS1 this term. We have been reading 'The little red hen' and enjoyed finding out all about bread. The children have explored how flour is made, tasted bread from around the world and have even baked their own bread. The children have also used puppets and props to retell the story and make up their own stories. This half term in FS2 we have been enjoying having shark and chips in our cafe and nursing wild animals back to health in our jungle hospital. We have been developing our sentence writing this half term and we are getting very good at remembering our capital letters and full stops! In our PE sessions we have enjoyed country dancing and listening to a range of musical styles. Year 1 This half term we have continued to find out more about planet Earth through our ‘Location, Location, Location’ topic. We got our passports, packed our bags and set off for Antarctica – the ‘frozen’ continent – with the snail and the whale. When we arrived we visited lots of places, including a volcanic island called Deception Island, where we saw waddling Adelie penguins! We went to the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf and conducted a scientific experiment about melting ice. Finally we trekked to the South Pole and wrote all about our adventures. You can read our super writing in our Creative Curriculum books. We have been very busy developing lots of new skills in maths too, including telling the time, measuring mass and partitioning 2-digit numbers. We have been observing and measuring the weather in Science, and we're looking forward to some more outdoor learning when the temperature rises a bit! Year 2 This half term we enjoyed a trip to the butterfly house. We saw lots of beautiful butterflies that come from tropical rainforests. We also enjoyed seeing the Ringtailed lemurs. The lemurs jumped onto our heads! Since returning from the butterfly house we have created information leaflets about ring-tailed lemurs as well as some lovely artwork.
