Bay Haven remains committed to smoke

February 2016 newsletter
Bay Haven remains committed to
smoke-free grounds
Bay Haven is committed to providing a smoke-free,
safe and healthy workplace. The recent introduction
of electronic smoking products (e-cigarettes, vaping)
has prompted Bay Haven’s Health and Safety
Committee to research these items and revise the
policy to prohibit the use of these smoking products
on Bay Haven property.
Be advised that Bay Haven has declared all buildings,
offices and properties owned or leased by the
company to be tobacco and
electronic smoking product free
areas . All employees, visitors,
suppliers and contractors are only
to use tobacco smoking products
and electronic smoking products in the outdoor
Designated Smoking Area.
Complaints regarding non-compliance with this policy
shall be directed to a manager for follow up. Let’s all
share the responsibility of adhering to this policy and
promoting a smoke free work environment for
everyone.
Employee Recognition Award
Congratulations to Sarah Sherman,
Activation Coordinator Assistant (ACA),
for being the most recent recipient of
the Employee
Recognition Award.
Presented each
quarter, the Award
recognizes an
individual staff
member who was nominated
for their dedication to providing
quality services to our residents.
Award winners are determined by the
nominated individual’s participation in
staff development programs, number of
sick days missed as well as years of
service. Those presented with the
Award are given a cheque for $25, a
certificate of recognition as well as
the coveted parking spot out in front
of the Nursing Home. Sarah has been
working at Bay Haven for just over 3
years, presenting quality programs to
our residents in the Nursing and
Retirement Homes. When not working at
Bay Haven, Sarah works other part-time
jobs at Cineplex in Collingwood and as
a Pool Attendant during the summer
months. Sarah is also an avid Silks
performer with the Collingwood Circus
Club. Congratulations to our other
nominated staff this quarter: Cook Dan
Govan and ACA Paula Smith.
Tulips for parkinson’s campaign
The Nursing Home Resident’s Council is once again
preparing to host a Tulips for Parkinson’s campaign.
The tulip is used by Parkinson Canada as a symbol of
hope for those living with Parkinson’s disease and is
sold in an effort to raise money for research,
advocacy and education to find a cure for the
neurodegenerative disease.
Over the last two years, the Resident’s
Council has sold bunches of tulips, potted
tulips and decorative vases in an effort to
raise money for Parkinson Canada,
collecting almost $750! This year, the
Council will be selling bunches of tulips (8
blooms in a bunch) for $10, potted tulip plants for
$10 and decorative vases for $6. If you are interested
in purchasing some tulips, please see Lisa in the
Activity Office. Orders must be placed by February
26, 2016. Cash only, please. Tulips will be delivered
on April 26, 2016 for pick up.
Bay Haven Staff are brushing up on
their education!
Bay Haven’s staff continue to participate in
monthly educational in-services and training to
remain current with the requirements of the Long
Term Care Homes Act and the Retirement
Homes Act. Over the next month, Nursing Home
staff will be receiving training on Gentle
Persuasion Techniques in an effort to respond
appropriately to residents with behavioural
needs. Training online for staff will also include
review of Bay Haven’s Zero Tolerance for Abuse
policy, proper handwashing techniques and Best
Cleaning Practices. Well done!
