Summer vacations are near, and even though kids will have some respite from the scorching
heat, parents would already have started thinking of how to keep the kids “happily busy” at
home all these days. During their vacations children will usually have plenty of hours to do
just-nothing and they wouldn’t know how to spend their days. So, apart from the internet
and TV of course, what can we do to make the vacation an enjoyable and memorable one
for our children, along with meeting the demands of our own busy and hectic schedule?
Kindly note the following points:

The assignment has to be done roll no. wise.
This Assignment would be assessed for Formative 1.
Please try and do the work neatly and in an organized manner.

English
Your holiday homework this year is a fun mix of all the aspects of the language. It has been
designed to ensure that you enjoy and learn at the same time.
1. Read Mark Twain’s famous book ‘Tom Sawyer’.
Read the first 10 chapters and write the summary in 250 words.
Write the bio-sketch of the characters-Tom, Huck
Choose 20 difficult words and make sentences from those words.
Find 10 words and write their synonyms, antonyms and homophones.
Present your work creatively.
2. NEWSPAPER READING
You must read the newspaper daily. It will broaden your outlook and develop your language
skills.
a. Find meanings of 5 new words daily for two weeks.
b. Be a journalist and write about your imaginary meeting with any famous
Actor/actress/politician/author.
c. Solve 5 crossword puzzles from the newspaper and paste it.
d. Choose one picture from the sports section and write a picture based composition on it.
e. Make a word chain of 50 words.The last two letters of the word should be from the first two
letters of the next word. For example-Metal-Almost Stranger Eruption….and so on. You
should not use any 3 or 4 lettered words.
3. Creative Writing (100-125words)
To improve learners thinking and writing skills.
1. All the sea creatures and fish have come to complain about what humans have done to the
sea. What might they threaten to do if we did not mend our ways?
2. What is the one gadget that you could not live without? Explain.

1. Making a periscope:
Material Required: An empty box (rectangular cardboard tube), Two small mirrors Scissors or
knife, tape, glue, Paint for decorating (optional)
Assemble the items needed. These are listed below. If using a milk container, wash the milk
carton or container thoroughly, or else it will smell. Cut off the slanted tops of each carton or
the edges of the cardboard box using scissors.
 Trace around the mirrors near the bottom of two opposite end sides of the carton or
box.
 Cut out the two traced around sections to make a "door" or "window" view-hole.
 Place the mirrors at an angle (slanted) inside the carton or box, each situated opposite
to the side of each view-hole. Tape the mirrors into place but not too tightly as you're
about to adjust them until they sit correctly. Try to make the Angle 45 degrees, because
this is the original way.
 Adjust the mirrors. Keep moving the mirrors into place until you can see out of the top
hold when you look in through the bottom hole.
 Use a hot glue gun to glue the mirrors into the exact position. Place the glue along the
edges and stick into place.
 Place a lid over the carton or box. Seal it in place with masking tape or other tape. Paint
to decorate if wished. It's now ready for use

2. Collect articles or pictures related to water scarcity from old newspapers, magazines or
internet. Paste them on a chart paper. Bring information on how water scarcity is affecting the
conditions of people in various parts of country. Share this information in the class and discuss
on it.

1. Make an interesting cardboard game on “Waste management” or “what a lot of
Waste!” Refer to the example given below.
2. Interview your family members on what they do to reduce production of garbage.
Prepare a questionnaire for your interview. Record your interview sheets in a folder.

Q1 People in ancient times use signs and symbols to describe their views. Imagine yourself to
abe a hunter gatherer of Paleolithic period and make a CAVE PAINTING using black or brown
coloured sheet to give the rock effect of the cave and using White/Red clour to paint the
figures and symbols. (Refer to page 20 of your textbook).
Q2 Constellations are a group of bright stars in the sky. Create your own imaginery
constellation and give it name. Also write its characteristic features on a A4 size sheet. Use
black A4 or A3 size sheet to represent the sky and white colour/ stickers to represent stars. Its
feature can include the following points- location, number of stars, shape, location of pole
star, etc

Q1 People of ancient times use to make maps to for the places they travelled. Imagine yourself
to be a traveller from an ancient kingdom. Make a map ‘treasure map’ of the hidden treasure
of your kingdom. Watch the videos on YouTube (or 123peppy.com) on ‘How to make a
treasure map’. Also refer to images of ‘Ancient treasure maps’ on Google Images.
Q2 Imagine you have formed a political party with a few friends. Write an ELECTION
MANIFESTO for your party. Design an election symbol. Remember that the symbol should
reflect the central thought/ principle of your party. Also give a name to your party. Present the
information on A3 size sheet like a POSTER.

Q1 Pots and clay vessels are the essentials for the people of Indus Valley Civilization. They use
to paint their pots in different geometric patterns and figures. They mainly use red and black
colours for decorating their pots. Paint a pot using the same. (Refer to page 30 of your
textbook) Also refer to images of ‘ancient pots’ on Google Images.
Q2 Galaxy is the cluster for millions of stars. Our solar system is the part of milky way galaxy.
Create your own imaginary galaxy and name it. Also write its characteristic features on A4 size
sheet. Use black A3 size sheet to represent the night sky and White colour to represent the
galaxy having stars. Its features can include the following points- location, number of stars
approximately, specialty, any planet or solar system, size, etc.
