Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain reliever (NSAID). In Australia, it is also
known as Nurofen, Advil®, Dimetapp® and iProfen® . Use this approved dosing guide to
work out the right amount of ibuprofen you need to soothe your child’s pain or fever.
PARACETAMOL OR IBUPROFEN?
Paracetamol and ibuprofen are the two most common ingredients in children’s medicines.
When taken at the right dose, either one is effective in helping to ease your child’s pain
and fever.
Ibuprofen is what is known as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain reliever (NSAID), a
class of medicines that help to relieve pain and inflammation. It is the active ingredient in
Nurofen for Children, and other products like Advil®, Dimetapp® and iProfen®.

Ibuprofen acts mainly at the site of pain by blocking the production of prostaglandins to
relieve the headache. It is not suitable for children under 3 months.
Paracetamol (sometimes called acetaminophen) is a different kind of pain reliever. It is the
active ingredient in products like Panadol®, Lemsip®, Chemist’s Own®, Febridol®, Herron®
and more. How paracetamol works is not clearly understood, although it is thought to act
mainly centrally (in the brain and nervous system). It is not suitable for children under 1
month.
