Session Four:
TRENT, VATICAN II, AND THE LITURGY IN
TENSION
Wednesday, November 6, 2013/ 7:00-8:30 pm
Globe Room, Cataldo Hall, Gonzaga University
On December 4, 1563, the Council of Trent entrusted to the pope and his curia the task of reforming the liturgical books. On
December 4, 1963, Vatican Council II set in motion a comprehensive reform and renewal of the liturgy after the bishops had
decisively rejected curial attempts to derail it. Tensions still remain between liturgical perspectives identified with the two
Councils and stand in the way of ongoing development. We will look at the key features of the reforms and their underlying
principles in an effort to understand such areas of tension as the current translation of the Mass.
Presenter
Fr. Jim Dallen, priest of the diocese of Salina, Kansas, is Emeritus Professor of Religious
Studies at Gonzaga University, where he specialized in liturgy, sacramental theology, and

reconciliation. More recently, he has written on liturgical spirituality, the consequences of
communities without Sunday Eucharist, and the ecclesiology of the new Mass translation.
