More than the sum of its parts
The SIGMATEK Control System
SIGMATEK offers its customers complete solutions for automated tasks. The optimal
combination of hard and software characterize our future-oriented control system.
All components come from a single source and they are developed and produced in
Austria by SIGMATEK. So engineering, installation and software development costs
are minimized.
The same contact person can be contacted for all kind of questions.
Competent help and a integrated system result in low ownership
costs. The most technical demands are met with high performance
capability in a compact design and the highest level of quality. The object oriented programming tool, LASAL, allows application and visualization projects to be developed quickly and
easily. The Ethernet based VARAN bus provides optimal communication in hard real time. Faster “time to market” with higher
software quality and reusability of the software lead to lower costs.
Technology to Meet Your Challenges from Today and Tomorrow
More than 1800 standard products guarantee the ideal solution to
meet any customer demand. By combining them individually, each
customer receives a unique solution. During development, great value
was placed on scalable performance, modular expandability and an
optimal price/performance ratio. Development costs are therefore
reduced.
Partnership and Quality
The long-term partnership with our customers bring synergies for both
sides. The right solution can be provided much faster, if one knows the
history, target groups and special requirements of the customers and
if partnership is fostered.

Open to the Outside World
Although SIGMATEK offers complete control solutions, this is not
equivalent to a proprietary separation. Our systems are open for
communication participants and systems from other manufacturers.
Integration in existing systems or expansions are possible without
problems.
Hot Plug In
The system participants can be added or removed during operation
without having to interrupt the entire application. For this, no
project software is required, ensuring the simple exchange of
components. If a participant is identified as “critical” for operation,
the application stops if the component fails or is removed. The machine does not have to be shut down for simple maintenance
purposes and production stops are avoided, which is a significant cost
advantage!
Isochronous Bus Operation
One of the features of the SIGMATEK control system is its isochronicity.
With the practically jitter-free data transfer using open VARAN real
time Ethernet technology, the performance is improved significantly
and the quality is therefore raised. Intelligent data transfer guarantees
highest degree of security and significant increase in performance. This
raises the capability and output of your machine, providing a unique
advantage over your competitors as well as a selling point for your
customers!
Your Advantages
In machine and plant building, it is important to offer your customers high quality
products for the best price possible. Several competitors are fighting for their

Motion Control
SIGMATEK’s motion control system offers complete drive solutions: motors, drives
and software interact seamlessly and are fully integrated into the SIGMATEK
control systems. This complete solution generates several advantages: highly
dynamic, economic and reliable servo applications, flexibility and a minimal space
requirement due to the compact design.
Programming/Parameterization and operation are
simplified by the consistency of the system and the
integration of the start-up and parameterization
software into the object-oriented project tool
LASAL. No additional software is required and
the time needed for the initial operation start is
reduced significantly.
Combined with the LASAL MOTION software
package, the connection of virtual lead axles as
well as the creation and execution of profiles
and the coupling of several axles is possible.
Applications ranging from flying saws to
unconventional special applications can also be
run.
Parameter sets and configuration data for the
drives as well as for all motors are already stored
in the control system. The user only needs to
customize the user-specific data, minimizing the
possibility of errors during the initial start-up.
The servo amplifier can also be activated without
an additional software tool.
19
DIAS-Drive Series 300
The DIAS 300 drive series cover a broad spectrum in the low and middle
power range. Up to three axles are combined in one housing, thus
saving space in the control cabinet. Excellent server properties as well as a high coefficient and low heat
generation despite its compact form are the most convincing arguments
for using these drives. The functions are deliberately limited to current,
rotation speed and position control to avoid unnecessary overhead and
provide an optimal price/performance ratio.
Servo Motors
SIGMATEK motors are permanently energized and brushless synchronous servo motors, equipped with rare-earth magnets (Nd-Fe-B). With
their high power density, optimal overload capability and rotation
speed dynamic in a compact design, these motors are well suited for
highly dynamic applications.

The Ethernet based, hard
real time capable VARAN
bus impresses with its high
speed, short cycle times,
minimum synchronicity jitter
and high data security.
VARAN operates according
to the manager/client principle; collisions are
avoided through its event-controlled operating
mode.Theentirebusistreatedasa4GBmemory

Structure
Tree, star and linear structures can be used when
building a VARAN network. VARAN splitter modules
serve as distributors with star and tree structures.
Several VARAN systems can be cascaded in a
common synchronized network using a special
splitter module. A multi manager structure is
then produced, in which several machines can
be easily networked in synchronous real time.

DIAS-Bus
In addition to the Ethernet based VARAN bus,
the DIAS bus serves as the system bus within
the SIGMATEK control system. A data rate of
11MBd guarantees an update of 2.5 million
I/Os per second and an access time for one byte
of 3.24 µs.
Positioning tasks and fast analog value processing
without local intelligence in the module are
therefore possible. This complete solution
guarantees a high data transfer speed and
reduces the total costs, since no additional
nodes are required.
Like the VARAN bus, the DIAS bus is also based
on the manager/client principle. The entire
communication process between the bus stations
is automatically realized in the hardware. With
this method, no software is needed to configure
the system.
DIAS-Bus Highlights
■ Universal application: All stations in the automation concept are connected, both local and decentralized
■ Continuity: No additional bus nodes required
■ Real time communication: With synchronization without jitter
■ No software required: The bus is triggered in the hardware
■ Automatic error detection: Security circuits integrated in the I/O module
■ Interrupt capable: Reacts to decentralized interrupts in real time
■ Bus communication independent of the control program: CPU is not burdened with communication
■ Various data transfer media: Fiber optic as well as electrical data transmission is possible
23
Structure
The DIAS bus structure can be configured in a
tree, star or linear form. The DIAS bus can be
networked in three different configurations:
decentralized, local or a combination of the two.
For the performance of the DIAS bus it is not
important whether the modules are placed next to
each other mechanically or physically separated.
Data Transfer and Connection Technology
The DIAS bus can transfer data over various
media:
■ Ribbon cable for ≤ 6.5 m
■ Double twisted-pair wires (segment length)
for ≤ 20 m
■ Fiber optic cable (segment length) to ≤ 300 m
The achieved data rate is independent of
the connection line used. For decentralized
configurations, there is no performance loss. To keep connection costs low, standard connectors
are used.
Combining VARAN and DIAS
In addition to complete VARAN and DIAS networks,
it is also possible to combine both bus systems.
In such a case, the DIAS bus serves as the local
module bus, while VARAN acts as the industrial
Ethernet field bus. When using this combination
the performance is affected in no way; optimal
control properties are guaranteed.
Other Bus Systems
The SIGMATEK DIAS bus and the open VARAN bus
system can also communicate with other bus
systems. Ethernet TCP/IP, CAN, Profibus, etc.
are integrated in numerous components. These
interfaces ensure the external openness and thus
the compatibility with components and systems
from other manufacturers.
24
