Introduction This is a studio class in Screen Printing. Its emphasis will be on traditional as well as modern screen printing processes and techniques. It will also be introducing both artistic and commercial aspects of this medium. This class will involve both in class and out of class studio work. Screen Printing is most likely one of the oldest forms of printmaking. Archaeologist have found evidence (thousands of years old) in China of silk being used to create stencils to repeat patterns by pushing dyes and or pigments through the fabric. Screen printing today is not much different, although we no longer use Silk the process is not that much different today. Course Objectives ● Become knowledgeable and proficient with screenprinting and it processes, techniques, supplies and its history. ● Use the medium of screenprinting in the conception and execution of original works of art. ● Become proficient and knowledgeable of stencil creation in both hand cut and digital forms. ● Become proficient in the use of the print shop, its tools, equipment, its etiquette, and its safety. ● Become proficient in color mixing and beginning levels of color theory with water based inks. ● Become proficient in screen setup, screen maintenance, and stencil removal. ● Become proficient in edition and mono printing techniques. ● Become knowledgeable of basic printmaking vocabulary and start implementing its use. ● Become proficient in the creation of bitmaps, halftones and digital techniques in stencil creation. ● ● ● Become proficient in applying and using water based photo emulsion Use one's creativity abilities to create a dynamic portfolio of prints. Participate in weekly critiques in a creative way using critical thinking skills and a proper visual vocabulary. Learning Outcomes To successfully complete this class you must demonstrate one's proficiency in each of the course objectives. Upon successful completion of this course students will have: ● show engagement in class through daily work habits ● demonstrate ability to set up and take down print stations. ● demonstrate ability to properly reclaim screens. ● demonstrate ability to make and print a cut stencil. ● demonstrate ability to make bitmap and bitmap films. ● demonstrate ability to coat photo emulsion on screen and properly expose it. ● produce prints that show a conceptual and visual understanding of demonstrations. ● additional work on projects outside of class time ● shown a rigor in craftsmanship of ideas and screen printing ● attendance of each class and demonstration ● turned in complete weekly printing assignments ● turned in completed final portfolio ● participated in discussions and class critiques ● respect and thoughtfulness as it pertains to maintaining a clean print shop. ● participated in final clean up. Once these skills are acquired students will have the basic understanding of screen printing, its uses and its techniques and will be trained in the use of the print shop and its equipment. Method of Presentation This class is a studio class. In class demonstrations and lectures of techniques, processes, and history will be given at the beginning of each class period. Once demonstrations and lectures have been given, students will be required to model each days lecture in the form of a project geared toward that technique. Attendance This is a 2 credit studio quad class and it is imperative that you attend class. Missed classes will directly affect your grade and your prints. Two missed class periods will result in a one letter grade deduction. Each class will begin with a demonstration, missing demonstrations will have a direct correlation on your understanding and ability to carry out the objectives of your assignments. If you have to miss a class, be prepared to get notes and instruction from one of your classmates. Grade All work must be completed and turned in to pass this course. There will be weekly assignments, two independent print projects and a final. A letter grade will be assigned to each of these projects and grades will be determined by whether objectives of the assignment were met in each. You will be graded on both your knowledge and proficiency in your abilities to show your understanding of each assignment, as well as the aesthetic and creative decisions made on your prints and images. Complete Assignments and Final Portfolio will be evaluated and assessed as follows: ● completion of the all assignments as detailed in demonstrations and lectures. ● demonstration of quality, creativity and commitment to the assignment. ● development of conceptual and creative problem solving as it relates to ones ideas. ● mastery and execution in synthesizing ones creative ideas with proposed techniques. ● neat and orderly presentation of ones portfolio. Letter grades will be assigned to weekly assignments, projects and final portfolio. A, A = Exceptional accomplishment, outstanding performance with special initiative and competence. B+, B, B = Superior and above average performance, student pursues goals with effort and success. C+, C, C = Required work, adequate performance, average competence, work completed. D+, D, D = Inferior effort, marginal outcome, less than required involvement to develop goals. F = Failure to complete or submit the assignments. Attendance The course is structured around a series of lectures, demonstrations, critiques and studio production with a mandatory attendance policy. Absences in excess of two will result in a final grade reduction. If an absence is unavoidable, students should inform the instructor in writing before class. Projects 1st project: Stencil Making, Film Processing, Screen Processing, Reclaiming. Color Mixing, Registration and Edition Printing. 2nd project: Image creation with traditional and digital tools. How to make a 56 color print using both color separation via Photoshop and Illustrator and hand cut stencils. Final project: Create a finished print with and edition of at least 10 prints on good paper. One must utilize a range of techniques and knowledge acquired from the first two projects.
