YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE
WE SAY
With the races just gone at
Tauherenikau it is appropriate
that we mark the beginning of a
race of another kind. With four
top contenders already signalling
their intention to run, this year’s
contest for the Wairarapa seat in
the general election promises to
be a beauty.
The incumbent, Alastair Scott
of National, has got to rate his
chances to retain the seat, but he
is going to get some fierce
competition from New Zealand
First’s Ron Mark, Labour’s
Kieran McAnulty and the Greens’
John Hart.
Mark’s natural savvy, his
strong connection with
Wairarapa and his political
pugnacity will bring issues to the
fore and fire up the debate.
McAnulty is a candidate that has
done some hard yards even
though he has never been in
parliament and Hart has also
stuck to his guns locally. Scott is a
known quantity and Wairarapa
people are in a good position to
make a judgement on whether he
deserves to keep his job.

Fence erected
to ward off
store dumpers
ILLYA MCLELLAN AND
JARED NICOLL
Masterton’s Salvation Army has
had to put up a steel fence to stop
people stealing donated items, and
dumping rubbish outside their
family store.
At one point after Christmas,
the charity had to spend $500 in a
single day on dump fees to get rid
of rubbish that had been left
strewn outside the store.
‘‘It was a terrible mess, stuff
was everywhere and it took three
separate trips to the dump with
the van to get rid of it all,’’ said
Marilyn McRae, who has recently
taken over running Salvation
Army operations in the area with
husband Peter.
Peter McRae said they regretted having to resort a fence, as
they did not want to make it difficult for people who genuinely
want to support the organisation
but the situation was ’’getting ridiculous’’.

the fence up for a trial period. It

‘‘We had noticed that people
have been rifling through goods,
taking what they like, and in the
process making a terrible mess
which then has to be cleaned up
and dumped.
‘‘We need ongoing support and
want to make clear to people that
we are happy to collect goods from
their homes, even if it is just a bag

helps.’’
It was a real shame for those

Wellington Regional Family

said dealing with rubbish was

‘‘We’re absolutely grateful to
all our donors for their generosity, but we do ask people to help
us and make sure their stuff can

Brent Goodwin - Masterton District Council
A passion for
the outdoors
Today we start a
series looking at the
secret lives of the
region’s councillors.
Jack Barlow goes
behind the council
chambers.
When he was a kid, Brent
Goodwin wasn’t particularly
enthralled by the outdoors.
Though he spent a bit of time
roaming the hills around his
hometown of Nelson, it was the
quieter, less taxing world of
literature that pulled him in.
Still, years before it was fully
realised, his interest in nature
was piqued when he stumbled
upon English writer Eric Newby’s
1958 epic, A Short Walk in the
Hindu Kush. Newby’s account of
his adventures around the
Nuristan mountains of
Afghanistan resonated, with its
adventures, sweeping vistas and
oddball characters.
‘‘I’ll never forget the closing
line of the book,’’ Goodwin said
with a laugh. ‘‘It was one of the
best endings ever: hard-bitten
explorer Wilfred Thesiger telling
the protagonists ’God, you must
be a couple of pansies’.’’
The sense of adventure always
stayed with him. Years later,
when an opportunity arose to go
tramping with a bunch of friends,
he went for it.
‘‘They were called the ‘lost
boys’,’’ he recalled. ’’They’d
pushed their luck a bit too far on a
tramp over the Tararuas, and
ended up having to huddle down
and spend a night of extreme
discomfort while they fought off
hypothermia.
‘‘When they finally made it
back to safety, one of them vowed
to never tramp with the group.
And that’s when they called me.’’
He took a shine to it
immediately. In the years since
he’s racked up a stack of New
Zealand’s Great Walks, some with
the group and some without.
‘‘We went down the
Whanganui River in Indian
canoes,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve walked
over Tongariro and slept in the
southern crater, been over the
Routeburn, done the Heaphy
Track with my son.’’
Masterton councillor Brent Goodwin, seen here near Molesworth Station, enjoys a taste of the outdoors.
PHOTO: MARTY SHARPE/FAIRFAX NZ
Last year he added to his Great
Walks tally with the Milford
Track. This year he’ll be heading
even further south and spending
three nights on Stewart Island, for
what promises to be a muddy trip
through the island’s rugged
interior.
For Goodwin, it’s a sense of
adventure and the promise of
natural beauty that draws him in.
‘‘There’s something about
walking along with your life on
your back, sweating away. You
get to see amazing places and you
always feel great when you come
out.
‘‘It’s fantastic.’’

New Makoura house on the way
JACK BARLOW
The technology room at Makoura
College is littered with the tools of
the trade: jagged saws, odd blocks
of wood, hastily drawn up plans.
For the past seven years, it’s
here that Makoura’s technology
students have gotten together and
begun building a house of their
own. Often, it’s the final step
before heading into careers as
tradespeople.
This year, the design is slightly
different. To save on costs they’ll
be building the house in modules,
like pieces of a puzzle designed to
slot together. Each piece can be
easily shifted on the back of a
truck, saving thousands of
dollars.
‘‘As it stands, it’s a twobedroom open-plan cottage,’’ technology teacher Bill Taylor said.
‘‘It’s a popular thing to do. This
year we’ve got 19 students in the
class, whereas we’d usually have
around 10. The kids saw last
year’s build and figured they’d get
involved.’’
Taylor said the project was
initially started to give students
better training.
Previously they’d been sent on
work-experience placements to
building sites, only to end up
doing menial jobs.
‘‘We figured we could do a better job,’’ he said.
This year’s house will be ready
by October.
In the past the programme has
been a success, with most
students working on the house
ending up either in the construction industry or a related field.
‘‘Out of last year’s class, six of
nine students ended up getting
apprenticeships,’’ Taylor said.
‘‘It’s a good time to get into the
trades. At the moment people are
crying out for builders.’’
The house isn’t a moneymaking exercise.
The costs are initially covered
by building suppliers Tumu, who
are reimbursed when the house is
sold upon completion.

Occasionally there’s a small
profit, but if that happens the
money is put back into essential
supplies for the school’s tech
classes.
This year, Taylor is hoping the
house will sell before it’s completed.
‘‘We’re looking for a buyer
before we start, because then we
can tailor it better,’’ he said.
‘‘Once it’s bought, the rest of it
(installation) can pretty much be
done by a handyman.

Wings with the air force has created

involved over the years and we look forward to more of the same.’’
She said a three-day pass for Wings
this year includes free entry to the Air
Force Ohakea air show.
Gasson said the tribute to the historical 14th squadron that is taking place as a
part of the festival is all the more meaningful with members of the current 14th
squadron at the event to see it performed
live.
The Black Falcons will perform a
group display on Saturday and Sunday
and there will also be a solo display by
another Ohakea-based air force pilot on
both days of the biennial air show.

Wairarapa will soon witness five mechanical birds of prey wheeling, diving and
swooping overhead when the Black
Falcons take to the sky.
Visitors to this year’s Wings over
Wairarapa air show will witness the
debut international performance by New
Zealand’s newest aerobatic display team.
Ohakea base commander Group Captain Nick Olney said the Black Falcons
were really keen to get the display season
under way and take to the skies to show
their stuff.
‘‘Reforming the aerobatic team after
the disbanding of the Red Checkers was a
great milestone,’’ Olney said.
‘‘The display work is in addition to
their day job, so it’s really good to see
how they demonstrate the skill and pro-
fessionalism involved in our training
programmes.
‘‘RNZAF is looking forward to contributing to Wings as part of the ongoing
relationship the air force have with the
festival and hope that people will take the
opportunity to visit the Ohakea air tattoo
which takes place a week later.’’
The 14th Squadron Black Falcons fly
the T-6C Texan II, a two-seater military
trainer built in the United States. The
planes are primarily used for flight training at Ohakea air force base, but a fivepilot team also takes part in air shows
around New Zealand.
Wings event manager Jenny Gasson
said the festival is extremely fortunate to
have the Black Falcons coming and that
it shows that the relationship between
Wings and RNZAF is as strong as ever.

Family fun at
racing festival
Locals and holidaymakers thronged to the
Interislander Summer Festival at the Tauherenikau
Racecourse on Waitangi Day.
The Festival has become a favourite event for
Kiwis across the country over the past 11 years.
‘‘The Interislander Summer Festival is the perfect
opportunity for families and friends to spend some
time together in a relaxed atmosphere. Racegoers
were able to unwind in the balmy summer weather,’’
said Wairarapa Racing Club spokesperson Matthew
Sherry.
‘‘We’re thrilled that so many people came out to
enjoy our fantastic entertainment for young and old
and the odd flutter on their favourite horse. The car
parks were packed to the brim, and the crowd was full
of energy,’’ Sherry said.
The Interislander Summer Festival has 36 events
this season, with holiday races at some of the
country’s most picturesque racecourses from
Ruakaka in the north, to Waikouaiti in the south.
Tauherenikau Racecourse hosted an event in the New
Year.
All-day kids entertainment kept the little ones occupied,
at the Interislander Summer Festival.

McAnulty to be Labour’s candidate
Kieran McAnulty has been confirmed as the Labour Candidate
in Wairarapa for this year’s General Election. At a meeting of local
Labour Party members in
Masterton
on
Saturday,
McAnulty was selected to represent the Party in Wairarapa for
the second time.
‘‘I’m excited by the opportunity
to stand for Parliament again this
year, and appreciate the support
of local members in allowing me
to do so.’’ McAnulty said.
‘‘People here want an MP who
is as passionate about Wairarapa
as they are – one who is engaged
in
the
community
and
understands our people and the
issues here. I’ll be campaigning
on that basis. A vote for me will be
a vote for someone who will
promote Wairarapa’s interests at
every possible opportunity.
People who know me know that
my passion for Wairarapa is
utterly genuine.’’ McAnulty said.
Labour Leader Andrew Little
welcomed the selection of
McAnulty.
‘‘Kieran is a true, dyed-in-thewool local and understands the
electorate well.’’
‘‘He will be a great advocate for
the area, one which has been
neglected by the government for
far too long.’’
McAnulty confirmed that he
will seek a place on the Labour
Party list this election.
‘‘Last election I did not seek a
list spot because people here
needed to know I was committed
to the region.
‘‘My family have lived in
Wairarapa for 171 years. This is
my home, and I will only ever
stand here. I think people know
that now. So after considerable
urging from people within our
Party, I have decided to seek a list
spot this year,’’ McAnulty said
The
2014
election
saw
McAnulty win the candidate vote
in
both
Featherston
and
Masterton, despite the Labour
Party polling only 25 per cent
nationwide.
‘‘All things considered we did
very well here last time. We contacted 13,000 people and won two
towns – the first time since the
Labour landslide in 2002. That’s a
great platform leading into this
election when support for the
Party is growing.’’ McAnulty said.
McAnulty said the National
government
has
neglected
regional New Zealand and he will
be campaigning on four main
issues: effective representation
for Wairarapa, policies that generate investment in rural communities, funding for health services,
education and police, and a
stronger regional economy.
Kieran McAnulty is back as the Labour
candidate.

Just another
brick in the wall
RICK LONG
The Long View
P
resident Trump wants to
build a wall - down Mexico
way. Some are comparing
it with the Berlin Wall
though that wall was to keep
people in, this one is to keep folks
out. And it isn’t really a wall;
more like a high fence in keeping
with the original, started back in
1994, but never finished.
As of January 2010 the existing
‘‘wall’’ runs from San Diego,
California to Yuma, Arizona,
there it continues into Texas and
consists of a fence 6.4 metres tall
with 1.8 metres buried in the
ground.
Mr Trump thinks that his
completed edifice will stop
‘‘criminals, drug dealers, and
rapists’’ who are pouring in from
a number of South American
destinations.
Certainly a percentage of these
people will be of the criminal
element; just about the same
percentage that occurs in most
societies.
Others will have more
legitimate reasons to risk
crossing the border. One
commentator reckons the first
thing an illegal immigrant sees
once he has reached the promised
land is a sign that says: CHEAP
LABOUR WANTED.
The minimum wage in
America is $7.25 an hour. Poor
South Americans have learnt to
live on less in their countries of
origin so they manage to survive
on whatever penurious employers
pay them and are even able to
send money back to their families
at home.
The other problem Mr Trump
observes, with some justification,
is that with the porous Mexican/
US border, drugs are flooding into
his country at an alarming rate.
The real problem then is that
Americans have an insatiable
appetite for drugs and cheap
labour.
We shouldn’t really judge a
country by the movies and
television programmes that
SUBSCRIBE
NOW
emanate from it, but you can’t
help but assume a large
percentage of the American
population smoke pot, the
southerners drink Jack Daniell’s
by the gallon and that the elite in
Los Angeles, where most of these
images are created, seem to have
no compunction about sniffing
cocaine in the most public of
places.
I’m not going to even try to
paraphrase life in the ghettos
where it seems anything goes.
Mr Trump’s stunning electoral
victory came because he appealed
to American blue-collar workers
who have seen their jobs being
exported to low wage countries
thanks to the ‘‘global economy’’
that America once championed.
But we mustn’t get too smug.
Our ‘‘wall’’ is the Tasman Sea and
the Pacific Ocean. We’ve had
factories close too, but thanks to
our temperate climate, land-based
industries have taken up the
slack.
Our wages are static and a
disturbing number of our
populous are hooked on drugs.
The evidence of p-house
production discovered after
tenants have left the building is
testament to that.
If I were Mr Trump I would set
aside the money he was going to
use to build the wall and instead
use it for more prisons.
I would then sign an executive
order to give drug dealers a
mandatory life sentence.
If the Philippines President
Rodrigo Duterte was running the
country of course he would shoot
them all.
That may just be a step too far.

A community-owned Masterton
property will get a new lease on
life with plans underway for
Wairarapa’s Maori health service, Whaiora, to relocate there.
The former Cosmopolitan
Club building on Queen Street,
owned by Masterton Trust
Lands
Trust,
will
be
redeveloped for lease to
Whaiora. The trust bought the
building, situated on trustowned land, from the club last
year to clear some of the club’s
debt.
Masterton Trust Lands Trust
chairperson, Leanne Southey,
said the trust was excited to be
working on a new opportunity
to accommodate an established
community health provider.
‘‘We are working closely with
Whaiora on a plan to adapt the
building for use by its staff and
clients.‘‘
The centrally-located site has
dual frontage onto Queen and
Dixon Streets, a 1,950 square
metre building and a large car
park.
Located at its current Park
Street premises since 2010,
Whaiora serves 3,800 enrolled
patients and 1,100 people

Whaiora chair, Teresea
Olsen, said her organisation’s
current building in Park Street
had served Whaiora well in the
past but was now at capacity
with no options for expansion.
‘‘We are now at the point
where our 41 staff need a larger
building from which to support
our growing client base.
‘‘The Queen Street property
will allow us to improve access,
privacy and parking for clients
and provide the dedicated meeting, education, whānau and
storage spaces we currently
lack. It also has room for expansion should we need it in the
future.’’
Whaiora will occupy just
over half of the Queen Street
building.
Whaiora plans to relocate
into the new premises in August
this year.

business has made a splash.
Greytown-based firm Precise
Design and Build has made its
newest venture into the swimming pool industry, just in time
for the end of summer.
Unofficially dubbed the
affordable portable container
pool its creation is the first in a
potential franchise of swimming
instalments. As the name
suggests, pools are more
affordable than an in-ground
pool, able to be transported
between locations and crafted
from shipping containers.
Their standard container
pool is 6 x 2.5 metres. The price
of the pools is not yet finalised
but will start at approximately
$33,000. Their service currently
provides for buyers in the
Wairarapa region.

and Build

Rhys Severn

The project was headed by
Rhys Severn, part owner and
manager of Precise Design and
Build.
He said although the first
pool was a very typical model, a
key selling point of the product
was its flexibility. Retractable
pool covers, salt water filters
and mood lights were some of
the features that buyers could
add to their pools
’’It’s not like buying a car
with a set design, what you see
is what you get. With these pools
it’s flexible, there are lots of
options,’’ Severn said.
First-time pool owner Jason
Lowe said he has been more
than happy with the new
addition to his Martinborough
property.
’’We love the pool, we
couldn’t justify investing in an
in ground pool but felt like this
would work great.’’

Restricted Fire Season
Announcement
Due to recent weather conditions, a restricted
fire season has been declared throughout the
Wairarapa, including all Department of
Conservation lands.
This means you need a fire permit to light any open
air fire in a rural area. This includes all braziers,
campfires, bonfires, pizza ovens, wood fired barbeques
and fireworks. Fire permits can be obtained from
the Wairarapa Rural Fire District .

Taking the long view of art
MARK AMERY
In 1963 a group of Wairarapa citizens
plotted to purchase a work [Forms in
Movement-Galliard, 1956] by my
favourite British modernist sculptor
Barbara Hepworth. They did so in
support of a proposed arts centre [that
would become Aratoi]. They wanted to
set a high standard...
If galleries aren’t collecting
contemporary work, what kind of
appreciation of art are we cultivating?
Does art increasingly come to be seen as
something for the walls of the moneyed
few? How well is art’s relevance being
couched?
Offering food for this thought: there’s
an excellent pair of collection exhibitions
at Aratoi currently. One is of little seen
landscapes from the Aratoi collection
(The Long View, until 19 March), the
other recent work from two private
collection groups (Waisculpt and Et Alia:
Two Collections Six Years, until 24
February).
In The Long View you’ll find the
Hepworth sculpture in its own small
room behind perspex, gleaming like the
giant fins and tail of a Humpback Whale
jumping out of the sea off the Kaikoura
coast.
Nearby is another Aratoi piece de
resistance, Robin White’s 12 panelled
‘Summer Grass’… Colin McCahon, Buck
Nin, Marilyn Webb, Toss Woollaston,
Bill Sutton… Susan Skerman and Juliet
Peter. It’s a terrific collection…
Meanwhile, in the Wesley Wing of
Aratoi is a fabulous bringing together of
great wee work from some of our finest
contemporary artists from the joint
collections of two art buying groups.
Were it able to be seen for longer and
wider.
Through strong curation and
collectors’ love the show sings
beautifully: an ode to the fresh
inventiveness of New Zealand’s
contemporary artists. There’s even a
work by Ray Handon that feels like the
stainless steel child of Hepworth’s copper
and bronze. You won’t see shows this
diverse and people-sized at Te Papa or
Auckland Art Gallery.
As the title of the Aratoi collection
show states, public galleries need to
collect for ‘the long view’. Local
authorities, trusts and the public
themselves need to recognise that a
culture that doesn’t collect its
contemporary art is leaving future
generations bereft of some significant
reference points in how we saw ourselves
and the world around us.

Bananas produce a gas called ethylene, which is what helps

GARDENING
Time ripe for seed harvesting
seeds naturally and there will be
few problems with storage.
Fungus can grow where seeds are
still a little damp and that can
spoil the collection.
Once the unnecessary bits and
pieces have been removed, the
clean and dry seed can be stored
in labelled jars and kept
somewhere dry and dark.
ROBERT GUYTON
against the wind or confined to
their barracks by rough weather,
they’ll likely be behind in their
production and may require help
from you in the form of
dispensation from harvesting
their honey – they might need it
all to survive. Another thing to
check is that their hive is
sheltered from the wind and no
long grass or shrubs are shading
the boxes during the day. It’s
already shady enough for them
this season, without having that
to contend with as well.
HARDEN OFF TUNNELHOUSE
SEEDLINGS
COLLECT SEEDS FROM
BIENNIAL PLANTS
Biennial vegetables and flowers
that have finished their displays
and are presenting dried seeds
can be harvested now. Parsnips,
carrots, celery, alexanders, Queen
Anne’s lace (Daucus carota) and
perennials such as parcel, lovage
and fennel all have an umbrellashaped flower structure that
makes collecting and drying out
their seeds easy.
Pick the seeds into a bowl and
bring them inside for a final
drying in the shade and out of the
wind. Aim to do this when the day
has warmed up and dried the
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR
BEEHIVES
If you keep bees, check on
them regularly to see if they’ve
been getting out often enough to
have built up a good supply of
honey for the coming cooler
seasons. If they’ve been struggling
Move seedlings out from your
tunnelhouse where they were
sown as seeds last month
and harden them off in a
sheltered space in preparation for
planting out into the open garden.
The rough conditions we’ve had
lately will pass and the
temperatures will rise to normal
levels as soon, as they say, as
school starts again! I don’t know if
that’ really true, but I hope it is, as
we’ve been very patient. If we are
blessed with a long, hot, late
summer and autumn, veges that
are planted now will catch up and
produce good crops – well,
perhaps it’s too late for sweetcorn
and pumpkins, but southern
gardeners never give up and are
ever hopeful of pleasant surprises.
Another thing to remember is to
water your outdoor seedlings as
well. Although it may seem wetter
than usual, the wind dries out soil
very quickly, so any water the
plants may have received can be
lost to the air and they won’t do
well as a result of the dryness.
GET A LITTLE SUN ON YOUR
SKIN
There’s been a lack of sunny days
this summer and, like plants,
people need sunlight too, so when
a patch of blue does appear, it
pays to drop everything and
sneak outside for a quick bask.
Productivity in plants falls when
light levels are low, and the same
thing happens with us. A cheerful
outlook makes all the difference,
and a sunny, cloudless day
certainly helps.
TIDY UP BROKEN STEMS,
FLOWERS AND BRANCHES
It’s been a remarkably blustery
season, thanks to warmer-thanusual sea temperatures over in
Australia. Climate change and the
much-heralded over-energised
atmosphere is a reality for us on
our exposed, skinny islands and
wind is what we’re getting as a
result. Plants that have had to put

up with extra pressure and more
movement than they’re usually
exposed to break, and when they
do, it’s unwise (and unattractive)
to leave them hanging or
scattered about. I’m pruning
damaged branches off some of my
more brittle native trees and
shrubs, and picking up the tall
flower spikes of the echiums that
were towering so spectacularly
until the wind flattened them to
the ground. It all makes for
excellent mulch and firewood,
though, so I have no real
complaints.

SUMMER - TAKE A SPIN
Great summer biking in Wairarapa
PIERS FULLER
The Wairarapa has a growing
range of cycle routes taking in the
region’s expansive and beautiful
rural landscape and rugged
coastlines.
CYCLE THE VINES IN
MARTINBOROUGH AND
MASTERTON
For those who enjoy a leisurely
bike ride and tasting premium
wine, then cycling the vines
around the pretty township of
Martinborough is a must-do.
Here, the roads are wide and
flat and lined either side with
vineyards, olive groves or farms
while in between the parcels of
land are colonial cottages or
grand homesteads that are a nod
to the town’s rural heritage.
Five minutes north of
Masterton, vineyards, olive
groves and orchards dot the
landscape. It’s extremely scenic
and has been the inspiration
behindOpaki Cycle Tours.
The Carterton
Mountain Bike Park
is ten minutes out
of town and can be
enjoyed by riders
of any ability.

10km (return trip) GreytownWoodside Trail follows the
original branch line that connects
Greytown with the historic
Woodside Station. It is well sign
posted from the centre of town in
Cotter Street. It is a flat, limestone
path that weaves under an avenue
of oak trees and has beautiful
views of the Tararuas and
Gladstone hills. The Carterton
Mountain Biking Track is at the
end of Dalefield Road in
Carterton. This is a fantastic
mountain bike track suitable for
the whole family.

Workmanlike direction holds back Figures

Hidden Figures (PG)
Directed by Theodore Melfi
Starring Taraji P Henson, Octavia

★★★
Looking for an entertaining film
starring women of colour
dominating an intellectual field?
Then skip this review and
watch Hidden Figures right
bloody now. This is the real-life
tale of three African-American
women who didn’t get enough
credit for their contributions to
Nasa and the space race, making
it an immensely valuable story to
tell.
The cortex of the film sits with
Katherine (Taraji P Henson), a
mathematical prodigy who works
her way into Nasa’s largest
calculating mind hive made up of
a largely male, completely white
staff.
Jim Parsons plays a co-worker
who is more than miffed that she
could possibly be at his level
(she’s actually way better),
constantly stonewalling her
progress and hiding behind the
common excuse that it’s ‘‘just the
way things are’’.
Her boss, played by Kevin

surface, but his inability to
recognise her struggle doesn’t

make him a holy white saviour.
When he gets the wake-up call, he
takes appropriate action, but only
after Katherine calls bulls... on
everyone in a hugely satisfying
scene that uses Henson’s emotive
skills to full capacity.
It gets deeper with Dorothy’s
(Octavia Spencer) storyline, a
should-be-supervisor forced to
butt heads with her boss Vivian
SUPPLIED
(Kirsten Dunst). Vivian is vicious,
and racist, but not necessarily a
vicious racist, allowing the film to
expose degrees of racial
intolerance that reside in
everyday people.
It’s a shame the commanding

heavily side-lined in comparison,
resurfacing for a decent but
laboured court case.

I thought it might be fun to do a wee experiment to see if anyone hadn’t
at least heard of TradeMe. Well it was boring, because apart from a
non-speaking eight month old baby, everyone had heard of TradeMe.
At 3 pm Friday 2 February this is what was happening:

Realestate.co.nz is NZs number one online platform for selling
property. Just property - it’s specific. Sometime ago TradeMe bought
out a statistic saying TradeMe Property has 4 times the views that
Realestate.co.nz has. I doubt that this stat has changed. It’s the way
we use these sites that differentiates between the two.
Imagine this, people traipsing through a shopping mall. By far the
greatest number of people are doing just
that, “shopping” or browsing. Maybe if
a store frontage catches their eye they
might wander in and they might buy
something. The other kind of shopper
knows what they want/need and will
go to a specific store to make their
purchase. TradeMe = volume of buyers
vs. Realestate.co.nz = qualified buyers.
What does that mean for you? Choose
both. Want to know how best to use
these websites for your property?

QUESTION: I have heard of companion planting. What is it and
which vegetables and plants work very well together?
ANSWER: Companion planting allows the
gardener to maximise the use of sun, soil and
moisture to grow mixed crops in one area. In the
veggie garden this involves the use of plants
that are naturally compatible and those that
make demands on the environment at
different times.
Companion plants can assist main crop
plants in a number of ways. For example;
by opening up the soil, providing support
for growth and by helping keeping it
free. from pest attacks.

Need a leak?
Stay onboard!
A surprisingly common cause of
boaties unexpectedly ending up in
the water is men falling off boats
when trying to pee.
Not surprisingly, they have
almost always been drinking
alcohol.
If you do end up in the water
alcohol makes your body lose heat
faster and hypothermia more
likely.
It reduces your ability to hold
your breath, and suppress your
airway protection reflexes
making it easier for you to inhale
water.
No matter the activity, alcohol
affects balance, vision,
coordination and judgement.
In boating,factors like wind,
sun, noise, motion and vibration
can magnify the effects of alcohol
– you make mistakes faster but,
incorrectly, think you are fully in
control.
Safer boating and alcohol do
not mix.
Things can change quickly on
the water.
All on board need to stay alert
and aware for your own safety
and that of others.
A momentary lapse that might
pass unnoticed on shore can have
dangerous consequences out on
the water.
‘‘Operating a boat is at least as
complicated as driving a car, and
a boating accident can be just as
lethal as a road accident,’’
Maritime NZ Director, Keith
Manch says.
‘‘Many people who would
never drive drunk think it’s safe
to operate their boat after
drinking.

Get home in
an emergency
Following an emergency, one of
your first concerns will your
family and home. Are they all
safe? How would you get in touch
if technology fails?
If you can’t get home, where
would you all meet up or could
you stay with friends?
The start of a new school year
is a great time to review what
plans you have, and make sure
everyone in your family is
confident they would know what
to do in an emergency.
Talk to everyone about how
they will get home if usual
transport methods are
unavailable. It’s also important to
talk about where you would meet
if you weren’t able to get home, or
stay home safely.
Talk now with friends or
family you could stay with, and
make sure everyone is familiar
with how to get there and how to
contact them.
Have a contact outside the
area, such as family in another
city who everyone can call to say
they are safe.
The start of the school year is
the perfect time to familiarise
yourself with your schools
emergency plan.
It should tell you where the
school will evacuate to if needed,
and how they will contact
families, among other things.
If the school has used Wremo’s
easy planning tool, their plan can
be found on our website.
Share the schools plan –
whatever form it’s in - with the
whole family, you never know
who might be picking the kids up.

kids school as soon as you can,
and talk to your children about

what could happen in an
emergency.
It could just be that you’re held
up in traffic and they get home to
an empty house.
Would they know what to do?
Identify some places near to home
that they could go; a friend’s
house, the library, a local shop.
It might be that they go back to
school and find a teacher.

Relationship Property Advice
When considering the degree of protection required for personal assets when
you enter into, or are in a relationship, there are many legal issues to consider
and on which you need legal advice. Some of these include:
[1] What is a relationship?
An agreement recording “what is mine” and “what is yours” can be
included in a Section 21 Agreement commonly known as a Pre-nuptial
Agreement.
You need to consider whether you are actually in a relationship that would
give wise to the presumption of equal sharing or some other form of
entitlement if the relationship was to breakdown in the future or on death.
I can also advise on property aspects of separation relating to the
distribution of relationship property and the preparation of Relationship
Property Agreements following separation.
[2] What is separate property?
If your relationship was to break down during your lifetime or on your death,
would you want to keep certain property you already owned at the
commencement of the relationship or have acquired during the relationship
for yourselves as “your separate property” without being bound to share it?
At Kandahar Home and Court we get to know each elder
and their families so we can tailor our support, recognise
what’s important to you and help you maintain your
independence for longer.

Is property you receive by way of inheritance automatically separate property?
The identification of and treatment of this property in the context of your
relationship has had a direct bearing on whether it is separate property or
relationship property.
Also, you need to give consideration to whether assets owned in a Trust for
your benefit was your separate property? Property relationship issues
where Trusts are involved has become incredibly complex as there have
been many court cases in recent times where assets held in trust, have
been attacked.
I can also help you decide if the following matters require your attention:
[a] Transferring separate property into a family trust in which you are a Trustee
(together with other Trustees) and a beneficiary (including other
discretionary beneficiaries).
The timing of a transfer into a Trust is an important consideration to
minimise risks against property relationship claims. Assets should be
transferred to a Trust before a relationship commences.
[b] Entering into a “Contracting Out Agreement” under Section 21 of the
Property (Relationships) Act. This Agreement would specify what is
separate property in the event of a relationship breakdown or death.
The Agreement must follow certain format and independent legal advice for
both parties must be obtained before the Agreement is signed.
[c] To up-date or make a new Will.
If you wish to receive any advice on the above matter or buying and selling
property, Wills, Trusts, Enduring Powers of Attorney, subdivisions or any other
matter I offer a free initial appointment to discuss your particular
circumstances then I can be contacted on 0800 249 529
or e-mail [email protected]
[3] What is relationship property?
To what extent has any property you owned pre-relationship been
intermingled in the relationship? i.e. have you used income from such
property for daily living expenses as you incur as a couple?
What about assets acquired by you since the relationship began?
Do you have joint names on assets or do you operate joint bank accounts?
Everyday actions that you take for granted can have a direct consequence
on your property entitlements.

There are several issues to consider when looking to protect property
which you would wish to keep as your separate property on entering into a
relationship or if you are already in a relationship.
There are many criteria defined under the Property (Relationships) Act and
the Act covers marriage, de facto and civil union scenarios.
The duration of the relationship will be relevant as will having children or
assuming parental responsibility for children.

brigades, Federated Farmers vicepresident Anders Crofoot said.
Enacting legislation is still
going through Parliament but a
transition
project
is
well
underway for the formation of
Fire and Emergency New Zealand
(FENZ) from July 1 this year.
FENZ will be an amalgamation
of the New Zealand Fire Service,
the National Rural Fire Authority, 12 enlarged rural fire districts and 26 territorial authority
rural fire authorities.
Farmers had initially been
concerned the Fire Service would
be the dominant player in the new
partnership, to the detriment of
rural communities, Crofoot said.
‘‘But consultation has been
extensive and there has been considerable
and
constructive
changes to the proposal. A new
board and new senior management have shown a will to change
the culture of the organisation.
‘‘The consultation continues,
which gives me great confidence
it is not a New Zealand Fire Service takeover, nor will rural communities be dictated to by ‘corporate suits in Wellington’, as one
critic has put it.’’
The new set-up provides for

‘‘Their form is not yet clearly

cial role in shaping policy to suit
the region.
Their input will be ignored at
FENZ peril. If the volunteers are
not happy they will walk away,’’
Crofoot said.
The Government has approved

extra funding of $303 million over
four years from 2016/17, including
a large component to address
under-investment in rural fire
services.
Ongoing costs will be met by
an increased levy on domestic and
commercial insurance. Fighting
forest fires would be treated like
any other land or property fire,
with the cost borne by the service
rather than solely by the forest
owner.
This has drawn criticism but
Crofoot points out forest owners
will continue to pay for costs of
fighting fires through their
insurance. Some who want a
higher level of protection will also
continue to mount their own fire
fighting forces.

FARMING
Rain spells positive but wind irritates
PIERS FULLER
There is no doubt that working in
near constant wind can be irritating but it is the way it dries out
the soil that really gets up
farmers’ noses.
It has been a particular windy
season right across New Zealand
and coupled with dry weather
east coast farmers have had
enough of the blowing that just
won’t let up.
Wairarapa farmers have been
lucky in that the region has
experienced a few spells of rain
throughout the summer to keep
the crops chugging along, but the
wind can dry the ground very
quickly.
Federated Farmers Wairarapa
president Jamie Falloon said the
season had been notable for the
ferocity and consistency of the
wind.
‘‘The incessant wind has been
driving everyone crazy.’’
Out east, the wind has been 50
per cent stronger than it normally
would be in January. Wind speeds
averaged 44kph at Castlepoint for
the first month of 2017 compared
with a 30 kph long-term average.
Falloon farms at Bideford east
of Masterton and said the hill
country and coastal farmers have
bore the brunt of the wind.
‘‘It might be a gentle breeze in
Masterton and it’s a howling gale
in Bideford. It’s been bloody
unpleasant,’’ he said.
The cold and wet spring was
Eastern areas are getting very dry while the west has been rain soaked. Jamie Falloon (inset) says the wind is getting under farmers’ skins.
not what most Wairarapa farmers
wanted but a bit of warmth and
rain since had been a positive.
‘‘We’ve just been getting
enough rain and the right time to
keep the crops going well.
‘‘The hills are looking pretty
brown and the feed quality has
certainly gone well off.
‘‘It’s going to be a bit of challenge to get things back into shape
but it has sort of been a normal
summer for us.’’
Central Wairarapa recently
had a shot in the arm with spell of
rain last Thursday, but the hot
weather was expected to dry out
soil moisture levels in the following days.
Metservice meteorologist Tom
Adams said there had been a
predominating
westerlies
weather pattern across the
country this summer and we

hadn’t had the large blocking high
pressure systems that we often get
this time of year to calm the
winds.
Depending which side of the
country you are on Metservice
rainfall predictions vary considerably.
Ferry levy to hit farmers
A levy due to hit commercial
vehicles on the Interislander
ferry will cost farmers in the longrun and deter them from using
the services, Federated Farmers
president William Rolleston says.
KiwiRail announced a 15.5 per
cent earthquake levy charge in
December as a result of the Picton
to Christchurch road and rail link
being closed for repairs following
the Kaikoura earthquake in
November. The charge will be on
commercial vehicles travelling on
the Interislander ferry.
The introduction of the quake
levy was pushed back until the
middle of this month.
KiwiRail expects inter-island
freight volumes to drop by 50 per
cent as a result of the main transport links on State Highway 1 and
the Main North Line on the railway network being closed for the
next 18 months.
But Rolleston said the company was ‘‘cutting off their nose
to spite their face’’ with the levy.
‘‘I think that the increase in
costs is really gouging the prices

for these people who have no
alternative but to put product on
the ferry.’’
The levy would reduce options
for farmers who were looking to
move stock across from either
island for grazing or to
processing because it would not
be economically viable to keep
doing so, resulting in a reduced
demand for those services, he
said.
However, ‘‘some people will
have no choice and they’re the
people who are getting penalised’’.
An earthquake levy is being set for commercial vehicles travelling on the
Interislander ferry.

MOTORING
Commodore’s sports-themed send-off
Limited-edition V8 models will see the
Commodore out with a bang this year.
David Linklater reports
Holden has announced its last
hurrah for the Australian-built
rear-drive Commodore.
The company has developed
three limited-edition models
based around the 6.2-litre LS3 V8
engine: the SS-V Redline
Motorsport Edition ($85,290, a
near-$10k premium over the
standard car), the Calais V
Director ($85,290) and a Redline
ute-based model called Magnum
($74,290).
The limited-edition names are
designed to pay tribute to those
who have made considerable
contributions to Commodore
history.
The Motorsport Edition
celebrates the car’s 460
motorsport victories, Director is
the name of the last-ever (and
highly controversial) HDT
vehicle produced by Peter Brock
and Magnum revives a name last
used by HDT in 1983.
The models are mechanically
identical between New Zealand
and Australia, save the option of
a manual transmission across the
Tasman. But Kiwis are getting
specific build numbers intended
to celebrate a Kiwi Holden hero:
four-time Bathurst champion
Greg Murphy.
Murphy’s best-known racing
number is 51: there will be 151
Motorsport Edition models
available for NZ, 51 Directors and
51 Magnums.
Separate Australian
production numbers are 1200 for
the Motorsport Edition, 360 for
the Director and 240 for Magnum.
Buyers will have the
opportunity to select a specific
build number when they pay a
deposit, although a few vehicles
have been put aside to be
auctioned, with proceeds going to
a new road safety initiative to be
announced by Holden later this
year.
"We anticipate considerable
interest in #5 (the racing number
of the late Peter Brock), #88 (six
time Australian Supercar
champion, Jamie Whincup), and
our own Supercar champion, #97
of Shane Van Gisbergen," says
Kristian Aquilina, managing
director of Holden NZ.
"It goes without saying, the
number 51 will also prove
popular – although I think one of
the models might already have a
particular racing driver’s name
against it."
There’s no more power for the
new models. Instead, the focus
has been on handling and
braking.
Holden engineers have
employed 3.25kg lighter "floating
disc" front and rear cross-drilled
rotors, an engine and
transmission cooling package
and 20-inch split wheels and tyres

for all three limited edition
models.
The sedan models come with a
drive mode control system
including the first Holden-badged
Magnetic Ride Control system.
Using three settings (Tour, Sport
and Performance), drivers have
the option to switch between
different suspension tunes
depending on the scenario.
Already used by HSV, the
Magnetic Ride Control system
employs suspension position
sensors on each corner of the
vehicle to read road conditions

The Motorsport Edition also
uses a high-rate subframe bush.
Magnum has gained the same
FE3 rear suspension tune as the
SS-V Redline sedan.
"We’ve developed engine and
transmission cooling packages to
meet ’GM Level 3’ track
performance, says limited-edition
lead development engineer
Daniel Pinnuck.
"Commodore now joins the
likes of Corvette, Camaro and
Cadillac CTS as among the most
track-capable GM vehicles."
All models feature special
exterior trim and unique
badging/decals. The keys come in
a commemorative presentation
case and buyers will also receive
a car cover and 1:18 Biante model
of their purchase.
Those determined to treat
their cars as collector items can
even opt to have them delivered
with the factory-applied
protective plastic lining for the
interior still in place.
Production of the Australian
Commodore ends on October 20.

Your health
WITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY
How stress affects the digestive system
Q: Over the holidays I didn’t
experience any digestive
issues, yet, after a few weeks
back at work, it appears a lot of
digestive symptoms are back.
Is this just stress? Thanks,
Carlene.
A: Firstly, your digestive
symptoms could be a result of a
number of underlying health
issues, so I would certainly
encourage you to visit your GP to
discuss these concerns. Research
certainly suggests there are a
number of factors that can affect
our ability to digest and utilise the
nutrients from food including
stress hormones, caffeine and
medications.
Stress is particularly
important to consider when it
comes to digestive function, as too
many people spend their days in
Sympathetic Nervous System
(SNS) dominance – a constant
state of ‘‘fight or flight’’, with high
circulating levels of adrenalin.
This can have a devastating
effect on our ability to effectively

discomfort or lethargy after
eating. It has been reported that
15-20 per cent of New Zealand
women experience Irritable
Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms,
and food plays a major role in
this, but so does the relentless
production of adrenalin.
From your body’s perspective
if it thinks you’re preparing to
fight/take flight, it diverts blood
flow away from what it considers
non-vital processes and if your life
is in danger, digestion is one of
those. All resources go into saving
your life from the danger your
body perceives you are in, due to
the high levels of adrenalin.
I cannot emphasise enough the
importance of activating the rest,
digest and repair arm of the
nervous system – known as the
Parasympathetic Nervous System
(PNS) – using breath-focused
practice or mindfulness.
Extending the length of the
exhalation activates this arm of
the nervous system as you would
never breathe this way if your life
truly was in danger. It therefore
communicates to every cell in
your body that you are safe and as
a result your digestive processes
are prioritised not compromised.
Given there are no teeth
beyond our mouth, we need to be
really conscious of food inhaling –
for example, sitting down at your
desk and literally engulfing your
lunch, as you complete another
task. This double whammy of not
being mindful and eating too
quickly is unfortunately a very
common scenario in workplaces.
For one week really focus on
chewing your food, chew each
mouthful until the food has been
sufficiently broken down. This
may vary depending on the
individual but 20 times per
mouthful is a good start. You may
notice that you want to put

another forkful of food into your
mouth while you are still chewing
the first one. Resist this and wait
until you have swallowed your
well-chewed food before you put
the next mouthful in.
The old adage you are what
you eat isn’t quite correct; instead
you are what you eat, absorb and
assimilate. Simple gut-supporting
strategies such as chewing your
food properly, taking apple cider
vinegar in water before meals and
not drinking water with meals
may assist your digestive
symptoms.

from kaffir lime leaf then very
thinly slice.
Heat a drizzle of oil in a large
pot on medium-high heat and
cook onion for 3-4 minutes, until
soft. When 2 minutes’ cook time
remains, add garlic, ginger and
kaffir lime. While onion mixture
is cooking, pat chicken dry and
slice into 1cm-thick strips. Season
with salt.
Add chicken and curry paste to
pot and cook for 1–2 minutes. Add
coconut cream and stock, stir and
bring to a boil on high heat. As
curry comes to a boil, prepare
remaining curry ingredients. Peel
carrot, cut in half lengthways and
slice 0.5cm on an angle and slice
courgette 1cm.
When sauce comes to the boil,
add carrot, reduce heat to medium
and simmer for about 5 minutes,
until chicken is just cooked

time remains, add courgette.
Remove pot from heat, add fish
sauce, lemon juice and sugar and
stir to combine.
To serve, Spoon 3⁄4 cup steamed
basmati rice onto each plate and
top with chicken curry. Place a
small handful of mung beans on
top, garnish with coriander leaves
and sprinkle with chilli flakes (if
using).

In December 2016, Council viewed the results of an informal survey
of 229 people and adopted the Statement of Proposal and Draft Policy
on Easter Sunday Trading. Three quarters of those questioned were in
favour of Easter Sunday trading.
The Draft Policy is to allow trading on Easter Sunday where business
owners wish to open, and where they can staff their businesses with
employees who are happy to work on that day.
Easter weekend in South Wairarapa is a time of high visitor numbers
and trading on Easter Sunday may offer opportunities for local retailers
to benefit economically. At the same time Easter Sunday is a day of
significance and some members of our community will prefer
that the status quo is maintained.
Before making any final decisions, we’d like to have your input.
We welcome submissions from any interested person or organisation
on any aspect of the proposed policy. The Statement of Proposal and
Draft Policy is available on our website

The lead-up to
the big day
RACHEL GRUNWELL
It’s getting close now to Cigna
Round the Bays on February 19
and many runners may feel
nerves creeping in. That’s
normal.
This is a good thing. It means
you have a healthy respect for the
challenge and care about doing
well.
Here are some tips that may
help:
Have two goals in mind.
The first goal is a time you
would be elated with and dream of
achieving (and could reach if all
things fell into place i.e. perfect
weather, you get enough sleep the
night before, enough hydration,
you don’t feel stressed etc) and
another goal time you hope to
finish by.
Tell friends and family about
the latter goal to take the pressure
off having to perform on event
day.
Or you could consider telling
friends ‘‘my goal is to finish with
a smile on my face’’.
If friends or family offer to
support you at the event, then
take them up on this.
It can be a wonderful boost
having friendly faces cheer on
your success. When I ran my first
half-marathon, I had lots of
wonderful support which I was so
grateful for.
I also had a friend offer to run
alongside me and it was support I
will always treasure.
When my legs got tired that
day, he helped encourage me to
keep going strong (even though
my legs were screaming stop!).
Remember your breath reveals
your state. If your breath is quick
and shallow, you will not perform
at your best.
So, try to relax and not let
distractions, or negative
thoughts, get in the way.
Consider using a mantra for
event day.
I repeat a few words that
Rachel Grunwell running in preparation for Cigna Round the Bays.
‘‘If friends or family
offer to support you
at the event, then
take them up on
this. It can be a
wonderful boost.’’
empower me, while other people
count to six to help them focus.
Use what works for you.

Bowls champ
wins back to
back titles
ILLYA MCLELLAN
Bowling is in the blood for
Wairarapa Women’s open title
winner Leanne Sweeney with her
parents both having been keen on
the sport.
On a personal level, Sweeney
said it was really special because
doing it for her father who had
died recently was a great
motivator and a nice way to
remember him.
‘‘It can be a bit lonely out there
on the green sometimes, but I
think about my dad and how
proud he would be to see me doing
well.’’
Sweeney made it back-to-back
titles on Sunday and will now represent Wairarapa at the national
tournament in Dunedin starting
on March 9.
In the two-day tournament on
February 4 and 5 Sweeney won
her first three qualifying round
games for automatic qualification
to day two and then won her semifinal 21-4 before taking out the
final 21-15.
‘‘For a junior bowler to win the
tournament is great, I think
everyone got a bit of a shock when
I won it last year in only my second year of competitive bowling
so to do it two years in a row is
extra special.’’
‘‘I’m looking forward to the
nationals, I went last year but was
beaten in qualifying by a New

Zealand representative by one
point. It would be great to get past
qualifying this year because there
is some really stiff competition.’’
Richard Whitley, chairman of
Bowls Wairarapa said it’s good to
see Sweeney doing so well. Her
father David Petersen was greens
keeper at Masterton Bowling Club
for many years and her mother is
also heavily involved in the game
‘‘She is a very talented bowler
from a really keen bowling family. Bowls is a matter of persistence and practice and she is very
dedicated.’’
‘‘The junior bowlers have done
well this year. Another junior,
Dean Hands, is also going to
Dunedin so it’s good for the club.’’
Back to back Wairarapa open
women’s bowls champion Leanne
Sweeney.
