Recent Funerals at St. Mary of the Valley
In past couple weeks we have had three funerals at St. Mary of the Valley. I was pleased that in each case the family
chose to have a Mass of Chris an Burial with the body present followed by burial in a cemetery. While I am happy to
do a service with the cremains of a loved one, I s ll encourage having the body present at the funeral mass, then
burial of body (or cremains) at a cemetery. This Sunday we have the example of Lazarus whose body was placed in a
tomb. In two weeks we will hear about Jesus’ burial in a sepulcher.
Resurrec on of Lazarus & Reverence for Human Body
Raising Lazarus a er four days in the tomb was arguably Jesus' greatest miracle. One of the reasons he performed
it - beyond his own personal affec on for Lazarus and his sisters - was to teach us reverence for the human body,
especially in death. Unfortunately we live a culture which does not appreciate that reverence. One of the indica ons is the fact crema on has
become such a common prac ce, especially here in Western Washington. A funeral director told me that in a single decade crema on jumped
from one third to two thirds of all funerals. Rather than reflec ng on the implica ons of crema on, we Catholics seem to have simply followed
suit. For sure it costs less, but there are reasons which jus fy the extra expense of a full Chris an burial. Not an elaborate splashy show, but a
dignified funeral which doesn't need to break the bank. You can obtain a beau ful low cost casket at h p://mariancaskets.com/
The Problem with Crema on
The problem with crema on is not so much reducing the body quickly to dust (although that in itself some mes precludes having a Mass with the
body present). The real problem is what can happen to those mortal remains a erwards. I've heard of urns being put on a shelf adjacent the
television or being used in a party joke. Worse is sprinkling the ashes and bone chips. That might be appropriate in a pantheis c, nature worship
religion, but what place can it have in ours? For us the key values are care and respect for the human body, having a Mass of Chris an burial with
the body present and a marker so that rela ves and loved ones can have place to come as a focus for remembrance and prayer.

Me complació
Necesitamos
$7,519 para alcanzar nuestra meta.
Una vez más si recibió un reembolso
del IRS o puede aportar algo extra,
sería una gran manera de ayudar a
nuestra Arquidiócesis y a nuestra
parroquia.

Liturgy of the Word for Children
Generations of Faith
2016-2017
Children’s Liturgy is actually the Liturgy of the
Word for children. There is no preregistration
required. We cover the Gospel of the day at a level
the children can understand and enjoy. We enrich
this with discussion, prayers, songs and plays.
We also try to raise awareness of God’s love, the
humanity of Jesus, the Seasons of the Church, the
understanding of symbols in the Mass and the
context of the Bible. Our aim is to make the children’s experience of
church meaningful, whilst helping them to grow in the faith of the
Catholic Church and develop as full and active members of our
Parish Community. During the 9:30 am Mass and before the Liturgy
of the Word, Father Bloom invites children up to the sanctuary. The
children will receive a blessing from Father and then process to their
classroom. After Children’s Liturgy, the children will process to the
main vestibule and quietly return to their families. Note: At least two
students will be chosen to bring up the gifts. Thank you for your
continued prayers and support during this ministry; It is a blessing to
watch these little disciples grow in their faith while lifting up Jesus
and loving others.
Generations of Faith is St. Mary’s “all generation” religious
education. Please join us to share a free family meal followed by our
theme of the year, The Creed and Professing our Faith catechesis.

Read Sunday’s Gospel: John 11:1-45
First Sacraments Students
Gospel Summary
In this Gospel, John tells the story of Jesus raising Lazarus
from the dead. The story is significant because it is likely
that his action was his last miracle before Jesus began the
journey toward his own death. Jesus was called to Bethany
to save his friend, but instead waited several days to
return. This action confused Lazarus’ sisters, Mary and
Martha, because they knew that Jesus could have healed
their brother. Jesus used the incident to strengthen the
faith of Mary, Martha, and all who believed. He made sure
that Lazarus was raised from death so that the people
could witness God’s glory.
Please practice your prayers! You should know all three
prayers, the Our Father, Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Winter weather
is approaching so please follow the Monroe School District school
closure information. If school is cancelled due to weather, First
Sacraments class is cancelled.

Reflection for Families
The healing power of Jesus brings new life to all of us. Are
there some things in our lives that cause us to die to
others? Perhaps we are impatient, ungrateful, critical, or
quick to anger. Maybe we’re proud, boastful, or envious.
Jesus promises us new life if we trust in him and allow our
actions to follow his ways.
from 9 am until 12 pm each day! VBS
is open to children in Pre-K through
Elementary. Please fill out a
registration form located in the
vestibules or parish office.
Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family
If there are members of your extended family who have
died, share with one another what this passage might
mean for them. What hope does the reading give us for
ourselves and for our loved ones? How does new life that
we can see this spring help us know what Jesus promised?
As you did last week, bring some symbols of God’s promise
to your prayer table.
Volunteers for Vacation Bible School are needed!
Registration fees are waived if parents volunteer. Adult
volunteers interested in helping are invited to a meeting
Sunday, April 2 in the Conference Room following the
9:30 mass. If you are unable to attend the meeting but
are interested in volunteering, please contact Meri Price
at the Parish Office.
