Look inside for the many ways you can volunteer!
Why do we
have Winterfest?
Just ask your kids!
Winterfest is an all-school carnival held the last Friday in January (January 30th, 2009)
from 5:30 – 8:30. It is a wonderful night of games, prizes, food and friends. Winterfest is
a PTO sponsored “funraiser” (as well as a fundraiser) and a warm way to spend a cold
evening in January.
Did you know?
*Winterfest raises $10,000+ each year to support PTO sponsored programs that benefit
each and every student at Alice Smith. The PTO helps to sponsor many programs
including Art Adventure, Bravo, field trips, many school assemblies as well as the school
directory and 6th grade trip to Eagle Bluff.
*Winterfest is teachers and staff spending an evening of their own at school to be with
our kids. Look for them making cotton candy, serving pizza, selling tickets or running a
game in the gym. Be sure to thank them!
*Winterfest Carnival takes over 400 parent and staff volunteers the night of Carnival to
make it a fun-filled, community building success.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Say “YES” when your classroom caller calls you to sign up for a shift; OR
Visit the Volunteer Sign Up in the Front Entryway at School to sign up for a shift
at Winterfest. You may also view the Volunteer Sign Up on-line at
www.Hopkins.k12.mn.us (click on Alice Smith, follow the link to “Winterfest”) to see
what’s available; OR
Take a minute and call or e-mail Marianne Aydil, Volunteer Coordinator, 938-5103
or [email protected] to volunteer for your favorite event.
Each game or activity is divided into three shifts. Shifts run approximately one
hour, which leaves plenty of time for the whole family to enjoy a fun-filled evening.
We need YOU to make this event a success!
COAT CHECK
Did you know that you do not have to carry your coat while you’re
at Winterfest? There is a coat check provided in the Kids &
Company Room (Room 40). You may also leave any of those
delicious cakes or bags of munchies that you’ve won and pick them
up at the end of the evening.
In exchange for checking your coat or goodies, the PTO asks $1 per
family. Come see us in Room 40 and we’ll hang up your coat!

CAKE & MUNCHIE WALK
2 tickets
It wouldn’t be Winterfest without the very popular Cake & Munchie Walk. We need lots
of great tasting cakes, cupcakes and cookies for the Cake Walk. Suggestions for the
Munchie Walk include bags of chips, popcorn, pretzels, cookies and candy. Like the Cake
Walk, the Munchie Walk depends on donations from Alice Smith families.
If you can help, please complete the form at the back of this packet and return it in the
Carnival Response Envelope (enclosed) by Friday, January 23rd. Cakes and Munchies
should be brought to the table in the front entryway between 7:00 am – 4:00 pm on the
day of Winterfest.
STUFFED ANIMAL WALK
2 tickets
Bag a Bear or Tame a Tiger at the Stuffed Animal Walk. You can find all
these beasts in Room 31. We need to replenish our supply of stuffed animals
for the STUFFED ANIMAL WALK. Take a moment this weekend to gather up
new and gently used stuffed animals to donate for the STUFFED ANIMAL
WALK. The class that brings in the most stuffed animals will win a certificate
for 5 free tickets to use at the Winterfest Carnival! Bring your stuffed animals
to class the week of January 26th.
POP & WATER
There are lots of thirsty people at Winterfest. We need many donations of cases of pop
or water. If you can help, please complete the form at the back of this packet and return
it in the Carnival Response Envelope (enclosed) by Friday, January 23rd.
Please bring your donation to the table in the front entryway between
7:00 am – 4:00 pm on the day of Winterfest.
NOW THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT
RAGTIME PIANO!
Our favorite piano player returns. Be sure to listen to “Professor Piano,” Jim Shannon,
play Ragtime Piano. He also takes requests so be sure to ask him to play your favorites.
He will be in the CAFETERIA from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
DIXIELAND BAND!
Once again, we are lucky to have the Prairie Schooners Dixieland Band. The Prairie
Schooners are made up of teachers and former teachers from the Hopkins School
District – including our own Rob Estrine, Scott Stillman, and Alan Thompson.
The Prairie Schooners Dixieland Band will play in the FRONT HALL.

They will remain in this frozen prison until somebody pays to bail them out or after five
minutes. Watch out for the grumpy fisherman or you may be the one who is caught.

you a “Get out of Ice House Free” card. The Ice Fishing House will be located in the gym.
