Week 3
Lesson 13
Summary of Core Instruction
Shrimps
After school, Frits was waiting for Alec on the
blacktop. He had a basketball tucked under his arm.
“I think I know why you don’t want to play basketball,”
Frits said. “It’s because you’re too short, right?”
Step

“Well, right,” said Alec.
“I know how you feel because I’m a shrimp, too,”
said Frits. He bounced the ball to Alec. “It’s a pain
being short. We have to run twice as hard as the tall
kids. We always have to stand in the front row. People
think we’re younger than we really are, just because
we’re shrimps.”
Alec nodded and bounced the ball back to Frits.
“So, you could avoid basketball for the rest of your
life,” said Frits, “or you could—”
“Play basketball and be awful,” said Alec. “I can
never score. The basket is just too high for me.”

Structural Analysis
Teach prefixes mis- and dis-. Read aloud
Ms. Blossom’s tip at the top of page 40.
Ask children to read the first two example
words. (misbehave, misspell) and note the
pink letters. Have children tell how the prefix mis- changed the meaning of each base
word. (Since the prefix mis- means “wrong,”
misbehave means “behave wrong” and misspell means “spell wrong.”) Then ask children
54
UNIT 6: LESSON 13
to read the next two example words (dislike,
disappear) and note the orange letters. Have
children tell how the prefix dis- changed the
meaning of each base word. (Since the prefix
dis- means “not,” dislike means “not like” and
disappear means “not appear.”)
Introduce Activity 1. Read aloud the direction. Then point out the words written
above the writing lines. Tell children that in
this activity, they will write words with the
prefix dis- on the lines; the words above the
lines tell the meaning of the words they will
write. Read aloud the first sentence, saying
the word blank in place of the answer. Ask
what word with the prefix dis- added to it
means “do not like.” (like) Have children tell
what word they will write (dislike) and write
it on the lines. Have them read the sentence
to make sure it makes sense. Help children
complete the next item, if necessary.
Introduce Activity 2. Read aloud the direction. Explain that in this activity, children
will mark two correct answers for each item.
Read aloud the sentence in the first item
and call attention to the pink word. (misbehave) Have children read the three pink
answers and tell which ones mean the same
as misbehave. (disobey, behave badly) Tell children to fill in the circles next to the first two
answers, disobey and behave badly. Help them
work through another item, if necessary.
Send home Backpack Page 93 so children
can practice reading their Pattern Words
and spelling their Memory Words at home.

Preview story vocabulary: shrimp, younger,
avoid.
Build background. Help children recall
that Frits and Alec were going to meet after
school to talk about why Alec was worried
about basketball. Then have children turn
to page 76 and read the title, “Shrimps.”
Ask children to tell what a shrimp is. (a
small shellfish) Explain that shrimp is also
a slang word used to describe a short or
small person.
Set a purpose for reading. Have children
read the story to find out why it is called
“Shrimps.”
Determine important ideas
Why doesn’t Alec want to play basketball?
because he thinks he’s too short

Reteach
“Well, right,” said Alec.
“I know how you feel because I’m a shrimp, too,”
said Frits. He bounced the ball to Alec. “It’s a pain
being short. We have to run twice as hard as the tall
kids. We always have to stand in the front row. People
think we’re younger than we really are, just because
we’re shrimps.”
Review that a prefix is a word part at the
beginning of a base word that changes
the meaning of the word. Review that
the prefix mis- means “wrong” and the
prefix dis- means “not.”
Alec nodded and bounced the ball back to Frits.
“So, you could avoid basketball for the rest of your
life,” said Frits, “or you could—”
“Play basketball and be awful,” said Alec. “I can
never score. The basket is just too high for me.”
“It’s high for me, too,” said Frits. “But I know a

Understand characters
Why does Frits understand how Alec
feels? He’s short, too. Does Frits like being
short? Explain. No, he said it’s a pain.
Understand characters
Read the sentence where could is underlined. It ends with a dash, meaning that
it wasn’t finished. Why did Frits stop?
because Alec interrupted him What do you
think Frits would have said if he had been
able to finish the sentence? take lessons,
practice, learn tricks to help a short player,
and so on

make him an awful basketball player? He
can’t score because the basket is too high.
Understand characters
Does Frits agree with Alec? Explain. No.
Frits said he could teach Alec a secret shot
that works for short people.
Discuss the story.
Have you ever not played a game because
you thought you didn’t play well enough?
Explain. Responses will vary. Some children
will say yes and they may explain feeling
afraid that kids might make fun of them
because they couldn’t hit or catch a ball, run
fast, or score a basket. (Connect text to life)
Write the word misplace on the board
and model how to use the prefix to read
the word and figure out its meaning.
Say, for example: I see the prefix misin front of the word place. I know the
prefix mis- means “wrong.” So the word
misplace must mean “put in the wrong
place.” Similarly, write the word dishonest on the board and model how to use
the prefix to read the word and figure
out its meaning.
Write the following words on the board:
disconnected, discontinue, disappear
misuse, mislead, misunderstand
Have volunteers read each word aloud
and tell its meaning. Then have volunteers use each word in an oral sentence.
