Appendix D: Summer Reading Scoring Sheets
Elementary School Assignments
Students will choose two books to read. All assignments
are due by Friday, September 24, 2010.
Summer Reading for kindergarten students is recommended, but not required. No grades will be given to kindergarten students.
The total score for all three completed assignments (log,
activity, and writing assignment) will represent 5% of the
student’s first nine weeks’ grade.
Assignments:
I. All students will keep a Reader’s Log of time spent reading for both
books and have it signed by a parent. (See Appendix A for blank

events, characters, and setting) and present an oral interpretation.

Grades 3-5
Generate a diary for one of the book’s characters (minimum of six
entries with 10 sentences each). Keep in mind the types of people,
places, and events the character would think about.
Make a three-fold brochure about the book to encourage people to
buy and read it. Include the title, the author, and a plot summary.
Make a shoe box diorama. Include title, author, part of the setting,
and some of the characters in display.
Summarize in at least four paragraphs and illustrate the summary.
Write a letter from one character to another. Be sure to include all
of the parts of a friendly letter. Mention at least three specific places or
events in the letter.
Write a four paragraph book review which gives a brief book summary, then tell what you liked and disliked about the book. Be specific.
Use an empty cereal box as a display board for the book. Include
the title, author, a list of characters, a timeline of important events, a
summary, and illustrations.
III. Classroom Assignment – Upon returning to school, each student
will be responsible for presenting the above activity in class. Grades 1-2
students will be responsible for retelling one of the two books read.
Students in Grades 3-5 will be given a written assignment in which the
student will compare and contrast the two books read. (See Appendix B
for Comparison Chart.)
