Experiment A controlled procedure set up to prove a hypothesis (prediction) correct or incorrect Parts of an Experiment Hint: Think of an experiment like a recipe that you would use to bake a cake. The materials list would be like the ingredients list. Materials list Includes all of the items needed to conduct the experiment and to measure and record the results Parts of an Experiment Hint: The procedure is like the set of instructions in a recipe. They tell you the order of the steps you need to follow to put the ingredients together and bake the cake. Procedure The numbered sequence of steps a scientist would have to go through in order to duplicate your experiment. It is a procedure with controlled variables that keep the conditions “fair”. Plant Experiment Procedure 1. Fill all pots with an equal amount of soil. Materials List 12 bean seeds 6 three inch plastic pots with bottoms Potting soil Water One fluorescent light One LED light Ruler Pencil and paper Camera 2. Document experiment with camera 3. Plant two seeds in each pot. 4. Place 3 pots under the LED bulb for 10 hours / day. 5. Repeat step 4 with the Fluorescent bulb. 6. Water each pot the same amount every three days. 7. After 3 weeks measure each plant. 8. Record the results on paper. Procedure Materials List 1. Put one magnet in the freezer for one hour. 2. Place other magnet at room temperature for one hour. 3. Dump box of paper clips on table. 4. Take magnet from freezer. Lay one side of magnet in the pile of paper clips to pick up as many paper clips as possible. 5. Repeat with all sides of magnet 6. Remove paper clips from magnet and record the amount . 7. Repeat steps 3 – 6 with the room temperature magnet. 8. Repeat steps 1 – 7 two more times for each magnet. 2 two inch horseshoe magnets 1 box of small paperclips Freezer Pencil and paper camera Conduct your Experiment First read through to make sure you understand all your steps Gather the materials Make sure you have your camera, pencil, and paper to document and record your results Template for Results Table Title Manipulated Variable Responding variable; Unit of measure Mean Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 data data data * data data data * *Mean: add trials 1, 2, and 3 for each manipulated variable. Then divide the total by 3 (the number of trials) Record your results Make a table; include a title, manipulated variable, responding variable and the units of measure The manipulated variable is located in the first column Title Type of Light The responding variable is recorded in the horizontal rows under each trial Height of Bean Plants in Cm* Trial 1 Trial 2 Mean Trial 3 LED Bulb Fluorescent Bulb *The units of measurement must be in the metric system Pictures: http://www.clipartpanda.com/categories/scienceexperiment-for-kids If then because: http://helponscience.weebly.com/how-tocreate-a-hypothesis.html Science-fair.org Light bulb pictures: Staples.com; Amazon.com
