OCT/NOV. 2012 A warm RdP Welcome to Trainer, Leah Jaime! I am excited to announce that Leah Jaime will be joining Rancho Dos Palmas as our new western & horsemanship trainer. Leah’s bio is available by request and I encourage you to request it. I know you will be impressed. Annie & Chip Descanso, CA Rancho Dos Palmas cultivates a comfortable, friendly atmosphere where all breeds, disciplines and riders are welcome. I am especially pleased with Leah’s decision to come back to full time training for several reasons. First and foremost, for Leah, this is all about the horse and rider relationship, and in her words, “I’m successful when my students don’t need me anymore” ~ well, as an amateur enthusiast, I know I will always need occasional professional help, but I like her goal. I am also excited about Leah because her clients and their horses are her number one and only priority. Leah is capable of guiding you to success on the local/regional show circuit, but she has no personal competitive aspirations, which means, WE will be her focus, 100%. Leah has learned that you never stop learning and that horses never stop teaching us. She is open and excited to participate in any clinics we host, and will make it a priority to be our professional eyes at RdP clinics so that after the event, Leah can help us implement what we’ve learned and keep moving forward. Leah, as my friend Leslie Exter says, “can ride like an Indian”, meaning, she has ridden forever and ridden just about anything and everything. Her time as a trainer at Far West Farms exposed her to top level western pleasure and trail horses, to off the track rescues and everything in between. This has given Leah an unusual range of experience and openness to finding the best in every horse, no matter breed or focus. In the words of Martha Harrington, the Grand Dame of the San Diego equestrian community, “Leah is a heck of a hand…and an awfully nice young woman!” Martha followed up her endorsement with, “Just wanted to add that Leah is very good with colts. Sandy (Arledge) gave (Leah) the tough ones … and she did a good job with no complaints!” You can’t ask for a better endorsement than Martha’s! Lastly, I believe that Leah, as with Hilaire, matches the Ranch values of emphasis on the horse and rider relationship and providing tools to improve that relationship. Leah’s program provides an excellent complement to Hilaire’s and I’m confident that between the two we have depth and coverage. Leah’s rates are on page two. You will find them to be a good value. I’m particularly excited by a new “product” ~ an intensive five day assessment/tune-up training which includes assessment, one on one lessons and training rides, where you can observe and work together. This is an affordable alternative to the traditional monthly training commitment and also encourages you to apply what you’ve learned “on your own”, but with back up on-site and available. Leah will be starting full time on November 1. I know you will join Adrian, Hilaire and me in giving her a warm Rancho Dos Palmas welcome. Bienvenidos… Rancho Dos Palmas Welcomes… This, That and the Other Updates; Tips; and Head’s up! Demi & Zeus, Echo & Luna ; Leah & Ahra; Cyndi & Inyo; and Leah Jaime (new trainer) and her Arab, “the Boy”! Special “Shout Out” to: Arturo and Antonio, Ranch Hands Extraordinaire, for their work on the Upper Ranch Arena! RAIN WEATHER MANAGEMENT: Fall seems to have arrived at last, and with it the need for rain management. Prior to a predicted heavy rainfall, the lower arena will be groomed and LOCKED. We are able to get back into action much more quickly when the arena is prepared to sheet the water off, rather than if it accumulates in hoof prints. The upper arena, as always, is pretty much indestructible, and if you need a place to ride, head on up. DRY STALL VS. SHAVINGS: After much experience, we recommend you use a drystall type of product in your outside pipe corrals rather than shavings during the rainy season—your horse will be happier and so will you. A good trick is to add a few bales of rice hulls (very reasonably priced at Country Feed) along with the dry-stall. You’ll be the envy of all your neighbors in the event of an El Niño year!
