French claimed land all the way to New Orleans after LaSalle’s explorations (they named this area Louisiana) French had built several forts in the Ohio River Valley to protect their fur trade English claimed they owned land in the Ohio valley as part of the Virginia Colony BATTLE BEGINS -British sends planter/surveyor George Washington to tell the French they are trespassing and demand they leave -French refused to leave -Washington is told to go back with a militia and defeat the French -Washington goes back and finds Ft. Duquesne (Pittsburgh today) and loses the battle French and Indian War Causes Albany Plan of Union – plan to unite ALL 13 colonies under one colonial government Consequences 20 ALBANY PLAN After defeat, representatives from several colonies met to discuss threat of war. They met in Albany New York Benjamin Franklin presents a plan that says it would be easier to defend all 13 colonies if they united under one government Colonists and King turned down the Albany plan. GENERAL BRADDOCK’S MARCH At first colonists fought with little help from Britain After they lost at Ft. Duquesne the British send in General Edward Braddock He had problems Bright red uniforms – seen easily Marched in open fields so they could be attacked from forest Used poor roads so artillery couldn’t be moved quickly. Took too long Ambush Braddock killed with many other British soldiers Washington called retreat Fort lost for a second time WOUNDING OF GENERAL BRADDOCK FRENCH DEFEAT William Pitt Took control for British in 1757 Ft. Duquesne was captured and renamed Ft.
