FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR
-Also known as the Seven Year War
-Named because the British were
fighting French and Native Americans

ALBANY PLAN
After defeat, representatives from several
colonies met to discuss threat of war.
 They met in Albany New York
 Benjamin Franklin presents a plan that says it
would be easier to defend all 13 colonies if they
united under one government
 Colonists and King turned down the Albany plan.






At first colonists fought with little help from Britain
After they lost at Ft. Duquesne the British send in
General Edward Braddock
He had problems
 Bright red uniforms – seen easily
 Marched in open fields so they could be attacked
from forest
 Used poor roads so artillery couldn’t be moved
quickly. Took too long
Ambush
 Braddock killed with many other British soldiers
 Washington called retreat
 Fort lost for a second time

 Took control for British in 1757
 Ft. Duquesne was captured and renamed Ft.
Pitt
 Ran up enormous debt
 Forced French to Montreal & Quebec

 British surrounded the Fort
 They found a path and followed it by night
 Surprised French and won the battle

TREATY OF PARIS
1763 war ended – and a peace treaty
was signed
 France lost everything except
Newfoundland and few islands near
West Indies
 British gained Canada and land
east of Mississippi except New
Orleans
 New Orleans and land west of
Mississippi was given to Spain

REALIZATIONS
Colonists realized they could fight together –
gained confidence
 George Washington gained experience as a leader
 Colonies learned they must work together to
protect themselves
 Colonies felt more independent of England

