Hiking Kinsarvik and Lofthus

Hiking Kinsarvik and Lofthus
Read detailed descriptions of the different hikes at: www.visitullensvang.no
A) Easy trail from Kinsarvik to the first waterfall in Husedalen
Park: next to the town hall in Kinsarvik
Follow a dirt road on the north bank of the river, along the river to the first waterfall lin Husedalen
Time: Approximately 45 minutes one way
B) Demanding trail to the four waterfalls in Husedalen Valley.
Park: Follow the sign to “Husedalen” by the bridge in Kinsarvik, and drive to the bridge crossing the
Vivippo river at the start of Husedalen Valley.
Follow a little dirt road from the Vivippo bridge to the first waterfall. From where there are two
options to continue:
 I: From the first waterfall a T-marked trail continues up the valley to the other three
waterfalls. It is partly quite steep, and can be very slippery in wet weather
 II: Just before the first waterfall, there is a dirt road going off on the left hand (you cannot
miss it). This road goes up the valley to past the second waterfall. The view to the second fall
is good from the road. It is a steep road, but easier to walk than the T-marked trail (especially
when coming down). The dirt road ends before the third fall, so from there you have to
continue to the third and fourth waterfalls on the T-marked trail.
Time: Approximately 5-6 hours return to see all four waterfalls.
C) Intermediate trail from Røte to Heng. Some fjord view on the way up. Great view from the top.
Park: Drive from Kinsarvik to Røte, and park at Røte, at the end of the paved road.
Follow the dirt road from the parking area up as long as it is snow free. On the way up the fjord view
is OK in the lower parts, but the second half of the trail goes through a thick wood. Once you get to
the end of the dirt road at Heng, the fjord view is great.
Time: From Røte to Heng it takes approximately 1.5 hrs. one way.
NOTE: The black trail starting at Heng,(the “Queen’s Trail”), is NOT possible to hike until July because
of snow.
D) Demanding Trail to Nosi (passing the “monks’ steps”), with great fjord view to fjord and glacier.
Park: There are few places to park for this trail, we recommend parking by the supermarket in
Lofthus.
Start by following the green trail to Opedal Elementary School. From the school follow a paved road
up to the farms at Lofthus and Eidnes. The end of the paved road dirt roads continue up, follow the
signs to “Nosi” or “Dronningstien” (“Queen’s Trail”). The higher you go, the better the view.
After Hovden, both a dirt road and a path go up. The path is steeper, and cuts the dirt road several
places. When the dirt road ends, you continue on the path. The stone steps (called monk’s steps) are
part of the path.
Time: From supermarket to Nosi it takes from 2.5 to 4 hours to hike one way.
Note: The view from Hovden (half way up) is also great.
E) Fruit Trail, easy trail through the village, passing many fruit farms. Recommended during fruit
blossom in May.
Park: There are few places to park for this trail, we recommend parking by the supermarket in
Lofthus.
Walk the local roads (most all of them are paved) in the Lofthus area. From the supermarket in
Lofthus cross Road 13 and follow the road for bicycles and pedestrians in direction of the church. Or
start by walking towards Opedal Elementary School. There are information boards with map and
local information along the Fruit Trail.
Time: Approximately 3 hrs. for the whole trail.
F) River Valley, easy trail (a bit steep in the beginning) into a short valley with view to two
waterfalls
Park: this trail can be an extension of the Fruit Trail, then park by supermarket. Or follow a local road
from the church, and drive past Hardanger Hostel and School, and through a residential area to the
football field. Park by the football field.
Walk from there on a paved road to the bridge crossing the river. This is a round trip, so it does not
matter whether you start on the south or north side of the Opo river. Just follow the dirt road into
the valley. At the end of the valley there is a bridge crossing the river, and you see both waterfalls
from there.
Time: A round trip from the football field takes about one hour to walk.
