Adjectives
Instruct each student to think of a
noun and list adjectives to describe it on
a sheet of scrap paper. Next, on another
sheet of paper, have her write a sentence
that includes the noun and adjectives.
Challenge students to see who can come
up with the longest, most descriptive
sentence. To enhance the activity,
have students copy and illustrate their
sentences on sheets of paper. Mount the
completed drawings on a bulletin board
titled “Sentences With Spunk!”
The brown, smelly, hairy
dog ran down the street.

A Perfect Meal
Adjectives
Materials:
grocery store flyers
paper plates (one per child)
paper
scissors
glue
Try this newsworthy approach to adverbs.
Divide a sheet of chart paper into three columns.
Title the first column “How,” the second column
“When,” and the third column “Where.” Post the
chart and guide students to brainstorm a list of
corresponding adverbs for each column. Next,
announce a made-up news event likely to interest
students, such as a lion escaping from a zoo.
Have each student write an appropriate headline
on a sheet of paper. Then instruct him to write a
brief paragraph that includes adverbs that give
information such as how, when, and where the
event occurred. Encourage students to refer to the
brainstormed lists as needed. After each reporter
completes his writing, ask volunteers to read their
news bulletins aloud and have their classmates
identify the adverbs.

A student cuts from grocery
store flyers pictures of foods that he
would like to eat during a meal. He
glues the pictures to a paper plate.
Then he uses adjectives to write a
description of his meal.

1. Program each beaver with a different
adjective
adjective or adverb. Indicate on each tail
whether the word is an adjective or an adverb.
2. Fold each tail as shown.
3. Label one tube “adjective” and the other “adverb.” Add details to the tubes so they resemble logs.
4. Put a paper clip on each end of each log to prevent rolling. Display the beavers and the logs at a center.
Using the center:
1. A student reads the word on each beaver and decides whether it is an adjective or an adverb.
2. He places each beaver by its corresponding log.
3. After all of the beavers have been placed, he unfolds the tails to check his answers.
4. If time allows, he writes a sentence using each word.
