Commodore: Greg Albansoder [email protected] [email protected] 563-359-8405 We are looking for individuals who may be interested in learning more about what goes on, on the committee boats and “race management”. Boat #1 - The judges boat or the PRO (principle race officer) sets the course and starts the races. You can learn the sequence and the flags on this boat. Boat #2 - The “mark boat” that sets the marks as the PRO instructs. Boat #2 also helps with assistance, if sailors get into any trouble or aid in capsize recovery. We would like to offer a training class on July 4th at 1PM, but we could use some individuals on the boats before that just to see if they may be interested. Vice Commodore: Rick Kuebler [email protected] 563-355-2806 Harbormaster: Don Allebach [email protected] 563-355-8823 Treasurer: Wanda Esping [email protected] 309-786-0073 Secretary: Budge Gierke [email protected] 563-359-4522 Membership: Ann Marie Campagna [email protected] 563-340-2607 House Manager: Dinah Wagner [email protected] 309-798-2147 Sailing School Co-ordinators: Bob Hummel [email protected] 563-355-3531 Greg Albansoder [email protected] 563-359-8405 Webmaster: Gordy Johnson [email protected] 563-676-4440 Newsletter Editor: Loretta Yigas [email protected] 563-650-7947 We are also still looking for volunteers for the Social Committee at this time. Please let me know if you are able to volunteer. What ideas do you have about how we can make the LDSC a great social event promoting our love of sailing to the public. Are there any individuals who would like to get more involved with sailing school and possibly become future instructors? If so, please contact myself or Bob Hummel, 563-355-3531. Greg Albansoder, LDSC Commodore, 563-359-8405 Thanks from the Harbor Master Normally we're not too excited about having a fire truck at the sailing club. However thanks to Chuck Manis and some other helpers for arranging to get a fire truck with a ladder to reach the top of our flag pole and restring a broken flag halyard. Now we can fly all the flags we ever wanted. The committee boats have been serviced by Bill Sturgeon. They were taken out for a shakedown run and fueled up at Lindsay gas dock. The boats are ready for the sailing season as soon as the river is. There are still many small projects on the list for those of you wanting to fulfill you work hour obligation. Lots of little sprucing up jobs will make the club grounds more appealing to our neighbors. Call me if you are willing and able. Pictures from Memorial Day! Work Party News from the Harbor Master The 2014 Open The Club Work party was held on May 10th. 18 people signed in to work both inside and out. They worked hard and got a lot done. Wall racks were installed. The dock was installed with steps. Painting was begun on the club white trim. The asphalt lot was sprayed for grass and weeds. The storage garage was cleaned out. Shingles were repaired on the roof. Committee boats batteries and props were installed. Don Davis has continued to paint and wants to varnish the rafters over the picnic tables. Greg Albansoder arranged to get the fire department to help string the last flag pole halyard. Chuck Manis has slated to power wash the club house and Rick Kuebler is planning to get cap shingles and finish the roof over the next few weeks. Gordon Johnson is actively digging up the #5 crane hydrant to replace it. It just looks like work! There is still some work needed inside the clubhouse: a. Fix water leak in drinking fountain b. Paint fire place rust c. Fix light in judges locker d. Defrost small beer cooler Thanks, Contact Don Allebach, LDSC Harbormaster if you are able to volunteer to finish up some minor work at the clubhouse. Member’s Corner LDSC Commodore Greg Albansoder received an Eddy for River Activity by being instrumental in the development of the Credit Island Bridge which the QC Times describes as a major connection between West and East Davenport's parks and trails. April 26, 2014 Congratulations Commodore! Our sincere condolences to Dennis Miller on the recent passing of his wife, Pat. For those of you who haven't brushed elbows with Dennis (Dr. Miller), he usually sails every Sunday with Hugh. He sails recreationally on his Precision sloop; white & blue sails . Always launches off of crane #2 and sails upstream away from the race course. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies. Rhubarb / Blueberry Crumble - Sherry Staub Everyone raved about the Rhubarb / Blueberry Crumble brought by Sherry Staub. Here’s the recipe: The 2014 Yearbooks are now down at the Club, as well as the 2014 Membership cards. Due to the limited number of books printed – please take only 1 per member/family. I am sorry that Timothy and Linda Maxwell were inadvertently left out of the Associate Member section of the yearbook. However, their information is included in the 2013 Sailing School Student section. The Membership Handbooks (with rules, by-laws, racing rules, etc), will be printed and distributed as soon as some minor revisions are made. Lori Albansoder Ingredients: My version: 2/3 c sugar 2 TBS cornstarch 1/4 tsp salt 3 C blueberries 3 C rhubarb (organic sugar) 3 TBS almond flour Topping: 3/4 C biscuit/baking mix 1/3 C sugar 1/8 tsp salt 1/3 C unsalted butter, cubed ½ C old-fashioned oats ½ C sliced almonds 4 C rhubarb and 4 C. any combo of fruit Bob’s Red Mill whole grain/low carb baking mix same amt. old –fashioned oats + 1/4 C almond flour Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl, mix sugar, cornstarch and salt. Add blueberries and rhubarb; toss to coat. Transfer to a greased 8-in square baking dish. For topping, in a small bowl mix baking mix sugar and salt. Cut in butter until crumbly; stir in oats and almonds. Sprinkle over filling. Bake 40-45 min. or until fillling is bubbly and topping is golden brown. I used a 9 x 12 dish because I used more fruit and topping. These variations are not really essential....just my version. Enjoy! Sherry Staub Chuck’s Winning Chocolate Bacon Dessert Chuck was crowned winner of the recent dessert contest. Out of six entries, his chocolate covered bacon won first place! However, he admits ... “It may have been rigged ...” :-) Congratulations Chuck! Quad City Sailing School (QCSS) The Quad City Sailing School is preparing for another successful year of instruction. Our first session is scheduled for the week of July 7th, followed by the weeks of July 21st and August 4th. The school provides 20 hours of instruction. Over the years, the school has partnered with the Davenport Park and Recreation Department. They advertise our classes in their brochure 'Thrive', answer questions and take registration. The cost this year will be $185 for Iowa residents and $225 for nonresidents. Once again, the school will also be offering the 'Introduction to Sailing' program, Cost is $30 for an introduction to sailing on one of the school boats for 1 to 1-1/2 hours, depending on wind, weather and current. This program has been very popular in the past and provided great revenue for the QCSS. Pictures, News and Reports Welcome! Please send Loretta Yigas any pictures of events, sailing school, races, etc. I am also interested in any news, recipes or reports. As appropriate and approved by the Commodore, they will be included in upcoming newsletters so that we may all enjoy the memories of our fun days at LDSC! If you are interested in volunteering to help out with any of the school programs this summer, please contact Bob Hummel (563-343-6699) or Greg Albansoder (563-359-8405). We would be happy to put you to work and partner with us. Fair winds and sunny skies, If anyone takes pictures of the classes, please send to Loretta Yigas, [email protected] Greg Albansoder Director Test Your Knowledge of Racing Signal Flags! What does this flag mean? Check out the hints …………… There is a barge coming so we better……. Take a break, we're not ready yet. Better safe than sorry. Y'all come back here, now. Help our membership grow; bring a friend and introduce them to all the friendly folks at LDSC. Answers on the next page! No cheating! :-) Loretta Yigas [email protected] Housekeeper’s Housekeeping Thank you for keeping the club house and grounds neat and tidy. It’s everyone’s job!! All supplies should be ready for a full season. Please let Dinah know should something be getting low. The oven and the fireplace have been cleaned and the brass polished around the window. The club house has been reserved for July 19th. LDSC members are allowed to reserve the club house by contacting Dinah Wagner 309-798-2147. Answers to Racing Signal Flag Quiz! Position of the next mark has been moved. A barge may be coming or maybe a big wind shift causes the race committee to move the next mark to new position. Life jackets required. All competing skippers and crew must wear a life jacket until this flag is lowered or be disqualified. Postpone the race comes with 2 horn sounds. The race is postponed until this flag is lowered with 1 horn sound. The race sequence will resume one minute following the removal of this flag. General Recall with 2 horn sounds immediately after the start means too many boats are across the start line. Skippers come back and the race committee will restart the sequence. THANK YOU! Please be sure to thank Devin Farley of Lake Geneva (you will see him again as the PRO at the Polar Bear Regatta) for his very generous donation of a full set of much needed racing flags, signal flags and a new MC Class flag. Diane von Dresky and Greg Albansoder are pictured with the new flags! Weather and Sailing Conditions There are at least four criteria for determining sailing conditions: 1. 2. 3. 4. Current Wind Skipper skill Safety precautions If the current is low ( <1mph) you can take more risk with high winds (15-20mph) and get knocked down or low wind (2-4mph) and not make headway upstream. On the other hand, high current (>1.5mph) you would need more conservative wind range (6-8mph) to make headway, but not too much that would risk knockdown. Beside wind speed and current, the other two factors are the skippers skill/experience level and what are the safety precautions in place. Do we have 2 committee boats in the water and plenty of experienced operators? Everyone needs to set their own limits. Experienced LDSC members are always happy to talk to individuals about how to treat any specific weather situation. Feel free to join in on this discussion. Send Loretta Yigas your thoughts on how best to determine sailing conditions and I will publish them in the next newsletter. [email protected] Brett J.
