Name___________________________________________________Period___________ Unit 2: Book of Knowledge The Rise of Islam - Chapters 7, 8, 9, 10 For this unit, you will be learning about the Islamic religion—its origins, its rise and its impact on the Arabian region during the Middle Ages (500-1500 C.E.) You will be creating a Book of Knowledge to serve as your homework packet for this unit. Follow the steps outlined below and be sure to get teacher signatures for each step before moving on. _______ Geography Challenge - Read textbook pages 72-73 and neatly complete the workbook pages 40-41. Chapter 7 – The Geography of the Arabian Peninsula _______ Read “The Geography of the Arabian Peninsula” (75-81) and complete questions 1-2 on each of the work book pages 44-47. _______ Arabian Peninsula Map: Follow the directions given to label and color the Arabian Peninsula map. (This will be the first page after the table of contents in your Book of Knowledge) See assignment sheet. _______ Travel Journal of Arabian Peninsula: Imagine you are a traveler crossing the Arabian Peninsula to find out what each area of the peninsula is like. Write a journal where you describe what you encounter and the adaptations you notice as you ‘travel’ through each of the four zones (deserts, oases, coastal plains and mountains). In addition, your journal will need to include these words: environment, caravan, plateau, nomad, sedentary, barter, irrigate, terrace, and adaptations. On your map of the Arabian Peninsula, include a dotted line to indicate the route you traveled. Be sure to include this on your key. Chapter 8 – The Prophet Muhammad _______ Read “The Prophet Muhammad” (83-88) and complete workbook pages 50-53. Be sure to write each summary in your own words incorporating the words given in each section. Use the signs posted around the room to practice writing various phrases in Arabic. _______ Vocabulary: Complete Unit 2 Vocabulary _______ Life of Muhammad: Create your own illustrated book “Life of Muhammad” following the assignment directions. This can either be individual pages within your Book of Knowledge or you can create a smaller book and make a pocket to insert it into your book. _______ “The Spread of Islam after Muhammad” View and take notes during the slide show Chapter 9 – Teachings of Islam _______ Read “The Teachings of Islam” (93-103) and complete workbook pages 56-59. _______ The Islamic Star: Create the “Islamic Star” page of your Book of Knowledge using the information from your workbook Chapter 10 – Muslim Contributions _______ “Muslim Contributions” View and take notes during the slide show. _______ Rumi Poetry: Choose one of the poems by Rumi to read and beautifully transcribe into your Book of Knowledge. Extra credit: memorize and recite the poem. Choose at least one additional assignment for your “Book of Knowledge.” Remember to insert this page and include it in your table of contents. Ideas for additional pages: Read a current event article about the Middle East and/or Islam and complete the summary page. Write your own poem inspired by Rumi Tell the story of Muhammad’s life in poetry form. Choose one of the Muslim achievements and create an advertising flyer: write an advertisement for one of the Muslim contributions. Do further research on Ramadan and Eid-il-Fitr and write a guide for how to celebrate. Prepare a meal using traditional foods eaten during Ramadan. Take photos/create a page describing the experience. View one of the following films and make a movie poster advertising the film. “Children of Heaven”, “Wadija”, and “The White Balloon.”
