PALMYRA STATE BANK

FEATURED BUSINESS
PALMYRA STATE BANK
In business seventy-eight years, Palmyra State Bank is a full
service community bank that prides itself on offering professional
confidential customer service with cutting edge technology. The
oldest and main location, located at the corner of Main and Church
Streets in downtown Palmyra, was completed in 1980. If you look
today at the cornerstone of this building, you will find it dedicated
to the good people of Palmyra and vicinity. “As a cornerstone
for history…a building to serve the people” is inscribed on that
cornerstone. In addition to this main location, there are two other
locations serving Marion County. There is a branch in West
Quincy, and the Bank of Hannibal, a division of Palmyra State Bank,
is located on McMasters Avenue in Hannibal near the intersection
of Highway 61 and I-72. Their West Quincy Branch opened in 1971
and, of course, suffered the great flood of 1993 when the levy broke;
the facility was completely remodeled after the flood. The Palmyra
State Bank offers ATMs at all its bank locations, in County Market
locations in Palmyra, Hannibal and Quincy’s 48th & Broadway store
as well as at the Oakley Lindsey Center, the Quincy Senior & Family
Resource Center, the Q-Centre, and both Bank of Quincy locations.
Thirty-four individuals are employed at the Palmyra facility.
Rosie Childers and Laine Hudson are thirty-five year veterans,
Cammie Foster has been with the bank for thirty-two years, and
Angie Poppe for thirty-one.
Palmyra State Bank was formed in June of 1934 following
the tragic closing of two Palmyra banks during the Depression
years. The two primary individuals responsible for the day to day
operations and management as well as raising the $25,000 capital
for the bank were Albert L. Juette and Van B. Wilson. The first
customer was M. D. Thompson. The beginning of the bank held
controversy. People were still concerned about the security of their
money, and funds impounded in two bank closings were yet to be
distributed. It was during this time that members of the BootsDickson Post of the American Legion pledged their support to a
new bank and high on their list of priorities was “the right kind of
bank.” The poster printed by the Legion said “by the right kind of
bank, it must be understood that we mean a bank that is for the
interest of the people as a whole, the interest of the community, one
that will instill with the majority of people a pride in the fact that it
is their bank, of them and by them.” Thus, the Palmyra State Bank
was opened.

In 1959, Byron B. Webb of La Jolla, California purchased
controlling interest the bank. It remains in the family today, with his
grandson and two granddaughters sharing ownership. Mr. Webb’s
grandson, Byron B. Webb, III has recently relocated his family to the
area. The Webb Family business office has recently been relocated
from California to the Palmyra Bank Building as well.
The Palmyra State Bank is very active in the community. At
the Marion County Fair, the Bank is a sponsor of the Demolition
Derby, the Truck & Tractor Pull, the Pepsi Wagon, the Livestock
Auction, the Queen Competition, and food judging competitions. It
hosts a picnic for High School Seniors at Palmyra and Philadelphia
annually, welcomes 6th graders for Kids Banking for two weeks each
July, regularly donates to Relay For Life, the Food Pantry, the United
Way, and Adopt-A-Family. Once a month, employees participate
in Meals on Wheels delivery, and each year the bank has at least
one mentor at Palmyra Middle School. This past school year they
worked with Palmyra R-1 second graders in a program called Teach
Kids to Save and this summer they teamed with the district for
the Summer Stars’ Program. Palmyra State Bank is more than an
institution. It is an integral part of the community.

PALMYRA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
MONTHLY MEETING
TUESDAY, JULY 10, 2012
The Palmyra Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting at the VFW
Hall Tuesday, July 10. President Michele Hopson reminded members of two
Chamber Grand Opening Ribbon Cuttings: ShopKo on Thursday, July 12,
at 8:45 a.m. and the Old Stone Inn on Friday, July 20 at 2 p.m. The public is
also invited to both events. Wanda Brummett requested volunteers to help
with sign up for the Baby Contest being held Tuesday, July 31st at 5:30 p.m.
the Fair. Organization will begin for Taste of Palmyra to be held Monday,
October 22.
A warm welcome went out to new Chamber member Ron Nelson and his
business, Nelson Trenching.
Chamber Supports Library Tax with Donation
Jerry Trower, President of the Library Board, presented an informational
program on the Marion County Library District tax referendum and the
services provided by the Palmyra Bicentennial Library. With the wide
array of services provided on a limited budget, the library has had to
make cutbacks instead of expand as needed. At the Palmyra Chamber of
Commerce Board Meeting held June 27, the Board voted to support the tax
referendum and make a donation.
Reigning Marion County Fair Queen Emily Wood
Emily Wood, reigning Marion County Fair Queen and Miss Heartland,
also addressed the Chamber. Wood was also one of the top ten finalists in the
Miss Missouri pageant this year, a goal she had set for herself. She thanked
the Chamber for their support and for sponsoring her entry for the 2012
Missouri State Fair Queen pageant which will be held August 9th and 10th in
Sedalia. Her platform is to fight against cancer, the disease which took her
grandmother’s life. Wood’s recommendations to pageant contestants are to
“Be yourself, support your platform, and it’s OK to be afraid.”
VFW: Old Glory On Parade
VFW Boots-Dickson Post Members Gene Ash, Ken Brummett, and Don
Sutton shared information on a program called Old Glory On Parade. Soon
fifty flags will be displayed from the light posts and around the courthouse in
Palmyra, the first four of which will be hung at the four way stop within the
next month. The 3’x5’ flags will be displayed year round except at Christmas.
Plaques in the VFW Hall window will note memorials and the names of
donors at designated amounts. Flag education in the schools will also be
implemented, and a dedication is planned when all flags are in place. The
membership will be accepting donations for the flag fund, and an article for
the Spectator is in the works. Boots-Dickson is also planning to be open to
the public for tours two-three days a week.
