The Index was compiled with Word’s alphabetical sort, which is a very literal, computer sort. Strictly
alphabetical, so Mac--- comes before Mc--- and A, An or The would have counted in the sort and so they
have been omitted from the starts of lines.
“Essay” is a catchall term for any prose written by SWCC that’s not strictly a bio (aka “topic”).
Accents have been omitted from French names and words to facilitate sorting and for ease of converting
the file to a different format.
