Thomas Dermatology General and Pediatric Dermatology MOHS Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology Dry Skin Education Las Vegas has a dry climate and hard water. If you or your child has dry skin or related condition such as eczema, you should follow these recommendations: Decrease the length and frequency of bathing. While this would seem unusual and unappealing, it is actually the best and easiest way to begin re-moisturizing the skin. Short showers are less drying than baths. Water temperature should be comfortably warm, not scorching hot. Gentle moisturizing soaps or soap-free cleansers should be applied to “dirty” areas only, such as the armpits, groin and feet. Other areas, i.e.; arms and legs, should be rinsed with plain water. Shampoo hair quickly or turn off water while lathering. Try to avoid contact of shampoo and dry skin areas while rinsing. Gently pat dry with a soft towel. Don’t rub the skin. Immediately apply a moisturizer. Heavy, bland creams are best and we will recommend some brands of moisturizers and gentle cleansers. If the skin feels dry later, reapply the moisturizer. If the dryness doesn’t improve, skip bathing or showering until it does. The “dirty” areas may be gently cleansed as often as necessary without wetting the dry areas. Don’t “cheat” and wipe down the dry skin because it won’t improve as long as it is exposed to cleansers, soaps and/or water. Continue frequent moisturizing. If the dry skin is a localized or small area, apply a heavy moisturizer such as petroleum jelly to the area before showering or bathing. Petroleum jelly around the mouth prior to eating irritating, sticky or messy foods can really decrease dry skin problems in this area. Swimming and spas also dry the skin. Apply a heavy moisturizer, preferably with sunscreen during the day, before entering the water. This will help protect the skin from irritation by the water and chemicals. Home humidifiers and especially water softeners are also helpful but not absolutely necessary. Drinking extra water, taking various vitamins or oil supplements, or other dietary changes does not generally help with dry skin and related conditions. www.thomasderm.com 9097 West Post Road, Suite 100 Las Vegas, NV 89148 (702) 430-5333 Fax (702) 430-5335
