I’d like to talk today about your country’s history.
Andria:

And, um, I’d like you to tell me some of the most

Ok. Well I come from Canada.

Yeah.
Andria:
Um, Canada was settled by, uh, many people
from Europe. ______ ____________ the original
people that were there, natives, were there _______
____________ the Europeans showed up.

Neil:
Mmm hmm.
Andria:
Uh, the first uh, British person to land on the shores was
John Cabot. He landed there in around the fort... fifteenth
century.
Neil:
Mmm hmm.
Andria:
And then in the sixteenth century came Jacques Cartier,
and he was the first Frenchman to ___________
__________. And so he claimed the area of Quebec for
France, just like John Cabot had claimed the area near
the Atlantic coast for the British.
Neil:
So what you’re saying here that, that Canada was split
into different parts _____ __________ _________.
Andria:
Yeah, Canada’s very, very big so uh, there’s lots of land
for everybody to claim.
Neil:
Does that mean there were also different languages at
that time?
Andria:
Um, I’m, yes of course. Yeah. The French spoke French,
the English spoke English, the native spoke their own
language. Actually it’s __________ ____ __________.
There was a small uh, misunderstanding uh, when it
came to Canada and how it, how Canada got it’s name.
Neil:
Uh huh.
Andria:
Uh, Jacques Cartier was _______________ ____ some
of the native people and they said ‘Well come over to
Canada’, and so they were ____________ _________ uh,
the village, which is actually now Quebec City.
Neil:
Ahh.

Uh, but Jacques Cartier, he made a _________

were talking about the whole area. And so they
started calling the whole area Canada.
Neil:
Right, right, right.
