Dear Hopeville Families,
It’s hard to believe that Autumn is here! It has been a great start to our school year. I’ve been visiting classrooms and seeing
all the new learning happening across all grade levels.
Thank you to all the parents that attended Open House!! Some parents and students even visited our school book fair. I’m
happy to say that we raised a total of $751.93 in free books for our school.
Please review the newly adopted Board of Education visitor’s policy that is attached. All visitors must sign in at the main
office as we do already; however, if you plan to volunteer in your child’s classroom, please plan ahead with your child’s teacher at
least 24 hours in advance and expect to leave your license in the office until your departure. If you have any questions, please call.
I’d like to welcome back Mrs. Coughlin and Mr. Santoro who will both be returning as tutors servicing our Kindergarten and
First grade students.
National School Bus Safety Week is October 21-25 this year. This is a good time to highlight school bus safety. It is crucial that
students maintain an orderly atmosphere on buses. Safety is paramount. Distractions can cause the driver to divert attention from the
road. Students and parents need to know that riding on the bus is a privilege. The bus ride is an extension of school, and students are
expected to follow the directions of the bus driver just as they would follow the directions of the teachers in school.
School Bus Safety – PAWS We have a Positive attitude, Act respectfully, Work hard and Stay safe on the school bus.
•
Be polite to the bus driver
•
Talk softly with the person next to you.
•
Always wear your bus tag with pride.
•
Walk quietly from your classroom to your bus.
•
Remain seated at all times.
•
Follow bus duty / driver directions.
•
Follow the rules.
•
Wait for bus to stop before standing up.
•
Keep hands in bus at all times.
•
Keep hands, feet, objects to self at all times.
Enjoy these fall days!

Note from School Counselor
As children grow socially and emotionally, addressing their developmental needs at each stage is an integral part of their
educational experience. I will be delivering various classroom guidance lessons to all students at Hopeville throughout the school year
to promote positive decision making, character education and social skills. During the month of September, I visited all classrooms to
welcome our students back to school as well as introduce my role as school counselor.
In addition to classroom lessons, I also provide small group counseling. These groups address various social skills and meet
during the student’s lunch time. Parent permission is required for groups and for short term individual counseling. Please contact me
if you have any questions about the school counseling program by email, [email protected] or by phone (203) 5748173.
I look forward to working with you and your children!

GRADE 1
It’s hard to believe the month of September is over! Our new batch of first graders have been hard at work!! In reading, we have read
some wonderful stories- The Hat, Sam and the Bag, Ants, and Jack and Rick. Ask your child to tell you about these stories –what
happens in them, who the characters are, what part they liked the best…In spelling and phonics, we are concentrating on the short
vowels A and I (a as in cat, map, bag, and I as in pig, win, sit) We have been sounding out and reading and writing words that have
these sounds. We are also working very hard on sentence writing. We want our students to be able to write a correct sentence using
capital letters, ending marks, and proper word order. In math, basic addition has been our focus. We are spending a great deal of time
on solving addition problems and writing addition number sentences. The first grade teachers are proud of how hard our students are
working!! Please encourage your child to complete their homework each night and to always try their best. Thank you for your
support.
Student of the Month:
Mrs. Guerrera- Girelis Rivera & Kay’ron Graham
Mrs. Lambo- Jaidalynn Alicea & Ray’Quan Anderson
Mrs. Luchina- Amiri Copeland & Diamar Gonzalez
Mrs. Cruz- Yelsi Vega
GRADE 2
Summer is officially over and we are studying about the changes Fall/Autumn brings…in weather, animals, plants and in us!
In Reading, we are learning about the type of character traits that make a lasting friendship. Our math facts are being learned in many
formats…through number lines, manipulatives, Base-10 Blocks, word form and expanded form.
In the beginning of the year, our routines are all important. We use certain folders, take certain things home each night, return them in
the morning and the New Friday Folder goes home for the weekend and returns Monday. These routines help us with organization and
help your student start being responsible for their own things. The time saved by being organized helps us have more instructional
time.
As always, we welcome your participation in our various fundraisers, Scholastic Book Club, Box Tops for Education and our very
special and fun Spirit Days.
2-Callahan Ariana Goordhin y Dhanesh (Zackery) Newland
2 Cantito Mesías Daniels y Jasmin Ruiz
2 Bl. Brandes – Paola Ocasio y Oscar Serrano
2 Cerro Zoe Nolan y Josu
GRADE 3
Happy Fall from Third Grade! We are off to a great start this year. In math we are learning about multiplication. We are
connecting it to addition, and showing what it looks like in equal groups, models and arrays. We are practicing skip counting by 2’s,
5’s and 10’s. Parents please help your child by reviewing multiplication facts every day.
Our DRA (reading) testing is ongoing, but should be concluded by next week. It is vitally important your child reads for 15 –
20 minutes daily. Doing so will help increase your child’s fluency and comprehension. We have a 2 hour reading/ELA block every
afternoon. During this block students have been enjoying a variety of stories. We are determining which traits describe particular
characters, and how the characters demonstrate that trait throughout the story. We have also been focusing on story elements, and
using these to create a summary of each story. We will shortly be including non-fiction reading into our literacy unit as we explore
the lives of Hispanic Americans and their contributions to society.
